As a person who lived in the city their whole life, going out into the country and seeing the night sky in its full glory. All the stars. The beauty... It was wonderful.

As they rode down the dark wooded path they came to a clearing. The two children stopped and looked to the sky, floating up and around them were thousands of fireflies. The boy dismounted his bicycle and the girl stood there in the field, astounded by the sight in front of them.. one of many nature's beautiful concerts, and they got the front row view.

**It was night and I was afraid** It was night and I was afraid. The world was silent and the winds were calm. Yet my heart could not be still. You see, I am a failure. I dread the future and the passage of time. With each tick, disaster comes closer. And in my mind's eye, I see a future where 'I' no longer exist, destroyed without a trace of what was. But then again, it was night. Failure and disaster can't touch me now. Held back in the distant tomorrow. I looked around groggily. In colourless night vision I saw my roommate asleep. I peered into the window, down to the street below. I noted that the lights were out. The outside world was illuminated with nothing but stars and the moon. A spark of wonder! What would the world look like without man made light? How brighter would the nightsky be? My heart raced with excitement. I had to know. Still, no matter how excited I was, the rational part of me questioned. 'Is this really responsible of me?' 'Shouldn't I use this time to work for my future?' I mulled over the problem as I got dressed. 'Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. Meeting people would be embarrasing' Carefully, I edged the door open. It had a record of being loud and squeeky. My roommate remained asleep. Good. I walked down the corridor feeling the cool air soothe my worries. As I stepped down the stairs, an answer comes to me. *To paraphrase Einstein, to do the same things and expect a different result is the definition of madness. Yeah, in life lies insanity and fear.* *Day in, day out, I tried to move my spirit to try. Yet, what little I could muster would always be snuffed out by fear. I needed something different. Anything different. Perhaps the sky would give me some new insight.* Satisfied, my doubts recede. I emerge from my thoughts. I was almost there. There's a football field nearby that would give me the widest view of the sky. It was just like the stories my father used to tell me. In a time when electricity was less common, a full moon can light the way. Still, my senses were alert as I walked. Both for sources of danger and possibility of people. Technically, I'm not sneaking out. I lived mostly on my own. But I'm still doing something weird. And it's embarassing. Thankfully, my worries were unfounded. I arrived without incident. Now for the main course. I sat down on the grass and looked up. It was brighter of course. But still the same ol' sky. Yet we never get bored of it. And without the glare and noise of street lights, I can truly appreciate it. The sky was always beautiful to me. It's more than just blueish black and bright white that makes it so. Something about it just felt alive and boundlessly rich. The longer you look, the more stars you see. And a sparse sky could eventually reveal a thousand gems hidden just beneath noise and clouds. Then, there's the void between. The black background to the pinpricks of light. If it were a painting or a picture, I would say it's a dark color and that would be the end of it. However, as I stare at it, I feel my vision 'sink'. I feel like my sight goes beyond the curtain of color and joins the convoy of radiation streaking and screaming across a limitless space. I suppose 'it's a big world' is what it all boils down to. A world that does not care for what I am or what I do. A world big enough that the chance of failure can't possibly fill all probability. A world big enough that somewhere in the infinite permutations of reality there's a place where I can just be. Foolish, unreliable, distracted me in a place where I'm needed and accepted. Yeah, there must be. I stay there for some time, lying down at one point. That is until, mosquitoes start to whine and ants take notice of the blocked roads. I took that as my cue to leave. I headed back with a clenched fist, willing the warmth in my chest to stay. A weapon for tomorrow. 'There must be' ................................ A little something I made. Sweat. It seemed I was asleep, that was the first thing I noticed. Sweat. And blood. And tears. I was soaked with blood, sweat, and tears. I was on a bike, and it was night. Then my memories flooded back. I was riding my bike to my Grandfather's funeral. Tears, that was the result. I had fallen off my bike half way through the journey. Blood and sweat, that was the result. I finally looked up and saw a swarm of fireflies. They laced the sky like decor on a Christmas tree. You could see the fire from the galaxy poured messily on the horizon. I heard a clunk. My brother had thrown aside his bike and was staring up the power of the bugs. Fireflies, like mosquitos, but beautiful. I couldn't decipher stars from the flies. "ALF!" I shout jumping over a rock that could've been the end of me. "what?" he said basically. "Just look" "Look at the souls racing to the Beyond," I said. My head was spinning. "You think one of them is Grandpa?" Alf, my brother asked simply. "Yes," I caught one midair, and it seemed to smile at me. A smiling firefly. "This one is," I said. "Well?" I let go of the fly they flew shakily to the stars. With the other souls, the other fireflies. I realized we will all climb up to the stars, so why not sit and watch for it will happen to us all. Why not? Why not sit and watch the *Fireflies*
