This song was written originally for a musical called First Name in the the late 80’s. It is indeed a Christian song in which she speaks to God asking all these questions. This musical was revived recently since the writer of the lyrics Freddie Santos passed away. Gary Valenciano arranged this song originally back in the 80s and rearranged it so Morissette could sing it. This was a very powerful ethereal emotional performance. Pretty special and one of my favorites.

Hauntingly beautiful.

It was written by award-winning stage director Freddie Santos. According to him, he was at a bar lounge taking a break from a comedy act rehearsal. It was about 2pm when he felt he needed to write down words that have been running in his mind for a time. He felt about it as if God was telling him to make a song out of it, the problem, he wasn't a composer. Direk Freddie called Gary Valenciano out of nowhere and asked if he could consider writing music to the lyrics he just wrote. Gary invited him to their house, they went upstairs ( Gary studio in the attic) they went up 5pm and didn't come down until 5 am. Gary was glued to his keyboards the whole time putting melody to the lyrics. Gary the original singer of this song. And now a revival with Morissette. Gary shared that he had never arranged or rearranged one of his songs ever for anyone before doing this to Morissette.

I love how you opened up the possibility of her singing to a loved one. As almost everyone here pointed out, this was meant to be a religious song. Your perspective made me question myself: “Can I be all of these - healer, teacher, friend, forgiver, etc. - to the people I love?” Also, for me the intentional exclusion of the article “the” or “a” tells me she’s seeking for those relationships that the higher being (or person) can hopefully fulfill.

Pretty sure this actually is meant to be about Jesus, the Messiah. I think the "could you be" aspect of it is to portray how heart it can be to believe that God actually loves you, that Christ (Messiah) not only died for the world, but that He would have still done it if you were the only person in the world.

Nobody I know would want a friend to be their god. In fact she said that she’s heard others talk about Him being their friend, their brother, their father and she wants Him to do the same to her. She is specifically asking God to be her messiah personally. She’s heard others help them and she’s asking God to help her too. She wants Him to Be there to answer all her questions. The words are so powerful. This song felt like I was talking to Him and pleading Him, begging Him to focus on me. I think the word Messiah here is not describing as a noun but and adjective. Could you be brother to me, Father to me, she wants God to be Messiah to her.

actually in the context this song, the singer is addressing Jesus, thus eliminating the need for "the." this song was written as part of a Filipino Christian musical called First Name, which essentially speaks of the names of God in the Old and New Testaments- culminating in the Name above all Names, Jesus. Could You Be Messiah is sung by the musical's lead character, Amy, who is trying to navigate her way through the bible and looking for her own name in it.

This video is being directed by her fiancee', Dave Lamar. This is very much a Christian based song. It was written by Gary Valenciano as part of a production. Freddie Santos wrote the lyrics, which are very cleverly written. It was part of an ahead of it's time Gospel Musical. It was originally named "First Name". This was billed, when it was written back in the 80's I think, as the First Original Gospel Musical. It is the most intimate of relationships and it is not about anyone all human. You are partially correct in your assumption. Because we are all called to as believers in this specific Messiah, to forgive, to help. I see what you are saying but she is talking specifically to the Christian Messiah and especially about Jesus. You could take it that way if you didn't know who she is and what she believes. Knowing those things makes it specific. So , if you are not ready for this to be the way you live, then there is nothing wrong living your life according to these principals. I understand your thinking, it's just not a valid approach given the intention of the song. It is a better way to live your life even without Jesus being involved. However, to really live under this system your heart and soul must belong to Him. I didn't make the rules, but I do believe them. Well aside from the previous sections It was a very good song for her to sing and she did kill it. Thanks for your ideas and reaction.

Can he help me with life's miseries? Can he forgive me for my wrongdoings and secrets? She is having a direct conversation with the Almighty. She has heard about Christianity, so can Jesus or God lead her out of her life of confusion and pain. and show her which road to take. The Philippines is a heavily Roman Catholic Christian -based country. So much so that it is the only country in the world that I know of, that does not permit or have divorces.

As a Filipino Woman from a country of devout Christians you'd think you'd be able to put 2 + 2 together. Your formula mounts up to a 2+2=5 equation. 2. So she reminds you of Mulan and a Geisha. That's great.
