The objective of bench rest shooting is to accomplish the smallest possible groups. I have two rifles on the table today that do just this - the Wichita Mini and the Varberger from Sweden. Both the Wichita and the Varberger are in 6PPC and accomplish accuracy that most people wouldn't believe is possible. Bench rest shooting is a fantastic shooting discipline if you enjoy accuracy. Watch me test out the Wichita Mini and the Varberger rifle and let me know your thoughts. As always, thanks for being here, watching, and supporting the channel in any way you can by following the links below.

I have a 6Br with a Batt Action, Custom built by DQ Gunworks, best group I ever shot was 2 inches at 600 yards. The world record is .333 of an inch at 600 yards, it was shot at MSSA just outside of Memphis.

I built a custom benchrest 6.5 x 55 with a Burris Eleminater scope. I also shoot just at 2 inches at 600 yards and just out to 700 with my custom loads. My goal was always to do that at 1000 yards...But my set up just won't do it. The rounds destabilizing past 700 and they spread out to about 10 inches at best. I'm building a 338 now for extended long range . Finding primers and components now is harder and harder so I don't shoot as much as I used to at all.

Hilarious -- "one hole" with a hand-held rifle rested on a wood bench and a foam bundle. That's better than I used to be able to shoot in N-East winter bush-league benchrest shoots with my bought-used remington single-shot 6ppc and the whole gamut of Hart front rest and sandbag at the rear. That's a really neat rifle, was fun to see and hear about, and I think a whole lot of us are very happy to hear you talk.

Jim Borden built my 1k yd BR rifle. It has a Jewell trigger set at 2oz. It’s chambered in .300 Borden Caribou (.300 Wby Imp) and is a dream rifle. It’s a right bolt, left port which works well for me. Of course it is a single shot. Jim made the dies with the same reamer he cut the chamber with. He made threaded dies and dies for my arbor press. I don’t shoot BR these days but I do like to shoot paper and prairie dogs at extreme ranges. BTW I have a Nightforce scope on top of the rifle. I sent the scope to Jim and he mounted it on the rifle. I visited his shop and it is a machinist’s dream. All CNC machines to make his actions and stocks. He’ll put the barrel of your choice on his actions. His rifles have won lots of BR competitions over the years. He also builds hunting rifles to BR standards. Works of art in my opinion. Great video as usual.

Those great old spring steel Weaver rings give away the age of the Leupold scope :-) When I was a young shooter in the early 1980's all we could get were Weaver aluminum bases and Weaver steel rings. Who remembers how the scope would cant when you tightened ring screws down? So you'd set the reticle at say 11:00 and then once tightened the reticle was at 12:00. And if you put the rings onto the bases with the takedown nut on the other side, you started the reticle at 1:00 and tightened down it would be at 12:00. As frustrating as that could be, no one ever had a scope slip once that 1" wide spring steel strip was tightened down. Thanks for showing that great old Wichita rifle. What's it worth today?

Always enjoy your presentations. I was never a match shooter but I did plenty of bench rest when improving hand loads in my sporting rifles and even pistols. A couple of sandbags and a good spotting scope helped out. Making sure the loads and the rifles were the best they could be took away any doubts in the field about what (or whom) was causing a miss.

Production of the Varberg moved to Kongsberg in Norway but eventually fizzled out, possibly a late consequence of the post Chernobyl hunting bans in Northern Europe. The Chernobyl disaster appears to have cast a very long shadow over European gun making and sales. That is why you will also see this action with the Kongsberg name on it.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I mentioned this a while back, in connection with the demise of Krico. Hundreds of gun shops reportedly closed in Northern Europe because of the resultant multi-year hunting bans. That would have put thousands of employees out of work and dampened the enthusiasm of hunters who combine hunting with target shooting. It would also have made it harder for husbands to justify expensive new toys.

I generally don't punch holes through paper to measure group size so I can't say definitively which guns of mine are the most accurate one(s). What I can say is that I used my Winchester 9422 to replicate a trick shot I saw on the History Channel show Top Shot. In the episode they were shooting at cotton swabs set at 25 feet away with a really fancy 10/22 target rifle and scope, and my stock rifle with bulk .22 ammo did that challenge repeatedly like it was nothing. The Varberger is in the Lakelander family isn't it? I got the Norwegian Kongsberg 393 variant, I got it used for about 475usd in todays economy a couple of years ago. It's in 9,3x62 caliber, but I'm thinking of getting a new barrel in 30-06. Very accurate rifle. I got some feeding issue with the rotary magazine in mine, I need to press down on the forward part of the bullets when they're in the magazine to lift the back of them so the bolt pick up the cartridge, or else the bolt will just slide over it. This could also mean that the magazine is mounted slightly off. If it's possible to rotate it a little I don't really know as I'm lazy. I also need to fix the three position safety as the bolt can be manipulated with the safety in locked-bolt position. Probably a quick cleaning of the locking pin would fix it.

Thanks for reminding us of the neat things of our youth. Nolan Jackson made those in the 1970s just after he founded Wichita Arms. As far as I know, he was the only source of parts and still owned Wichita Arms when he died last August. The 6mm PCC has 35-grain case capacity with a 1:14 twist rate limiting it to 70-grain bullets. It can't compete with fat twist 6mm guns with 50 to 60-gran case capacities shooting 6mm bullets weighing as much as 115-grains. It would still be a great gun for 300 yards and would win a lot of 500 & 600-yard matches if you do your part. Have David Tubb put a 6 XC or 6mm Creedmoor barrel on it and it might win anywhere that didn't require rapid-fire.

Certainly nothing wrong with using a Tasco scope. I have a few, and love them. Probably the best budget priced scopes on the market.

Benchrest rifles are as close to mechanically perfect as possible, and any reputable builder can make a rifle capable of placing all of its shots in one hole at 200 yards in still air. What makes a winner in benchrest matches is the shooters ability to read the wind. The 6mm PPC is still the king when it comes to accuracy at 100 and 200 yards.

Wise words of experience. I wish I could shoot off the bench all day - those rifles are king for accuracy and just so pleasant. The benchresters that are righting me are also such fine and kind people. Thanks for the note.

I sqw one of the auto ejecting, single shot, .22 rifles you showed us (winchester i think, model 55 mayne?) on gunbroker for sale about a month ago. I wished i had the money for it, cause i would have snatched it up in a second

Bench Rest shooters are at the technical edge of the rifle shooting sports. Rail Bench Rest guns are even more accurate and cost up to tens of thousands. F-Class and Bench Rest are probably the two closest rifle shooting sports, but there's even quite a bit of difference between the two. 6PPC, 6 Dasher, 6BRA, 6BR are all great cartridges for the bench rest sport.

It takes some work to get the bolt release to fit in the stock, but you don't really want to hear about that stuff. Yes, yes I do want to hear about that stuff! I love the outside format videos.

Well I just checked my Hornady loading guide (a must when I watch your videos🙂), and they sure speak highly of the round. I don’t know if I asked you this already or not, but have you done any videos on stocks, and how to switch them around or modify them? I fell in love with a 357 single shot rifle, with I believe a falling block style action. I can’t stop thinking about it….so it must be love. Hell, I don’t have a clue what I’d even do with it. But it’s a left handed stock, complete with check piece, so if I just used it as is, or ground down the check piece, it would be kind of narrow where my cheek would rest. Should I get a new stock, or can I use it as is? Like is there a curve like in some shotguns?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 2 года назад
Hi Jim - Probably no curve. I would use as is - I shoot left handed rifles all the time. The cheekpiece is on the wrong side (for us) and that's about it. Gotta love those gun loves. Hope you get the .357.

You are so wrong.....I would LOVE to hear about how you fitted that Remington 700 stock to the Varberger. It looks very well done and elegant on that action. If you ever want to make a video series about your gunsmithing adventures I'm sure there are others that would enjoy watching. Thanks for this great content and your genuine way of presenting material. Really enjoyable to watch.

Thank you 🙏 it's slow - mainly because I'm slow - but I'll make a video anyway - kind of interesting I suppose. You know the big gray patch on the bottom of the stock - that's there because I made a mistake. The action would have fit and there would have been no "punching through" - it was just so close I assumed not enough clearance....but there was. Oh well.

Please check the neck size of a loaded round in the bench rifle with a micrometer. The neck diameter of the chamber should be on the barrel. You need at least .001” clearance! 🙏

The 6mm PPC replaced the 222 as the preferred bench shooter. I believe it's the most popular today.

The 6ppc holds many records at 300 yards, keep shooting them you'll really start to see what they are about, I still plug along with a 6BR Norma round on the bench........ they are just fun to shoot !!

Thanks C Henry - So fun - I was just shooting my 6PPC in the snow today - makeshift targets....I still can't believe this cartridge....it makes a fool of us...or me anyway. I shot the stump of a birch tee at 200 yards...the bullets touched. Ha! I'm sure you're rifle can do the same but for someone like me who had no idea of such accuracy...I find it amazing. God Bless.

Varberger is also relatively unknown in the Nordic countries. the company went bankrupt in the mid-90s. then it had been manufactured in Finland under the name Lakelander but also in Norway under the name Kongsberg. The rifle was sold with a guarantee - three shots at a hundred meters would be covered by a quarter. Otherwise you got your money back. I own a .308. mostly to show younger that new does not always make you a better shooter or hunter.
