Watch 1080 HD video compilation of #northernlights tour videos in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Kirov, Kostroma regions of Russia, Norway, Finland, Scotland, and Iceland. What causes the northern lights colors? Northern Lights are caused by solar activity. Electrons and protons strike the Earth's magnetic field and drawn towards the poles. Corona poles are located around North and South poles. Different colors caused by quantum transitions in the oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Different colored transitions are quenched at different heights in the atmosphere. Most often, the aurora has a yellow-green color, when oxygen atoms are being excited in the upper atmosphere layers, less often - red and violet. So the precise color at any altitude depends on density and temperature of a local atmosphere layer.
The color of the nothern (polar lights) depends on its glow. The latter is determined on an international scale with a gradation from I to IV points. Auroras with low luminescence intensity (in I, II, less often III points) have a color intensity below the threshold of color perception by the human eye. Such auroras seem colorless to us. Starting from the upper border of the III point mark and further to IV, we perceive the auroras in color.
