@@samholmessailing Potting compound is amazing stuff Sam - we used to use it to seal cables we had spliced before sending them subsea on ROVs, which would then go down as far as 3,000 metres - with the ambient pressure acting directly on the splice. Most of our electronics components were contained in pressure vessels, but where access needed (fibre optic terminations, electrical terminal blocks [up to 3kV!]) we used pressure-compensated oil-filled junction boxes... Anyway, as it must be very frustrating for you going through so many tiller pilots, I'd definitely try to inspect the U/S ones and pot the electronics in the areas prone to failure. (Of course it would be much better if this was done as standard during production...) As suggested by your Mom, adding some silica gel inside the "sealed" tiller pilot body is also a very good idea - I would also apply silicon grease (M111, for example) on any o-rings sealing the body upon reassembly. Only fully pot if you understand the characteristics of all of the board components. It's easy to create a local overheating condition, especially if special thermally conductive potting is not used. Just a heads up. Those systems should be made with a remote electronics option.

I've read these comments about potting the circuitry; I had a unit that fried and died but sold my boat soon after. I emigrated from the UK 18 years ago, haven't sailed since so not used a tiller pilot in a while. However they ARE definitely fragile re water ingress. I hadn't considered sealing the unit's internals, but it makes sense - seems a bit drastic to seal with a solid be it epoxy or silicone or whatever. It occurs to me that something along the lines of shrink-wrap clear plastic might be the way to go? I'm thinking aloud here so please bear with me.... maybe a thin plastic/rubber sheet or tube you can wrap the gubbins with and then heat shrink it with say a hair drier? This means that you should be able to cut it open in the future to de-solder/replace components and then apply a new film and seal it?

​@@tyrotrainer765 i do not know who make's those things but they should be sued for fraud and reckless endangerment, coating the pcb and solder connections should have been done at the factory and is standard industry practice for waterproofed electronics. I did not see any rubber seals when he did take it apart. i have seen DIY autopilots that where build better than these. And if there is no better product on the market some one should put pen to paper and design a better one. At the end of the day all it is is a gyroscope/compass and a piston.

My recollection is that the device always sounded like there was friction happening because you could hear the tone change when it decided to move ie it was jumpy and not nice and continuous. That could well be a function of the technology, and the feedback mechanism wasn't that responsive or accurate. Regardless, the thing should be utterly weatherproof, whilst allowing access for repairs or adjustment.

Wildling Sailing put out a episode yesterday showing a DIY auto-pilot of witch the prototype runs on the compass in your cellphone. I would be looking into someting like that if i was in Sam's shoe's

@@furiosa369shade TBH they are good enough when they work to keep you close enough to track for safety when you are running on engine power, but under sail no way, you need a wind vane, or as I did, hand steer. The issue really is that the unreliability seems to stem from water ingress, which should not happen.
