This video is about Day 3 of our South Korea travel series when we visited the town of sokcho for a 2d1n trip to visit the famous Seoraksan National Park and other Sokcho sights like the famous Naksansa Temple.
About Sokcho
Sokcho is a city of Gangwon-do province, lying north of the 38th parallel, which belonged to North Korea from 1945 until the end of the Korean War. Abai Maeul was originally set up as an area to house North Korean refugees in Sokcho due to the separation of the two Koreas. Today, Sokcho is more of a fishing town than a tourist hub, and it attracts domestic tourists as the main draw for their fresh raw fish and seafood.
In this video, we mainly explored the Naksansa temple.
Naksansa is located at Mountain Obong, one of three famous mountains, with Mountain Gumkang and Mountain Seorak in the east of the Taebaek mountain range. The name of Naksansa originated from Mountain Potalaka, where it is believed that Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Gwaneum) always resides and gives Dharma. Gwaneum is symbolized as the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion in Mahayana Buddhism. With over 1300 years of history, innumerable Buddhists, regardless of their social positions and status, are continuously visiting this temple to see real relics of Gwaneum. This temple has a breathtaking scenic beauty of nature, the East Sea, with many sacred treasures and cultural heritages. Naksansa has been one of the most holy and attractive places, not only for Buddhists but also other people, including foreigners in Korea.
There are many other famous legacies like the Statue of Haesu Gwaneum(Seaward-Looking Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Statue was the largest statue in Asia), Botajeon, enshrined many kinds of Bodhisattva including seven Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva such as Chunsu Gwaneum (Sahasrabhuja arya Avalokitesvara who has thousand hands) and Memorial Hall of Ven. Uisang, with records and relics related to his achievements. Naksansa is one of the most favourite places with its one thousand year historic temple, sacred treasures, and cultural heritages. Most of Buddha’s halls and pavilions in Naksansa were burnt to the ground by a catastrophic forest fire on April 5th, 2005. However, in spite of the disastrous conflagration, Naksansa is gradually being reconstructed with the strong support from people and the Buddhists.
