The Rickenbacker is a stone-cold classic bass guitar, but it has to be said, it does have somee super annoying features!
In this clip, we break down the top 5 most annoying things you may encounter on a Rick.
Is this enough to put you off? Or do you love it regardless? 🤔

A Rickenbacker was on my wish list. Recently bought one. Gorgeous, but came to me unplayable. Angry hornet buzz on the G string and the bridge pickup is so high I'm bouncing stings off it every note if I more than breath on it. Have not given up on it, but brand freaking new and completely unplayable? It's under the bed in its case with an "I'll get to it eventually" trip to the shop pending. VERY disappointing.

I built a bass with all Rick hardware and it definitely sounds all it's own. Every other bass I play I wish had Rick controls. So many sounds and all fun to use. And the neck pickup with full tone has such beautiful thickness but with a jangle. Never give mine up!. Maybe I need to make another and add the strength out for bi-amping

Chris Squire, Lemmy, and Geddy Lee (who played "Roundabout' with Yes when they were finally inductef into the Rock'N'Roll HOF and did not miss a single note) could all kill on a Rick. Lemmy's signature Ricky had a Badass bridge, but it's the only model that had them.

I've borrowed and played an old 4001 (70s) and was definitely underwhelmed by its sound. The width of the neck takes some getting used to as well - the lack of taper reminded me of an Alembic somehow 🤣 They LOOK great, but once it's around your neck it simply comes down to playability and sound.

I feel this video, my absolute favorite bass body shape is a Ric, but i had one custom made from an undisclosed Chinese company. They made me a neck-thru 5-string 24-fret lefty with Musicman style bridge and pickups so i can death metal properly :) only thing they forgot in my custom build was i requested a reverse headstock and reverse triangle inlays, but they forgot that part and did the typical headstock and triangles :( and i needed it for some shows with a buddy cuz as a guitarist, i didn't have a bass, so i had to accept it as is, but it's kinda grown on me as is. The 7-piece (maple/walnut i believe) neck-thru is natural finish all the way down, but the rest of the back of the body is black, and the front is a blue flame burst, matching headstock, matte finish, with cream binding on the body and neck, black hardware ;) and she growls pretty dang well for a knockoff, she's a looker! No Ric logos, just a blank trussrod cover, not trying to pass it off as legit, but i did find the coolest b&w sticker i put on the headstock of the grim reaper playing a standup bass with a bow, i thought as a death metal musician, for my bass, that was so fitting :) i have this thing where i put one death-related sticker (usually mostly grim reapers) tastefully placed on each of my guitars. When i found that sticker, i was so excited :P

Solution #1: Stop playing with a pick. Either way, plenty guys do it and don't complain. Solution #2: Stop thinking about it so much, groove, and try to look as pretty as the bass you're holding. Solution #3: Try any given active bass today if you wanna see too many knobs. Mine was setup pretty perfectly when I got it so I never had to touch the trusses, and have only ever made minor bridge adjustments. Just treat the bass like the babe it is and you shouldn't have to worry about nothing, have a different bass on standby if you're worried about reliability. Even the most well-played instruments suffer wear and tear. I've gigged mine at least every other weekend for 2 years and never had any issues. If you can get yours setup properly, it's totally worth it. They play like silk and sound like the popular chick the P-bass could never date.

Learned to play on my dad's Ric. The workmanship is unparalleled. He had the pickup cover removed. I loved planting my thumb in the divot over the pickup. The worst aspect is the amount of wood routed out around the neck pickup; despite being neckthrough the neck flexes forward slightly where it meets the body which is why most setup guides suggest to set the neck with practically no relief.

The sound and looks are worth it. There's a built in foam mute in the bridge. Not as versatile as just palm muting, but it's there and sounds good. The pickup cover is what i rest my hand on when using a pick, so i don't mind that. If all those things really annoy you, then get a P Bass lol. That's the closest you'll get to the sound.
