Kidder Williams Managing Director David Williams says cost-of-living pressures rather than supermarket price gouging is the reason many Australian food companies are struggling at the moment.
The former investment banker who has been behind many of Australia’s biggest food deals sat down with Sky News Australia Business Editor Ross Greenwood to discuss whether the food industry and farmers need an inquiry into supermarkets and their pricing practices.
“Most Australian food companies at the moment are struggling, but they are not struggling primarily because of the supermarkets,” Mr Williams said.
“They are struggling because of the cost of freight, they are struggling because of the cost of power, they are struggling because of access to labour, and the cost of labour and so forth.
“Depending on who you are it could be the cost of milk from the farmer."

The struggle is from man-made shortages that manipulate prices. It has very little to do with operation costs, it has more to do with a great deal of grains and beef being sold to China, making availability tight locally, which creates a supply and demand crisis, which causes food prices to inflate. China has about half the world's food surpluses in storage and they are buying more, strategically to create inflation, which they know will damage economies around the world. I'd bet a big mound of gold, this is all by design.

They import more because they need it and to maybe prepare for shortages that may occur for a number of reasons. I suspect that creating inflation has little to do with it tbh as they have more than enough to worry about with their own economy atm.

Didn't a recent consumer investigation, as well as 4 Corners, find the big supermarkets were price gouging?

4 Corners FFS, a left-wing media arm of the current Labor government helping gaslight consumers that current government policies are not the cause of ever-increasing food prices. Like why anyone would think that massively increasing energy costs would have an impact on food prices, don't be silly.

Exactly right its not the markets. It's the labour governments stupid taxes on fossil fuels. Desiel is expensive so it cost more to freight food and goods refrigeration and lighting cost well you can blame labour for that to by shutting down all the power stations 👍

Ah, Fashion. During the 60's "flower power" posters were everywhere, and untolds of young folks wore clothes with flowers patterns on them, that was the fashion. And then Sir Edmond Hillary made "Climb it" popular, and oodles of folks died in an attempt to climb it. Around the year 1818 both Captain Parry and William Scoresby, whilst searching for the elusif North West passage, noted that the Geographical maps of Greenland needed to be updated, and kept Sir Joseph Banks informed about the disappearing sea ice, Not many folks travelled that part of the world,so most folks paid fuck all attention to it. And today, some Panic merchants are blaming a can of aerosol or my smokie ol' chain saw for the disappearing sea ice. Mother nature is busy at work making huge changes, that Albo sleasie, and Jenny Pong could only wet dream about.

The two main supermarkets are the ones who are making life difficult for those who supply them as they the price well below what it cost to the suppliers to make the product. That and the Federal and State governments greed in selling off our energy resources and infrastructure to the highest bidder, thus creating a deliberate shortage of resources

And you point is exactly WHAT? Woolworths is actually quite a mediocre performer, and over the past decade or so their share price has been quite a poor performer. P.S. Accounting lesson 101 for you, no charge. Profit of itself means NOTHING. You need to look at the Return on Investment (ROI). If you earned $1 million profit from you company, sound impressive don't it. But what if you'd invested $1 Billion in 'things' to generate that $1 Million. Be a TERRIBLE return. Your welcome!
