What you call a screech is called a vocal break. She does it on purpose and is one of her signature things. It's not a mistake.

*Hey Asia & BJ! You two are a dynamic duo, with the 🔥 chemistry - Asia with the vocal knowledge and BJ with the overall performance and aesthetics! But seriously though, you two nailed this reaction! This is probably the gutsiest live performance I've ever seen from a 20 year old. The difficulty level was sky high and she proved she was the real deal here. Trivia: This was the performance that got her the title, "Asia's Phoenix". The power/fullness of her belting range and the vocal effects (i.e. vocal squeaks) were insane. The pitch issues had to do with her low range - her lower range was still underdeveloped here, so she had some minor issues managing those really low notes in "Emotions" and it got her off balanced. I mean, it's "Emotions", the hardest pop song in history! I don't even care about the pitch issues with the whistle notes - the fact that she had the guts to do that on a big stage like that, with no auto tune and no dubbing, is 🔥🔥🔥.*

Morissette's squeaks are all intentional. Some of them sound better than others though. She mentioned in a recent stream that she uses them a lot less cause she cause she doesn't want that to be her "signature" but she still adds them cause fans like it. She is much more sparse in the usage of those these days.

Guys, I love your work and honest insights Love this reaction..but just points to consider here: 1. ITS LIVE 2. SHE IS SINGING HIGH AND DANCING, JUMPING ETC 3. NO AUTOTUNES 4.SHE IS COMMANDING THE STAGE EVEN THOUGH SHE IS ALONE UP THERE..AMAZING STAGE PRESENCE. 5. MORI IS A REAL PERFORMER AS SHE GETS TOTALLY ABSORBED IN EACH PERFORMANCE SHE DOES. Absolutely!! Everything you said is right! Agree 100% with you. It only increases the chances of her making any little mistake considering all those things! Even still, I strongly feel she nailed this performance! AND… so many mainstream artist out right now that couldn’t nail this like she did. There was some clipping/redlining of the mic going on during the last whistle section of Emotions. You can hear the crackling during the first two phrases and then it finally redlines in the third phrase. I agree with you guys that it takes guts to even attempt that song live. The whistle note is morisettes trade mark she is the master of the whistle remember Mariah was her idol and inspiration a lot of people can hit that.whistle but not like morisette she can do run in it the sad part for Mariah is that because of over use of her whistle note she can’t sing or do the whistle like she did in the 90s her vocal box is so dried up and damaged that she can’t hold her notes today but she was the queen but who better to take her reign then morisette who adores Mariah I’m sure Mariah would be proud how morisette covers all of her songs Mariah actually did a review on morisette covering her song and was empress morisette is also singing the back ground with vocals with 3rd Avenues singers

That "squeek" is actually her whistle register. She revealed that in an interview so it's completely intentional and is her signature. It's pretty nuts when you think about it. Most singers that intentionally add the "break" bring their vocals to the breaking point to do it. Morissette is just adding a whistle note. Nutty.

Great reactions from both of you. Other commenters have already explained Mori's vocal squeaks so there is no need fo me to repeat it. Her New EP "Signature" is pure FIRE No EXAGGERATION! It's currently charting in the US on New albums itunes at no 27! That is unheard of. It's No1 in the Phillipines and charting in 9 other countries. Uk Poland ,Canada, Malaysia Australia Germany to name a few. It's charting on Amazon in the US as well and World itunes charts. Her power is real. For an EP on a new Independent label , with minimal marketing to hit this hard is indicitive of Morissettes incredible reputation. It would help if Reactors who have been huge supporters of her like yourself bought it on itunes, Amazon, and stream it on Spotify/ Apple as well as encourage subscribers to do so as well! There may be times she may not have done it on purpose but 99% of the time she does it intentional. It’s her stylistic choice. But who knows if she has done it on accident. Maybe she is the best voice of this generation, it is inconceivable that she is a total stranger to the great masses, it is a similar case to So Hyang, but in this case So Hyang rejects huge record contracts, Mori wants to be independent, both are from the best of the last 20 years

No back-up Singers, No dancers, No band, No Orchestra, with that kind of a sound system in foreign country of an avid K-POP idol people! But she nailed it!
