I never realized how tall flame moss would grow! Flame moss is one of my favorites. I really like phoenix moss and find it spreads all over my tank and attaches itself to wood on its own through my tank surprisingly

I have like a 3 gallon tank I was trying to figure out what to do with it. Now I know, I’ll do a little moss scape.

I've never had any luck with growing any mosses. My water is really hard so after watching your video I think now I know why
@Guppy_Girl

@@razinfishes1918 there may be some mosses that have adapted to grow in hard water. It would be an interesting experiment to see what species can.

@@Guppy_Girl yea I believe I've only tried java moss only. Never tried Christmas moss

@@razinfishes1918I've grown Christmas moss with 350ppm hardness. The key is that it gets enough light, it dies for me if it gets shaded by other plants

@@grant5293 well that probably part of the issue as my tanks are heavily planted

How do you keep the different kinds of mosses separated? I love the idea of a moss tank

How to cure my Christmas moss from hair algae and shoud i fertilize it or just some water from fish tank will be enough? Thanks for the great info

I battle hair algae in this tank, but it's very minimal. I noticed I start to get more if I feed too much or feed a messy fish food. I don't have a definitive cure for hair algae yet. When it gets really bad for me I manually remove as much as possible and do a 50% water change to remove the excess nutrients in the water. This method doesn't kill the hair algae, but will heavily reduce its growth rate which makes it more manageable. I fertilize my moss tank very minimally, but it is not required. Ive noticed some mosses like a little bit of fertilizer while others don't care. For christmas moss I haven't noticed any increase in growth while fertilizing. Fish tank water for christmas moss will be fine. If the fish tank is growing a lot of hair algae in the tank then that means there are too many nutrients in it. If thats the case then maybe try 25% tank water and 75% dechlorinated tap water with the christmas moss. My tap water with dechlorinator is fine for mosses but I do realize everyones tap water is different. As long as its dechlorinated it shouldn't kill the moss.

if i put my moss to new tank its always outgrown by hair algae, any tips ?

I have the same issue. Short answer, if you want to avoid using chemicals in the water you will have to wait until the tank has had a few water changes and is more mature. There are algaecides sold for aquariums (like liquid co2) and I've heard people also use hydrogen peroxide with success. I've never tried those methods though. My approach is to let the tank work itself out as I continue to do normal weekly water changes and manual removal of the hair algae. Long answer, It has to do with excess nutrients in the water column. I've heard someone mention it specifically has to do with excess phosphates, but I can't be certain since I haven't found a very accurate test kit yet for experimenting with this. When setting up a new tank the aquasoil will leach out a lot of nutrients at the very beginning, and similarly with new wood. Plus new plants can drop their leaves adding to the nutrient build up. As well as over feeding fish without having a clean up crew. The excess nutrient and rotting organic material in the water is what I've experienced can lead to a hair algae outbreak. All these things tend to happen in a new tank, but with time and water changes all these issues get fixed. I still have a lot to learn about hair algae causes, since it happens in new tanks and mature tanks as well. Tip: If the hair algae is really bad I would pull out as much hair algae as possible from the moss, and put the moss in a container with dechlorinated tap water with medium to low light. Then set it aside for maybe a month or two, to give more time for the tank to finish adjusting and stabilize. Most mosses are very hardy and should survive being in a container with water for a long time.
