As a photographer and adventurer, Chris Burkard has ridden his bike from the coasts of Iceland to the mountains of South America. But of all the enviable landscapes he’s explored, his favorite ride is his daily commute.
“If I'm able to jump on my bike and commute, my whole day is better. And I mean, that's the gift that a bike brings.”
Ride along with Chris in and find out why he never tires of this morning ritual.

Realistically Chris should be riding with 2 helmets, considering he wakes up with one already on his head and then he proceeds to clipping a second helmet before riding 🤣🧡

He actually adds an additional helmet every morning. No one truly knows how many he's wearing.

Great video, really beautifully put together. However speaking as an editor, and maybe I'm being over critical here for which I apologise, but sometimes less is more. Loved you waking up in the helmet but I feel the clipping helmet strap shot slightly spoils the joke!

10 problems with this ad (from an ad strategists): 1. apparently only white people ride bikes. 2. it perpetuates the stereotype of "extreme adventure" and gnarly rides etc. But Strava's business is already saturated with conventional cyclists. This work needed to expand that definition to grow its market into more mainstream audiences. 3. it's hyperbolic. Why is the man sleeping in his bike helmet? because he lives and breaths cycling? come on. And riding a stationary bike at is desk? creatively speaking, it's unrelatable to the uninitiated. 4. it doesn't explain the product in any meaningful way. 5. it' doesn't attempt to solve a consumer problem 6. it lacks a meaningful CTA. 7. Narratively speaking, it's route one, first base thinking. it's the kind of script you'd get after a one-hour brainstorm with 'marketers' (not creatives) 8. it completely misses the aspect of community, a crucial tenet of cycling. 9. The consumer takeaway is all wrong: the commute in question will leave people thinking "this isn't an app for my type of cycling" 10. no website, no hashtags, no social component. It’s a fun commercial and it did its job nicely. This, from an actual user. I used to pick out things like you did - before I did a visual communications degree (and ruined the fun in just doing creative stuff lol). And I did tell a company once how much they sucked and they hired me in return for the summer… but really, how much does that work these days? I’m now a corporate shill and when I get an email from someone who’s not an actual customer asking if the company does xyz - it gets tagged as spam and binned. I have a thousand actual customers that I need to get to. How long have you been using Strava for, again?
@mswaghorn
@mswaghorn 2 года назад
@@theanimaster Heya! I'm glad you feel sufficiently moved by my point of view as to reply with such vigor, especially given the thousands of other customers you have to get to. And thank you for raising a particularly important discussion: "the job", which you felt this ad achieved so neatly. As you'll no doubt recall from your visual arts degree, the 'job' is an important principle of ad work. I'm curious: what would you say is the strategic 'job' for this work? One would hope the creators of this ad are pleased that you're happy with it, at least. But I wonder if their strategic sights were set a little further behind you? In any case, congrats on that enlightening summer internship. And since you asked, I've been on Strava since July 2014.

@@TwoWheelsPlus 1) of the 6 people shown in this ad, all of them are white. 2) a downhill bike course, bunnyhops, jumps, air, skids, more bunnyhops, down some stairs, then a sand dune (what?), then back on the woodland trail again before one final skid in the dirt. 8) this ad tells the story of literally one person and his unrealistic commute from a farm to an office, set to the opening lyrics of; "I am all alone, perpetually riding home..."
@mswaghorn
@mswaghorn 2 года назад
@@TwoWheelsPlus 1) in which case, efforts should have been made to reflect a more diverse casting for the 'commute' story to compensate for the Iceland story. 2) if the point of the creative (see comment above: 'the job') is to get people to explore their cities on bike, then how is Strava's platform helping to enable that in this ad? If what you're saying is true, then the creative should have shown Chris using Strava's route builder to "explore the city", or shown him discovering a new segment along his commute, just as examples. This way, Strava functionality is unlocking the consumer benefit. What we're discussing here is what I'm referring to in points 4 & 5 of my list. However, in its current form, nothing about this ad is especially unique to Strava except the logo at the end. But all this is besides the point: the 'commute' in question doesn't reflect the reality of most people's daily bicycle commutes (although your commute does sound exciting), hence my point about perpetuating the stereotype.

Pretty sure Strava has other ads featuring non-white people of differing levels of ability. I mean I'm not a racist so I don't really pay attention to these things.
