RIP Captain lou Albano , The greatest wrestler, promoter and Actor-"wiseguys with Joe Piscpo and Danny Devito(he should have been given an oscar for his preformance!. You will be missed
Almost 20 years later, what Wilson and Patterson said turned out to be true. Yet the work conditions of wrestlers have not gotten better as witness at the young deaths of tons of wrestlers.
Patterson's last match was at Slamboree '93, where he teamed with Brad Armstrong (Road Dogg's brother). They defeated Ivan Koloff and Baron Von Raschke.
At 1:28 David Shultz ,in his anger, accidently exposes the buisness. He says to T-Bolt Patterson the he was a star because "they gave you the top spot, they gave you a push" well, if wrestling was a real, legitmimate sport then there would be no such thing as a push.
There is no doubt in my mind that there was some racism in the old days of Georgia. I remember that Thunderbolt Patterson and Tony Atlas got lots of shots at The Anderson Brothers (Gene & Ole) for the NWA World Tag Team Titles, but never could defeat them. Now, years later, I know why.
@Lfdjake91 actually even if wrestling was real a push could consist of a specific wrestler's match coming on at a specific time vs another specific wrestler
To tail on what Albano discussed regarding Bobo Brazil, if anyone in the business ever had a reason to complain about racism, it was Bobo. Yet he endured it and earned a great deal of respect.
@T2DIDDY Yeah, but Booker T was the last black WWE world champ and that was ten years ago. Ron Killings won the belt in TNA about seven years ago, and no one else has even gotten close. Not saying there's some prejudice or racism going on, but something's not right.
@howardtheman Actually no he didn't Ted Arcidi was the world's strongest man in the 80s. This show was from 1988 I remember it like it was yesterday. Henry wasn't recognized as world's strongest man until 1996. In both cases Acidi's and Henry's claim to that title were legitimate and not merely gimmicks. I believe Henry's power lifting records still stand and he hasn't competed since 1996 in power lifting or world's strongest man competitions. It's a rare thing for someone to achieve.
I'd check out Bill Watts comments about those comments. It's easy for Atlas to say when he was pushed from the beginning of his career. He was treated very well; but that wasn't the experience that many black wrestlers faced.
Thunderbolt Patterson made a good name for himself, but he was before my time so I really don't know if his claims are legit. Whoever that goofball in the white hat is I have no idea. Oh, and while dropping Tony Atlas's name as a black performer who made it big is good, I can't believe he dropped the name of S.D. Jones. Everyone knew S.D.'s name, but as far as I can remember his biggest win was over the "Brooklyn Brawler," Steve Lombardi. LOL
it's basically northeast vs south on a set that was in jersey i think....the crowd is obviously filled with ww(w)f fans backing schultz, albano, coraluzzo and arcidi they're kayfabing the hell out of this vs the south t-bolt patterson and jim wilson... t-bolt worked around the horn and drew money but never worked NY for Vince and Wilson was a prelim who didn't wanna sleep with jim barnett, mah-boyy...kayfabe won that day but albano couldn't kayfabe forever, arcidi drew squat (i.e. bill kazmaier)
He sure was. I saw a house show in Hershey Pa where Ted was on the card. He took on S.D. Jones and he was so bad that about half way through the match S.D. just about gave up and they pretty much had to end the match early. LOL!
by Dane Youssef I know of Lou Aalbano. Not by his work in the ring, but by his straight acting. Appearing in the opening of the "Super Mario Bros." tv-show (as Mario) and a guest-spot on "Ghost Writer." Whatever happened to him anyway? Is he still kicking? It's funny, but Mort's shows are less about debates than screaming matches. People yelling at one another as loud as they can and the cheaper the insult, the more the the half-wit (at best) crowd roars approval. by Dane Youssef
@Lfdjake91 Not necessarily. That could just mean (to those that aren't smart to the business) that they gave him the opportunity to wrestle against top guys - an opportunity to prove if he could compete at their level. You could compare it to a quarterback who gets to play in the game ( A PUSH) and prove himself as opposed to a second or third string quarterback who rarely plays. Now does the fact that some quarterbacks are first string and others are on the bench mean football is fake?
It is NOT the END OF STORY!!! While I agree with you, that T-Bolt is bitter, there is a lot of truth in what that man has said, and what he is saying still. Ladd was pushed everywhere because he was ERNIE LADD! He played 9 or 10 years in the AFL, one of the largest men in professional sports, and he knew how to "play the game." Ernie was extremely shrewd and intelligent about just about anything. Do you know how many promoters called Watts crazy because he had JYD as his top star?
Arcidi left the WWF and went to WCCW to work for Fritz Von Erich briefly as a heel. After that he got out of the buisness. He now sells excersie equipment in New Hampshire.
I feel that the WWE should concentrate on the wrestling fans that appreciate wrestling and not storylines or gimmicks. We wrestling fan will spend the money on dvds and figures just as much the kids love Cena.
You have to go back to the late 60's and the 70's - the mid 80's when T-Bolt was in his prime. If you had've saw him wrestle back then you would know that he has a valid arguement. He drew money and he was pretty damn good and ring and his promos were entertaining and colorful for his day.
Shultz is protecting kayfabe. His claims of "never blading" (not in this segment but others) and the "realism" or wrestling are said during a time when the biz was protected. That is why Jim Wilson sits calmly (throughout all segments). Wilson knows what is going on and knows he can't win the argument. It is all Kayfabe.
@Clintbdee actually Booker won it as KING BOOKER about 3-4 yrs ago!!he was the last black WCW champ BUT thats because he was the last WCW champ period!!
This is more entertaining then the wrestling matches themselves. I'm on the edge of my seat just waiting for another crazy man to come running out from the crowd trying to get his thirty seconds of yelling time in!
Holy crap i remember nikita the big bald guy, right? And yeah just don't pay attention to him......... he knows he's wrong anyway, thats why he hasn't responded yet.
God how I miss the wrestling of those days. The Internet / information age ruined a lot of the mystique of the craft. A little too much drama and not enough wrestling these days . Also , the promos and "heat" are not as inflammatory in this day of Political correctness.
JYD, the most beloved man of color in the ring was the Hulk Hogan of Mid-South Wrestling. He was that good! S.D. Jones, Rocky Johnson, Tony Atlas who would have been Intercontinental Champion in the World Wrestling Federation until he failed a drug test, Bobo Brazil who was the biggest draw...all famous and well paid wrestlers!
atticusheights, thank you for the props. I definitely am not saying that racism does not exist in wrestling. Back then, it was everywhere in some way or shape. I am just saying that there were promoters that did give black wrestlers a chance to shine and quite a few of them did. Today, they do play off of stereotypes (Cryme Tyme, LAX, Etc) but fans are smart enough to know they are characters. No different from the movies or TV.
Not that he would give a shit but Dr d just made a new fan this dude is the man need more like him in wrestling today untapped unfiltered and anti sissy lol
Whats funny about this interview is the ONLY LEGEND of wrestling out of anybody on that stage is Thunderbolt Patterson. If you look at the legends websites, its Thunderbolt Patterson that travels and does appearances. He WAS a HUGE draw in the 60s and 70s, and its easy to google to see pictures. Acidi and Shultz have NEVER been called legend. Thunderbolt paid his dues.
I dont know why everyone is jumping down Thunderbolt Patterson's throat. I just got done watching a video on here of WCW Slamboree 93 with him in a Legends match and they seemed to have high praise for him. I don't know, maybe he was an asshole.
Thunderbolt was 165 years old, bad hips, bad knees, and just burned out by 1985. He really didn't even belong in a ring at that point. His wardrobe was passe, his interviews were terrible. Now when you compare that T-Bolt to the one I saw on tape from his prime... LAWD have MERCY! The guy could sell ice to eskimos, extemely gifted on the mic. In the ring,if you saw Dusty Rhodes, you know who he got his antics in the ring from. Rhodes has admitted it several times
I hate to say this, but Thunderbolt is just a bitter man. I'm sure that there were promoters who would have held him back, but there were others who didn't hold black wrestlers back. Bill Watts and Eddie Graham gave black men like Butch Reed, JYD, Ernie Ladd, Ron Simmons and Rocky Johnson the chance to shine and they did.
@MrSickofstupidity He did not suck. He made very good money for that time. Dusty Rhodes, Blackjack Mulligan, and Superstar Billy Graham will openly admit to ripping off a lot of Thunderbolt Patterson's style in cutting promos. They wouldn't have copied his style and done so well with it if Thunderbolt Patterson sucked. Thunderbolt was a star, especially in Georgia Championship Wrestling which was the first wrestling show to be broadcast nationwide on cable TV.
you are right, i do sound racist don't i? in fact, we all do at times but at the end of the day, if you do me right, that is all that matters. now, on to my opinion about all of this wrestling, ufc stuff, i say it to my son who is taking mma classes and yes, he says the same stuff defending and laughs about it. I encourage my son because its something that he wants to do but be honest, stand bck and just look at it taking away the 'sport' and see what you think.....
@16JAM77 At this point however ppl in the buisness were not yet willing to publically admit that wrestling was not legit though even though we all knew it was not.
