The name of the industrial city of Moss is known to many travelers to Norway. Moss is where the Bastø Fosen ferry crossing to the other side of the Oslofjord to the city of Horten is located.
Usually, people leave the E6 at the Moss turnoff just to cross the fjord. And when driving through the city, they don’t linger for long only in the queue waiting for the ferry to arrive. And from the whole big and bright city they see a tiny piece of the beach and the canal from the windows of their cars.
From this familiar landscape, we will begin our walk around the city! City Beach Sjøbadet, is a place of rest for citizens and guests of the city.
The heads of smiling people appeared here in the water in 2021. Sculptor Bruce Naigles was seriously puzzled over the question “Why are sculptures in public places so rarely smiling or happy?” and presented the city with sculptures that convey positivity and cheerfulness! During the day, the heads submerge and emerge from the waters of the fjord depending on the tides, but their positivity remains unchanged! And looking at them you want to smile back!
There is also a sculpture of the Norwegian Lady here. The same sculpture was installed on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, on the beach in Virginia Beach, as a reminder of the tragic shipwreck of the Norwegian ship "Dictator" in 1891 off the coast of the United States. The ship was transporting timber from Florida to England, and out of 14 crew members, only 9 survived the shipwreck; the captain’s wife and son died.
Moss is generally called the city of sculptures. And there really are a lot of them here with different stories, and we will definitely return here in the summer and get to know other monuments better.
But now we will continue our walk and the next thing we will pay attention to is the ferry crossing. Its length is 10.5 kilometers. It is carried out by two-way ferries operated by Bastø Fosen, the journey along the fjord takes 30 minutes.
The crossing is the busiest car ferry line in Norway. By the way, the electric ferry "Bastø Electric" came into our lens, and in 2021, when it was put into operation, it was the world's largest all-electric ferry operating on a regular route.
Next, we move to the industrial area of Møllebyen. This is the old town center of Moss, where brick former factory buildings house a cinema, cafes, galleries, museums, and the town library.
As well as the waterfall of the city of Mossefossen, which is regulated by a hydroelectric power station and is considered the birthplace of the city of Moss. Around the waterfall, the entire industry began to be built. The energy of the waterfall was used for the first time to operate a mill. Water saws were also one of the first in Norway to appear here. And by 1632, 50 sawmills and mills were operating near the waterfall. Sawmills used energy during the day, and mills at night.
Next, we will briefly move to the island of Jeløya, which is part of the city of Moss. On its eastern shore is Aker Subsea AS. The business provides integrated solutions, products, and services to the global energy industry. Here you can see huge reels of cables for various tasks in the marine and oil industry.
And of course, next, we will show you a bright kaleidoscope of different corners of the city of Moss that we saw during our walk. From the central pedestrian street to the new area on the city's waterfront, which even has diving towers. These towers are very popular during the short Norwegian summer but are empty in the fall.
We will finish our walk near the central cathedral of the city of Moss. It was built in 1861 and can fit 500 parishioners inside! Nearby there is a children's playground and a church park with a gazebo and a life-size sculpture of a moose, cast in bronze and donated to the town of Moss for its bicentenary by sculptor Ørnulf Bast. The elk sculpture has always been and still is an important meeting place for townspeople.
In this video, we invite you to spend with us one autumn and very windy day in the city of Moss. We hope our video motivates you the next time you cross the Oslofjord by ferry, stop, park your car, and take a walk!
We also really hope that you enjoy the video! We tried our best! Feel free to ask your questions and write your wishes in the comments, we are always pleased to read them!;)
