It was great to hear from you that you recognized the value of giving your son the freedom to follow his interests instead of being legalistic with the AO thing. I’ve been homeschooling for 21 years (ish). Oldest just got married, next one down has received her diploma, but education certainly doesn’t stop there. And I have 5 more to go. Through all these years I’ve gone the gamete with curricula and pedagogies. And pretty much finally accepted that we’re a literary family educating at home, relatively unschooling overall, with a nod to some of Charlotte Mason’s applicable principles (keeping in mind that she knew precisely zero about bearing, birthing, nursing and mothering 7 kids round the clock, keeping everyone fed, housekeeping, and being a wife). I’m currently very interested in learning more about the ways experienced mothers of large families are using AO. This video is right on the money. Very good for helping me see some of the practicals. Thank you!

P.S. Hearing what you had to say about your son reminds me a bit of what my experience with my first son has been. With mine, he truly would be stunted by being forced to do the reading load in AO. He thrives with a daily routine that’s heavy in OUTDOORS and DOING and light on indoors and academics. God didn’t design every man for sitting inside reading for hours a day. I would like to share with you and your viewers some of my son’s favorite books. He loves the Wingfeather Saga, The Ralph Moody books and Bud And Me. It’s noteworthy to see that the protagonists in these stories are very busy, adventurous boys, mostly outdoors and facing actual dangers.

I have three little boys and it's I'm just trying to wrap my head around this CM thing! I can't see my eldest coping with the amount expected of them... so I'm really glad to hear of others experience with home educating boys.

This is SO helpful! I took notes! LOL! Please keep sharing more about your homeschooling. I just had my 8th baby and trying to figure out how to make Charlotte Mason style learning work for us.

I love your videos and am going to watch many more of them. I'm interested if you do narration when you do readalouds in morning time?

This isn’t really specific to morning basket, but I’m wondering which books and resources you feel are the absolute essentials for homeschooling? Like, on a deserted island and you can only bring one back back full to educate your children for many years? I know this is a random question but I’m so curious what yours would be!

Joy, I hope you and your family are doing well!! How do you handle narration during morning time since you're reading AO books?
@joycherrick
@joycherrick 2 года назад
I will generally stop after something interesting happens in the book or after the stage is set and ask the kids to “tell me back what I read.” I usually call on one child at a time. Then I will read a bit more and call on another child. I only do this once or twice per selection. We usually read 1-2 books during morning time

How do you juggle the individual year’s readings?? Like do your two oldest read their own reading while you read to a younger? Then you have three students needing to narrate at the same time? I have a Y3, & 2 & I’m fretting about next year when I have a y4 (who still needs me to read some of her work) & who will be doing mostly oral narrations, a Y3 (who will be doing only one written narration per week), and a Y1. Any suggestions/advice??

Hi there! I like to combine my kids who are close in age as much as I can. I have a group going through the Years 1-3 rotation- truly a first grader can hear the stories from Year 3! For a fourth grader who isn't reading independently, I may suggest looking into year 3.5 on the AO site. It's for children who are still gaining strength with reading independently! Hope that helps and encourages you!

Joy, I hope you and your family are doing well! How do you do narration during more time? Also, do you follow AO as written or do you change it up for each of your students?

Hi Hope! This year my older two children (Y5 & Y6) did AO as written because I just needed to trust the process! I do narration in MT by calling on children after reading for a bit. I try to have younger ones go first and then ask the older children to add what they can.

This is a random question but I watched a video where you showed a whittling know that you get for you kids when they turn 6. I think it was you who showed us all what you use. Could you please direct me to that RU-vid video so that I can look it up and then maybe purchase one too ? . Thank you.

Thank you for explaining how you break it all down! I have a daughter who will do some Kindergarten work this year and will start 1st grade 2 weeks after she turns 6. Do you think doing AOY1 would be okay with a fresh 6yo? We read chapter books now, do storybooks of Shakespeare, and read poetry, so she is already immersed in lots of "the AO style" so I'm not concerned with her sitting and listening, or even with her potential for narration. I was just curious based on your experience if it would be okay with a newly 6yo.
@joycherrick

I will be doing the very same thing with my fresh 6yo. Keeping in mind that not all 6yo are created equal! I’ve dropped some Y1 books and replaced them if we weren’t into them but each kid has been different in that regard! But yes Y1 is great for 6yos:)
