Why do most non-professional pianists have such poor rhythm? Discover the crucial role of rhythm in piano playing and learn effective strategies to improve your rhythmic accuracy, timing, and feel.
We explore the fascinating connection between body awareness (interoception), the musicological concept of groove, and the surprising link between your neck and musical rhythm. Discover my personal techniques to improve rhythm such as using 'augmented reality grids' to visualise beats, the power of counting out loud, and why I controversially avoid metronomes in most cases.
Additionally, we discuss the benefits of playing with backing tracks (such as those used by Rockschool), or collaborating with other musicians to develop your rhythmic skills. Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced pianist, this in-depth video offers invaluable insights and actionable advice to help you cultivate a deeply musical and expressive sense of rhythm

Finally, thank you for that! I love moving whether playing violin or piano but most teachers say, you got to be still and movement is not necessary at all. It feels totally unnatural to me to stay motionless (mind you, I love dancing). Of course, balance is important but humans are meant to feel the groove, baby!

Hugely helpful thank you, and very synchronistic as I literally had decided just yesterday that I was just never going to nail the jazz section in Caballos Espanoles which I actually played in my G8 a year ago but was never comfortable with. I recently revisited in the hope of improvement but disappointingly felt more stuck than ever, so figured best to accept defeat and put it away again. But I'm now filled with renewed hope as I haven't been doing or tried any of the things you advise. In fact that jazz part which I really love and want to play well was/is anything but pleasurable for me - every time it feels like running the gauntlet and I couldn't be further from groove if I tried 😂

Yes, that section was quite tricky for me to learn quickly- have you watched my tutorial? 😎 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Lrihps_wbY.html

@HeartofthePiano Yes thanks I did watch it just before my exam when I belatedly discovered your channel and podcast . But that's a good idea to look at it again now I'm revisiting the piece

@HeartofthePiano haha I also watched your Clara Schumann tutorial. You kept stressing how it was a very brave choice , and I kept thinking oh no, I'm not brave I just have no other choice as the Bach piece ,which I'd been working on for 12 months. was still tripping me up! But I somehow managed to get a merit for all my pieces, the other one I did was the Poulenc and I especially found your tutorial really helpful for that.

I always learned that It's more important to get the right notes when you're learning a piece than to get the right rhythm. The muscle memory gets messed up if you keep playing incorrect notes.

The muscle memory also gets messed up if you play the wrong rhythms!! 😂 BTW, I'm not saying it's okay to learn it with the wrong notes- just that it's just as important to get the rhythm right as well!

@@HeartofthePiano I got you. What I try to do is play the rhythm correctly, just at a slower tempo until I get all the notes down, and then speed it up little by little.

@@HeartofthePiano Jazer Lee just had the complete opposite advice in his RU-vid video, so just a little confusing. That's all :) thanks for your videos!
