------------------------
Morris Day stopped by for his first-ever interview with VladTV, where he spoke about meeting Prince in high school and joining his band. From there, Prince and Morris formed a friendship and later recorded the first Morris Day and The Time album with just the two of them before forming "The Time." Morris went on to speak about Prince and Micahel Jackson's competitive relationship and how Prince went to Michael to squash their beef. Elsewhere in the interview, Morris spoke about filming Purple Rain and how Rick James hated Prince, which you can hear more about above.

I grew up jamming to his music . They had the late 70's - 1980's locked especially in the south . All you ever heard was Prince , Michael and The time with a splash of Roger Troutman , Gap band , Luther , Atlantic Starr , Midnight Starr , New Edition , Funkadelic and Stacey Lattisaw . Who ever heard the song " Magic man " ? The best time ever !!! 🎼😉

@phade2blaq
@phade2blaq 4 года назад
I don't think he's hurt but I do think he feels betrayed considering these guys have been friends since childhood and I am sure Morris thought when he put The Time together that Prince would let those guys write and produce for themselves which never happened. Prince was a talented guy no doubt but as a friend, he wasn't very good to Morris. Vanity told a story that the reason she broke up with him was because of his controlling nature and she didn't like it and told Prince that but he wouldn't change so he ran her off as well.
@lwmson
@lwmson 4 года назад
I'm sure he's still a bit angry about certain things, and, assuming he's telling the truth, Prince did shit on him on a few occasions. But the fact is that had it not been for Prince, Morris would have never become a star and achieved success in the music industry. Had it not been for Prince, he probably would have spent the rest of his life working in that Montgomery Ward store in Gaithersburg, MD.

Well... I saw Prince when he was on tour in Houston, Texas many years ago when his Soft and Wet single was a hit song. Rick James was the headliner and the concert to go to at that time. Prince was the opener with Bootsy's Rubber Band coming on second!! Imagine that today??? Prince, Bootsy, and Rick James on one show!!! Concerts were soooo good back then and were affordable. Prince was not received well at all at this show. Everyone was aghast at the attire that he and his band wore. Andre Cymone had on see through pants, Dez had on rock garb, and Prince was dressed like...Prince. No one knew what to think of them at that time. Only Soft & Wet was familiar to the crowd and the rest of his set people were booing loudly and chanting We Want Rick (Rick James) especially when he started singing Still Waiting. My friends and I loved Prince even at that early age. A superstar in the making...

Well Morris you are part of the Funk Music Legacy, The Time has been from the get go. Your path matters you are in the lineage and i''m so happy that you are well and things have worked out. Hell I thought all you guys were Prince acting and in the 80's you kinda had to be, but you and Andre are real brothas and I appreciate that. Prince was a musical genius and a true legend, but, as Morris attests here, he was a true asshole. If canceling a gig for Morris and his band at the last minute wasn't bad enough, not offering to reimburse Morris for the expenses was really shitty. As Morris pointed out, Prince had just made $17 million off Purple Rain, and Morris played an integral role in the movie becoming so immensely successful. (The truth of the matter is that from a theatrical standpoint, Morris was the man of that movie and stole the show.) He certainly had the finances to reimburse Morris. Had that been me, I would never spoken to that little bastard ever again.

From a theatrical standpoint Purple Rain was terrible, Joe. Ain’t nobody in that movie could act worth a damn, and Morris didn’t steal any type of show. We all love that movie for the same reason: the music.
@lwmson
@lwmson 4 года назад
@@thedaily30 I disagree. I don't know how old you are or how far back you can go, but when it was released back in '84, just about everyone loved Morris in this movie. He was very humorous and engaging. True, many of the others in this film weren't good actors, but Morris was entertaining.
@thedaily30
@thedaily30 4 года назад
@joe jones Fair enough; I don’t disagree with you there. I just don’t feel as if he was “the man of the movie” or as if he stole the show. I do remember the entire theatre laughing they asses off when Morris was doing Morris, but when most people think of Purple Rain, I don’t believe they think of Morris Day first. But I’m happy to agree to disagree on that. Peace King.
@lwmson
@lwmson 4 года назад
@@thedaily30 Mind you I said from a "theatrical standpoint" that Morris stole the show. But yes Prince and his musical performances was what made the movie overall. But Morris' comedic relief helped support the success of the film too.

Prince will forever be one of the greatest musicicans ever!! However, I have always thought Prince battled demons within himself. Because Prince didn’t do interviews, Morris was doing all of the David Letterman late night talk shows for Purple Rain PR. He was as famous as Prince as far as pop culture for that short time. Plus, he and Jerome stole the movie, IMO.

onesong2001 Not true. I’m a life long musician. But it was their natural sense of humor that counterbalances Prince’s more serious moments in the movie. Of course the entire movie was great. The live music scenes. Apollonia jumping into the lake. Prince finding his father’s music. Contrast it to Prince’s attempt at humor in Under the Cherry Moon and it becomes apparent how important comedic relief is in any movie, regardless of the great soundtrack.

Regarding the money thing, it seems that the money thing has been an ongoing feature of people working with Prince. He just really didn't pay people for their work! The Family had very similar complaints. I LOVE Prince, but this seems to have been his issue (one of several). Not reimbursing Morris for his expenses after suddenly canceling on him is just really (I hate to say it, but) fucked-up! The dude flew all the way out at PRINCE'S REQUEST??? Only to get stiffed??? I have tremendous respect and admiration for Morris Day. He apparently had to have a lot of temperament living under what I would deem a "shadow" under Prince because of Princess approach to the Music Business wanting to Control every aspect, up to and including Morris Day's career and the Direction that The Time would take. During the Controversy Tour I was working for CBS Records in Cincinnati Ohio (before they pulled out of Cincinnati). I worked in the Promotional Records Department. I had the Privilege of meeting Morris Day in a Private Suite at the Cincinnati Colosseum. I saw Morris Day and I could tell he was upset by his expression and mannerisms. I approached him and I said "Morris there's a dozen beautiful ladies in this suite who are dying be with you" Verbatim. He said "The only woman I want to be with is her on stage" and he points to Apollonia! It's True in the Movie Purple Rain about the Rivalry Prince and Morris had to gain Apollonia's love, no doubt that Prince seemed to have an Edge based on Apollonia's interview. However you have to admit, that Morris Day went after a talented, beautiful woman. Who in my opinion no man could resist and at least had to give it his best shot. Morris Day is an Artist in his own right. This is an excellent interview. Thank You. Also Morris Day preformed in Cincinnati Ohio on Fountain Square live in the middle of all the people and he did everyone's favorite songs, including my personal favorite Fishnet Stockings/Black Pantyhose. Everyone danced. What I've witnessed is that Music brings everybody together and brings out the best feelings of Love and good Vibrations in People! I still streamline Morris Day and the Time on RU-vid! I wish that I could get Morris Day to collaborate with Bootsy Collins and his son Ouiwey Collins (Son of a Bootsy) on some new music. They have a recording studio in Cincinnati Ohio and I know that the Music would be an instant success!

I was AT that Rick James concert in Hampton, VA. when he toured (both were HOT in their own right... I didn't think about one standing the other up...this is crazy to see the other side) I'm a little frustrated that this interview is geared towards Prince... this is about Morris Day, and I totally want to hear about his journey... I KNOW enough about Prince! Seems like EVERY question is geared towards PRINCE, and not about strictly MORRIS' journey. I was also AT the movies the night Purple Rain was released (this back story is awesome to understand, because I was a teenager then and had no idea of this stuff), so at 1 o'clock in the morning my big brother took me and my girlfriend to see the first showing of this new Prince movie. (seriously though... I wanted to see about MORRIS DAY & THE TIME... keep the Q&A about that (this is too much about HIM sprinkling in stuff about Morris Day and The Time... plz)... although I'm freaked to know that Jamie Starr was Prince, and I'm sad to see the rift that was there because as a teenager, I was flying high on ALL of the Paisley Park Universe from a musical appreciation that I BELIEVE that you guys were on TOP of the world just like the image you portrayed... I own all of those records... in mint condition!!!! and I AM a true 'ride or die' Jackson fan (I just appreciate ALL of you) Thank you Morris... and keepin it 100, TODAY was the first time I heard 'Jerk Out' (it's like 'Oak Tree' which I also bought to which was probably after my exit from the Paisley Park universe and onto Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Babyface, and The Deele deal... this was interesting!!!

Vlad spoke about the Michael & Prince incident at the infamous James Brown Concert when he came to the stage (by request of Michael Jackson) on the back of Hulk Hogan! That was not Hulk Hogan! It was Prince's bodyguard 6'8 over 400lbs of Charles "Big Chick" Huntsberry! He also had a cameo in the movie Purple Rain!

The whole Jehovah Witness thing was Larry Graham's doing. I remember in interviews Prince couldn't even describe what religion he was in and would pass the mic to Larry to describe it. That was the only time that I sensed that he wasn't in control and was following behind someone. It's weird that you would call up old friends and say we can't work together unless you join my religion.,That is def. coming form somewhere else, because he didn't do that later in his life. I bet Larry told him that he had to that with Morris.

IKR? But the fact is Prince was a GENIUS, and geniuses relentlessly pursue their vision at the expense of everything and everyone else. This is why they all, for the most part, come accross as jerks. Especially artistic geniuses. Almost all the artistic geniuses - from the music world to the fashion world - are jerks. That's just the way it is. There are exceptions of course - Louis Armstrong and Janis Joplin come to mind - but most of them are more like Myles Davis or Truman Capote than Sachmo.

I'm watching this after watching Apollonia, so what Morris saying about Prince, same sentiment I've heard from Apollonia, she accepted and love Prince they way he was, especially about the $$$. Life is so ironic , Prince was so tight with his money, never wanted to pay people he worked with, $300.000 for Apollonia and she almost died twice, broken pelvis from motorcycle on top of her, while Prince driving, 2nd Hypothermia from the the cold lake, she said, she heard them saying, we're losing her, Prince was crying saying don't die, while him and a lady hugging keeping Apollonia warm. While Prince made over $50M. Apollonia wrote 2 song wasn't including in the sound track either. Yet he died and everybody came out of the wood, claiming for Prince money, he wasn't able to bring his money with him.

…lotta people don’t really like to interview with this VLad dude.. Realistically, he does that whole “low-key dig” shit that a lot of rappers don’t get down with. You CAN interview someone and not do that kinda shit. It’s all in the delivery. Some people have it, and some don’t…like this guy. Morris has ALWAYS been a humble and “vibe” kinda dude….to me and what I saw of him through the years, at least.

@@Tarantulisimo because, leave it up to some folks, all they want is the sugarcoated versions of things and never the bad and the ugly, I guess. Smdh. This is not about digging into old wounds just for the sake of doing so. It's about putting things into context to understand better why certain things happened and how they happened and for getting a better understanding of who all these people are who we put up on pedestals. I guess some people would only love to hear about Kurtis Blow's version of Prince's "generosity" to paint him in the most benevolent light but would rather that Vlad not bring up how he treated Morris Day and his band, right? FOH!!

Sooo True, a living Legend in his own lane. A lot of young people don't know that P. Diddy " Piggybacked" off of Morris and Jerome. That's where Fonzworth Bently came in. P. started putting his " Royal Servant " on stage with him. Made Fonzworth famous. Morris was always talented. It was just a Perfect moment in time. Prince and Morris elevated each other. There is a difference between coat riding and no talent. In Morris case, They complimented each other. Living through these times it's obvious. Both Truly Talented. Putting Jerome in too. That's what made these bands so great. The comrodary amongst them. Remember everybody.
