Listening to this song reminds me of my Grandfather. Survivor of WW2 from Japanese take over invasion of Philippines. He was wood shop teacher. RIP Lolo....
For sure it's Hot August Night. One of my many favourites of Neil; such powerful words. Not only do I know every note, chord and word from this, probably the best ever of all time album; I think I even know all the scratches on my 'LP' that I bought back in the 70's. God didn't gift me with his talent, but he afforded me His grace when he allowed to me live in his lifetime. Bloody brilliant!
Probably the greatest singer/song writer of all time! When "Hot August Night" was recorded, I had a dream of running away from home and hitch-hiking to USA (from South Africa???!) to see him perform live (as a "tree person") ..... and I had the unbelievable privilege and honor to see him perform live in South Africa recently!!! (From a good seat in the Soccer City stadium... WOW!) Now I can die peacefully with no wishes to fulfil no gift to leave behind, but my four children and precious wife
The music makes my soul restless and want to wander to those places I'll never get to see as a mere mortal. Diamond is really something, even way back when, you just knew you were listening to a person with more than just earthly talent.
I'm listening to this today since Neil Diamond was one of my mom's favorite artists, as well as one of mine, and I miss her so much on this Mother's Day.
Beautiful music, meaningful lyrics, a classic that is one of many that Neil Diamond has. I feel gratitude to be able to enjoy his and many, many others' work in this venue. Thank you for posting!
The most beautiful song I have ever been blessed to hear. I have left a legacy for my family that will never be forgotten .they will carry it on. I have been blessed by a truly beautiful family, thank goodness for I am 60 and will willlll be gone soon enough thank you for my family I love them all
I don't own every album/CD that Neil recorded but I have no hesitation in saying that the passion and the sincerity that's can be so intensely felt could only come from the creative genius of the one and only Neil...
Every now and then I feel like playing Neil Diamond and I go to RU-vid where I could spend hours listening to his many classics. This is up there with his best. Fantastic backing music and poignant lyrics, as relevant now as when he wrote it
This man has made me feel good ever since I can remember... even his voice in the background when we were studying for our finals? Helped us concentrate...And this song? It's not just a song...it's an entire story, and a very touching story
GREAT PIECE OF POETRY AND MUSIC, YOU MUST BE SO PROUD OF THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT. Thank you for the wonderful song. Thanks to all that have participated in bringing this music to RU-vid.......
The strange thing about this song is that you seldom, if ever, hear it played on radio like many of his better known hits. Fantastic lyrics, so melodic and wonderful percussion. What more could you need for a great song, just one of many in his collection
Also, my dad was working so hard, and in his later life , he did state he missed out on us growing up. I hope he did not die with regrets.. Love you dad - always did and we understood. You were trying to support your family - starting to cry, gotta go

I wore out this song on the record! It is my favorite song of all time. So real and true and sad. Thank you Neil. I started listening to it at 17 years ago and at 56 I play it over and over on my phone all night. Just beautiful and the truth about life. Thank you for its beauty and music. Thank you much. I love it forever!
One of the most beautiful and sad songs I ever heard. As a side mote my bff's daughter dated his son Jessie. A photographer......but not to take away, the sense of this song. First time I heart it, made me cry.
your sweat and tears...for your children..love and missing you still dad..i will trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday of fishing with you...precious moments..
Neil Diamond was my star when I was young, I am glad that he is still alive and going strong. Dedicated to my boss Mr Peter Catterall of Middle Sabi by David Simango
A great song, albeit a slightly different version than the one from "Moods". "...and the legs were shaped with his hands. And the top made of oak and wood." - Beautiful! Bravo, Neil Diamond!
e61807, This song was written by Neil Diamond, I have read elsewhere that someone had suggested this man James C Ronning also wrote Lady Magdalene, I own everything Neil Diamond has ever recorded, and am aware of which songs he wrote and which he didn't, and this song (Morningside) and Lady Magdalene are Neil Diamond compositions, he is not one for plagiarism, his creativity is such he need not resort to such things as many have done.
In this beautiful well written song......his kids were TOO DAMN BUSY playing video games to care about their hardworking Dad & what he had for them.....Dothan, AL....Roll Tide !!
This song was written when children were too busy playing outside and riding their bikes and such, being kids, but as the kids grew older, they had to learn, live and love and this consumed their time and before they knew it, their dad was gone...If...If only we had...If only I had...Rest in peace dad 4/23/15
For personal reasons I see this song as a great statement of religious angst. No one wants the "gift He had". And "He" calls us His "children". B'ruch hu, b'ruch Shemo!
Reminds me of my early years , circa 1950s , we had a "Chapman / Taylor adzed table that the old man loved , it was probably his only asset of any pecuniary value . Anyway , we used to dine at this effigy of skill by a craftsman .. Sadly ,it was sold to finance an alcohol problem the old boy had ...
Does anybody know what the history of the table and chairs in this video? As my wife and I own it. We asked Neil, but no response, so I am gathering it wasn't the table that his father made. Does any body know?
e61807 I have also read that you suggest Mr Ronning also wrote Suzanne, as recorded by Leonard Cohen, on inspection, Suzanne was written solely by Leonard Cohen, I don't understand why someone would suggest these songs are not the work of the artist who composed them, or that Mr Ronning (whoever he is) would try and take credit for works which he obviously didn't create, either he is grossly deluded and lives in a Walter Mitty kind of existance, or you are doing Mr Diamond and Mr Cohen a huge disrespect.
