This is a demonstration of Smoke in the arcade version of Mortal Kombat 2. Read on below for more information...
This video shows pretty much all the player can do with Smoke without locking the game.
In Mortal Kombat 2, trying to play as the bosses or hidden characters is EXTREMELY prone to freezing the game. There's only very few things a human player can do. It's next to useless.
For movements like walking and jumping forwards/backwards, you must have the direction held/pressed BEFORE the round starts. If you press these directions AFTER the round has started, it'll freeze the game. And when trying LP/HP/LK/HK moves, when you press the button it must be held down - if you release the button the game will freeze. It's very sensitive to locking. Surprisingly though, it seems that the Block button and the directions Up (jumping up) and Down (crouching) are flaw-free to an extent.
Smoke in MK2 is of course, a pallette-swap of mostly Reptile, with a few Sub-Zero and Scorpion specific animations. He has a much faster walking speed - in fact the fastest out of the other two hidden characters in MK2. He has 2 special moves - one which is Scorpion's Spear Throw, and the second is a unique super-fast rush & throw move. Only the CPU Smoke can do these of course.
Even though he should be like any other regular character, he is still very flawed when a human player controls him, and this is because of the direction and button flaws described earlier. Also, notice how there is no smoke emitting from him when a human player controls him, unlike the CPU Smoke.
I found that if you press Block + HP together, he performs some kind of 'empty spear' throw animation, but there is no spear. If you connect it with the opponent, he/she will slip around and make the 'slippery voices' (like when a character gets caught with Sub-Zero's Ice Puddle move). You can see this beginning at 01:04 in the video.
Even though Smoke has Reptile's stance and walking-forward animations, he has Sub-Zero's walking-back animation.
Near the end of the video I tried to mess up the game out as much as I can. It can produce some strange effects with the scrolling...
In all of the arcade versions of the 2D Mortal Kombat games, selecting and playing as the bosses and hidden characters through alternative methods is extremely flawed - one wrong move by the player will lock the whole game. This is of course due to the fact that the bosses/hidden characters in the game are not programmed for a human player to control.
