Exodus 4:24-26 (ESV)
24 At a lodging place on the way the Lord met him and sought to put him to death. 25 Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it and said, “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me!” 26 So he let him alone. It was then that she said, “A bridegroom of blood,” because of the circumcision.
The first male child was the child of covenant and was required of every Hebrew male to be circumcised on the eighth day.
On the way back to Egypt to deliver the children of Israel, the Lord was going to put Moses first born to death. Because Moses had not fulfilled the Abrahamic covenant of circumcision. We can only speculate as to why this was not fulfilled; was it because of Zipporah his wife refused to let him circumcise their son or could it be that Moses was not wholly following God while he was living on the backside of the desert. In a backslidden state if you will, remember God showed up in a burning bush to get Moses attention. Evidently Moses was not looking for God, but God knew exactly where he was hiding out.
Zipporah realized that God was going to kill their first born, because he was out of covenant with God. This would be a good place to interject as parents with our actions and/or inaction we many time speak life or death over our children. Many time we do not even realize what kind of effect our action and/or inaction has on our family. Their first born did not have a say in the matter, but because of the parent’s inaction death was knocking at the door.
Zipporah take a flint and cuts off the son’s foreskin, not sure if she slung it at Moses but it touched his feet, and the death angel let him live. I believe that there is significance to the bloody tissue touching Moses feet. When the guilt offering was offered, they were to take the blood and apply it to the right ear, right thumb and the big toe on the right foot. On the Passover they were required to put blood over the door posts so that the death angel would pass over. They were done for a cleansing from sin and protection from death.
