Video #751: This video will give you a glimpse into what I do behind the scenes with our Studio Cam videos... PcT Studio Tips, Polymer Clay Tutor, Cindy Lietz, Doug Lietz.. More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
This Studio Cam video is raw, unpolished and a little rant-y... but I think you're going to love it!
In it I discuss the most common polymer clay baking question I get over and over again.
"But Cindy you're wrong... the packaging says to bake for only 10 minutes! If I bake an hour my clay will burn!"
The video goes into the frustrating world of baking polymer clay... and it addresses all of the misinformation that is out there.
On the packaging labels, the manufacturers let you know what the correct baking temperature should be... but the suggested baking time they recommend, is not really helpful at all. It means that there is either a whole lot of polymer clay that is either breaking (under baked) or burning (over baked).
This confusion happens for two reasons... one, there just isn't enough room on those tiny little packages to put very much information about the proper way to bake your polymer clay pieces. And two, the companies want to avoid complaints, so they do the safest thing... recommending short baking times to avoid burning the clay.
In this video I explain why polymer clay needs to bake at the right temperature, for the right amount of time, in order to "melt" the plastic particles in the clay to properly cure your pieces all the way through.
The issue is that most oven thermostats are not accurate... which means that you are often not baking at the right temperature.
The short answer to this problem is actually simple... use an oven thermometer... and bake longer.

Some great honesty in this video, for someone who makes their living from this clay to criticize the Clay companies is really very brave and incredibly honest, she doesnt have to do this, it is incredibly helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us, ignore the moaners, having pieces break is all part of learning the craft lol

Hey Ron, Thank you so much for saying that! I appreciate your kind words more than you know. I do my very best to be as honest as possible, because I feel it ultimately brings the highest value to people who love this medium as much as I do. Perhaps I could have been more concise in this particular video as I am in most of my videos, and it would have appeased the moaners a little more, but it is what it is... After 13 years teaching polymer clay professionally I still am answering the same questions about breaking polymer clay and how to choose the right brands and bake it properly so that the user has the best learning experience possible. I honestly wish the manufacturers would do a better job of either removing or fixing low quality clays and giving customers better instructions so I could move on to more exciting ideas, but perhaps I would be working myself out of a job! LOL 😀

@@PolymerClayTutor I agree!! They should at least have a disclaimer on package that states “Baking times are suggested guidelines. For best results, visit our web site for more thorough guidelines.” In this day and age, most everyone has access to internet and at least they would know that if they didn’t do additional research, they kind of have to expect subpar results!

Not to bore you with the same question again but.... I understand the process and the instructions you give but I still have some questions. 1. Does the thickness matter? If thicker, say sculptures not jewelry do you bake longer? 2. When you have thinner and thicker pieces together do you use the same principle and bake for an hour? 3. When baking in stages would you do an hour each time or shorten the time in between bakes until the final bake for an hour? I hope repeating the same old baking question doesn't bother you too much 😄!!

First time using this type of clay. Made a flower, about 6" long, and a butterfly. Flower, petals and all, came out beautifully. A wing, however, fell off the butterfly. What's the best way to fix it? The butterfly is about 2" x 2", wings are about 2 mm thick. Baked for an hour at 300. Since it's a polymer I thought of using rubber cement glue, hot glue, or crazy glue. Just need it to hold long enough to paint. Acrylic paint can give it a weak bond.

you are so right Cindy! people don't believe just how off their oven may actually be, and even oven thermometers so if you sell your stuff, put two in! I do always worry about undercooking, even after an hour I'm afraid my pieces may break later after sale. Is there any way to tell if a bead in particular is cured long enough as you can't really try to bend it etc. Maybe a way to tell when sanding?Also, I have also accidently left my faux gem beads I'm the oven... I fell asleep..yes. for 5 hours. hahahaah AND it was perfectly fine. so I guess then I know they must be done. ;) So everyone stop worrying she knows what she's talking about! If you burnt it, you cooked to hot not too long. No such thing as too long. Thanks Cindy!

I listened to you, and I want to ask: is there any secret that needs to be taken into account when baking Scalpie 3? Because when I keep Scalpay Premo in the oven for an hour, it does not break, but Scalpay 3, under the same conditions, always breaks easily. Is this poor quality clay? They have the same price. Thank you!

Sculpey 3 is a very brittle clay, even when baked properly. I would suggest you mix it with other brands like Premo, Souffle, Cosclay, Cernit, Fimo, etc. to make it stronger. Use way more of the other brand, otherwise you will just make your stronger brand weak. :)

It is frustrating trying to manage so many variables when just figuring out a craft in the very beginning, so I appreciate your very simple, straight-forward message-get an oven thermometer, and use it! Another question. Sometime when I am covering my 10oz. glass bowls I will put on several pieces of my pattern, bake for about 5-10 minutes, let cool, apply the next few pieces, bake 5-10 minutes, etc. until the entire bowl is covered, then bake the whole thing for 40 minutes. I do it so I have a hard edge to to butt the new pattern pieces up against. Is this a sound practice?

Hello, I know this is an older video but with all the testing you have done with baking, I wonder if you might have the answer to a question I am having a hard time finding any info on? I do small, super detailed sculptures with Premo clay and I have been finding it is easier to do 2-3 bakes to lock in parts as I go. I know you can rebake sculpey, but I was wondering if you can do 10 minute cures (just enough to harden that outer layer) or if it is best to do the full cure for each fresh part each time it is baked? I've seen some people mention that doing short partial cures can lead to the clay being weaker in the long run even if you will ultimately end up baking the full time needed, but it always seems like they are going by third person accounts rather than any actual experience. The reason I would prefer to go with shorter partial cures if it doesn’t effect strength is I find even with proper tenting and insulation with tile in my pans that I tend to get slightly darker colors (especially on lighter clay colors) on the parts that have gotten 2-3x the baking times of the pieces in comparison to the pieces that are added in for the final bake. Thank you in advance if you can offer any advice.

You have useful information. I have to be honest though during your sample cam video it felt as though you were mocking the average crafter when you said....you go out and setart selling your items then they break. Hi there, I am truly sorry that I came across condescending to you. It was not meant to be hurtful, but rather helpful to you. Of course I was a beginner. But I never tried to sell my things until they were professional enough that I knew that they would not fall apart after someone had purchased it. It is not fair to a consumer to buy things that are poorly made. Not only will the seller not get another sale from that customer, but it won't be good for their reputation as the disappointed customers, spread the word. The beginner crafter would be better off making things for themselves and their friends for gifts and getting feedback on how well it wears and any improvements that could be made before going to market with the product. I should have perhaps said things in a different way so that more people would learn from the advice, rather than get offended by it, like you have. As far as being humble, I feel am am very willing to admit mistakes and learn from them. It is a shame that you no longer want to learn from my videos... like you said, there is useful information in them.

Sad story: I bought an oven thermometer and hung it off the rack of the oven to bake a few small items. It showed my oven's temp gauge to be extremely off (75 degrees), but I decided to trust the thermometer and adjusted the oven. Unfortunately I burned my creations to a crisp. I believe the problem is that the temperature is uneven. I'm going to try to place the oven thermometer as close to my baking pan as possible. I might also try the convection feature on my oven. Sad story, but hopefully this will help someone else.

Can you state what the ideal temp is to bake in an oven at a temperature for a length of time and on what type of surface (rack, baking sheet, wax paper, etc.)? I think that is the basic question and if there are specifics such as altitude, weather, size of project, whatever then you can add comments on application verses a video on how no one can tell anyone what to do and how to do it whether it is a >manufacturer" or a "professional with experience". @barockeuse
@barockeuse 5 лет назад
Yes. Because it is the temperature of each piece which is needed for the polymerisation. So it is the temperature inside the oven which is important. But if you try to bake a very thick piece with a very thin piece, it will take a longer time for the thick piece to reach it's polymerisation temperature. So let the two pieces bake during the time adapted to the thickest piece, the thin one will support it. As she says, you can even let the pieces bake for 1 hour, the pieces will be more resistant and also more flexible. But the main thing is to never let the temperature pass over the maximum indicated on the packet of the clay you've used.

So I just watched this video and I finally have an answer to how long to bake. My other questions are, some clays say 275 degrees while others say 230, i.e. sculpey original and III vs. sculpey premo. Is this accurate, and if so, how can one combine the two regarding baking temps?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
Yeah each brand has a different temperature it needs to bake at to properly cure. If you decide to mix brands together, you will need to play around with the temperature to figure out what will work best for your new custom blend. Keep in mind that polymer clay should be baked as hot as possible but not so hot that it burns. SO if the bulk of your clay mixture needs to be baked at 275F and the rest of it 230F then you probably will be able to bake at pretty close to 275F. But if the bulk of your mix is a brand that bakes at 230F than you won't be able to go too much higher than the 230F or it will likely scorch. Put on your virtual lab coat and do a little testing! :)

Thank you for the video. You are very talented and nice. However, it took a long time and a lot of "apologizing" for the PC companies...and I still didn't get an answer on baking times. Is it 1 hour regardless of the thickness, 1 hour per 1/4 inch. etc? I also realize that there are many variables (PC brands, composition, colors, evenness of oven temps, even the accuracy of a thermometer, chemicals imparted from hands and/or tools to the clay that affect curing/hardening times). Experience is the best teacher and sometimes that involves sitting there and watching something cook and much trial and error. Having said all that...what is a reasonable rule of thumb?. I would think thickness needs to be accounted for somewhere in your response, although though I am not a professional; I can barely spell polymer cay. Thank you for taking them time to educate us. I gave it a like and subscribed because you are very nice, talented and well intentioned, but I completed by taxes in less time and still don't know what your recommendations are (if it proprietary given, it is your profession, I understand). Hi Tanner, thank you for your kind input. I am aware that this behind the scenes chat video isn't as concise or as helpful to some people. I have several videos on my channel that will help with baking. In general I bake all my pieces from paper thin to 1/2 inch thick, for one hour at the recommended temp for the brand. It may seem like over kill for the very thin pieces, but they tend to be especially vulnerable to breakage, so since it does not hurt them to bake longer, I always do, just to be sure. The most important thing is to have an oven thermometer and to protect the piece from underneath and above, so that you don't get any scorching. Watch these videos, they will help: Polymer Clay - Should it Still Be Flexible After Baking? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yRdqUY8-9Ds.html Polymer Clay Baking Tips - Using a Foil Pan Lid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3dhqyHEoafA.html Baking Polymer Clay in a Convection Oven ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uiZMCfE0tec.html Baking Polymer Clay in Toaster Oven Without Burning ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NUSy6gR6CzU.html

Can we bake wood in the oven with polymer clay on it without it igniting or burning
@MichelMcDonald
@MichelMcDonald 3 года назад
Thank you for this. I was wondering if perhaps that was the reason my project was so brittle. I mean, besides the fact that it was Fima soft that was old and brittle, when I baked it for just 30 minutes it broke easily. What's funny is I watched this video yesterday and I dreamed about having a piece of that project in my hand and the outside was hard, but it broke into pieces and the inside of it were soft. I had what you said in this video being said in my dream and when I woke up I was like wow, I can't believe that was my dream lol.

Contrary to some people's comments, I think this video has a good way of explaining it all. Cindy is clearly tired of all the repetitive questions and who can blame her? Even with all this explaining theres still people asking about temperature. Read your clay package!! it depends on what brand of clay you have, just bake for longer and watch for oven spikes. Although I have always baked much longer than recommended, it's still at the correct temperature and usually covered. I did like the way she explained it using the visualization of a pillar candle. There are still some experienced clay artists who don’t always tell you the correct information! When I start to teach, I would like my students to watch this video! It's useful for all beginners and those people complaining about burnt, or indeed, broken or cracked pieces...... So thank you Cindy! I personally think you did a great job! ❤

♥♥♥ Thank you so much Nicki for your kind words! I could have been a little kinder with my candor way back then when I did this video. The negative comments did sting, but there were enough people like you that saw past the "snark" and got some value out of the video. Over the years I have come to realize, with all the misinformation out there, people are bound to not trust some of the information they are hearing... even from those who have been in the biz awhile... there's a lot of stuff out there, that I don't trust either. I have also become more patient and understanding when it comes to baking questions. I have been answering the same questions for over 15 years... same answers too! LOL I've just gotten more gentle with the delivery! By the way I do a weekly LIVE Q&A Broadcast on Wednesdays at 12:00 Noon Pacific Time on Facebook if you want to pop in facebook.com/polymerclay We should be returning to RU-vid soon, but until then, you can see what we've been up to!

Hello I just watched your video. I am a sculptor but I do giant monuments classical realism. I’m actually thinking about making some wands for grandchildren. I thought wouldn’t it be cute to make creatures on the end of a wooden stick. My question is can I put a wooden stick in the oven with a creature sculpted to the stick? I’m wondering if the wood will burn? 😬 I’ve made some snakes on wands with apoxie sculpt but that’s like sculpting with bread dough. Have you ever had wood in a project?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor Год назад
Polymer clay is perfect for baking onto wood and making wands with. I would use Cosclay. It is strong and flexible after baking and much safer for kids to play with than Apoxie Sculpt (and cheaper and easier to use). Polymer clay bakes at a very low temp 230F - 325F depending on brand and wood needs to be much hotter at over 500F before it starts to burn... so it's fine to bake clay on. Just so you know, a chopstick is a great 'stick' to use for the center of your wand. It's stiff, and just the right length. Have fun!

Thank you! I like to use convection oven (fan) with heat coming from both the top and the bottom if possible. This makes for a more even heat. Don't forget to use an oven thermometer. Most oven dials are incorrect.

If I don't have electricity can I use my wood stove? Can I put the tin foil and bake it in the wood stove? I know you probably don't get this question but if I am on a roll and electric goes out.... You get it .. I think! Greetings from Bulgaria and God bless
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 лет назад
I think since it would be tricky to control the temperature precisely in a wood stove, it might be hard to bake polymer clay in one. You really need to hold it at exactly the right temp for the brand otherwise it will be either underbaked or burnt.

thanks so much for your videos. Been baking all my pieces for a solid hour and love the results! I did have a question. I saw a video where someone set (pressed down) a cabochon into polymer clay on a ceramic tile, cut around it and removed excess clay, beautifully decorated it with more polymer, painted with mica, etc. But, they didn't show removing the piece FROM the tile before baking. I don't know if that was edited out of their video or removing wasn't necessary. DOES it have to be lifted off the tile before baking or will it release from the tile when it hardens during the baking process? Sorry if you've answered this somewhere else. I appreciate you!

Thanks for all that info. Feels silly asking this, but is it ok if the oven temperature fluctuate slightly? Like if it stays between 265-275?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 месяцев назад
It's not a silly question. Sure a little fluctuation won't matter too much. Try to fluctuate on the higher side than the lower side. The hotter the piece bakes at (without scorching) the stronger the piece is. Make some test pieces to find that sweet spot for your oven. Good luck!

Can you please help me? I have baked my clay earrings on a glass tray, I have gotten a thermometer and put it just as the instructions said at 130° C. The brand is sculpey. I use baking sheet on top of the clay but it keeps breaking, I bake it for an hour not 10 mins, I bake it for 1 hour at 130° and turn of the oven and leave the jewelry in the oven for another hour with the oven turned off so the jewelry can cool. I also preheat the oven for about 15-20 mins, please help me I don’t know what else to do I have tried 3 batches and all of them turned out the same, I have tried different thicknesses in the same batch each time and same results, there isn’t any discoloration...Idk what to do I have so many pieces ready to bake but I’m scared they will all turn out the same
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
Sadly Sculpey III is a weak and brittle clay and will break no matter how you bake it. If you're making jewelry, switch to another brand like Premo, Soufflé, Fimo Professional, Fimo Classic, Cernit, Kato Polyclay or Cosclay. As far as how you're baking, you don't need to fuss with leaving it in the oven to cool down. I take pieces out right away and have found no difference in the strength. Thickness doesn't matter either. A properly baked piece can be paper thin or a 1/2" thick (don't go thicker than that though or you can get cracking), and it won't be brittle, if you are using a good brand, baking at the right temp (use an oven thermometer) and baking for an hour. I know it is frustrating right now, but if you stick it out a while longer and try a few different things, you'll get it. I suggest you make some test strips to practice with, until you get the perfect baking set up.

Thank you, your image of a candle is clever but ... the clay does not melt ! The fact is that at a certain temperature, the molecules of this pre-plastic stuff create links between themselves so that some bigger blocks of molecules are created, and the solid plastic is made. This physical phenomenon is called "polymerisation"; "poly" because a number of molecules group together without being able to separate later. Unlike the wax of the candle .. there is no going backward, no return to a moldable dough.

I bake even tiny paper thin pieces for at least 45 mins to be absolutely sure it has baked properly. When it is baked at the correct temp for the brand (using oven thermometer), there's protection underneath (a tile or a stack of cardstock) and protection from above (a foil pan lid) then your piece, can be in the oven for hours and still be fine... so don't worry about over-baking your piece. I know of people who have accidentally left their pieces in the oven overnight and they were fine. It is better to bake long and be strong, than bake too short and have it break.
@marlikesun

I prefer clay to be as hard as possible but the shade darker is unacceptable to me for translucent and white! What I'm doing from now on is baking colored pieces for an hour and white pieces for 35 minutes, premo seems strong even with the reduced time so I'm hoping this will work out because I don't know what else to do. What I discovered with the thermometer is that my oven takes about 25 mins to reach the final temperature it will maintain, and it's always 10C hotter than what it's supposed to be

Hi will the clay affect the oven for baking food?
@chey7TH

Hello ma'm, or anyone else who's reading this, I just started working with polymer clay. I am looking to make heads or busts. How, I bought Cernit polymer clay that is meant for doll making, but it is so very soft! It melts as soon as you touch it. So I am now looking to sculpt the face on a round object (like the back of a spoon) so I can pre sculpt the face like a mask, and then add more clay to the back of the head later. But I am not sure what to sculpt on, because I need to be able to put it in the oven, and what to put inside of my heads as an armature. Will foil be oven safe? And is it absolutely safe for me to bake the clay in my home oven? My brother bakes his broccoli in there everyday and I'm so glad that he's finally eating veggies, haha. I don't want to put his health or taste of his broccoli in danger. If anyone has any tips for me please let me know. Thank you so much!

If I bake a piece of jewelry and its snapping right in half can I put it back in the oven to continue to cure. My issue is I used sculpty followed the baking directions and my peices are so fragile there just snapping.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 лет назад
In general I would say yes, definitely put your piece in and bake it longer too see if that helps. But if you're using SculpeyIII you might be out of luck. It is a very brittle clay and no matter how well you bake it, you're going to run into problems. That is why I use Premo, Souffle, Cernit or Fimo Professional instead. They are much better quality and won't break as easiliy.

Just baked 2 different color hoops in the same batch. One was yellow and the other is green. The green hoops came out fine but the yellow looks like it now has green spots? Is it possible for the green color to transfer onto the yellow?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
I am guessing it is more of a temperature spike issue in your oven, causing little scorch marks on your clay (dark yellow could look green), rather than the color jumping from one piece to another. Unless you had a little green clay on your fingers that transferred to your yellow piece that you didn't know happened. It is a little tricky to diagnose without seeing the pieces for myself. Anyway, I suggest you watch all my baking videos and brand videos to see if you can get to the bottom of the problem. Good luck and let me know if you figure it out!

Some clays are not that sticky, so when you just try and stick pieces together without adding a liquid clay or a wire or stick inside, they will just fall apart in the oven when they get warm. I would get some liquid clay and some toothpicks. Poke the toothpick into the body (cut shorter if you have to) where you want to put the head... put a little liquid clay on the toothpick and on the clay where the head and body will touch and put the head on the toothpick. This will help give it strength and keep them from falling apart in the oven, or later when you bake it. I hope that helped!

I made mini candy canes for my first try at polymer clay. They came out okay I guess. Are they supposed to be hard & stiff, or somewhat rubbery & flexible? My canes are about 1/16 of an inch thick & 3/4" tall. I baked them for 15 minutes on 275⁰. I did not preheat my little toaster oven first, but I added 5 more minutes to the baking time to make up for it. So....mine are somewhat stiff & flex without cracking. Is that how they are supposed to come out?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor Год назад
Hi there, polymer clay once it is baked, is still pretty flexible... it won't come out hard like resin or other hard plastics. Some brands are stiffer than others but especially when the pieces are thin, they will never be hard as a rock. As far as baking, I would still bake them for a little longer, even though they are on the small side... especially if they are going to be played with, because you may find that they could break over time. I bake all my pieces (even paper thin ones) for 45-60 mins using an oven thermometer so I know it's the correct temp for the brand. I have tons of videos on baking polymer clay that should help you improve your work. Have fun and good luck!

Hi +Mm Hm yes you can bake your piece multiple times. Watch the other baking videos in our channel (there are many) so that you are baking correctly and you should be able to strengthen up your pieces. If you are using a poor quality brand Like Craftsmart or Sculpey III though, it may not help that much, since they are brittle clays even if baked properly.

I've heard from another source that the first time you bake the clay is the most important. Well really any time that you bake "fresh" clay really. On the PCA forum, they state that the chemists of the clay say that you need to bake for the entire time each time you add unbaked clay. This will ensure strength. That the clay bakes the best the first time. What are your thoughts on this Cindy?

Yes. Polymer clay bakes at 230F-300F range depending on brand, but paper will combust at 451F. Which means... as long as you don't let the paper/cardstock touch an element or the sides of the oven, the paper/cardstock will be fine if you bake it under your clay. Do make sure you are very smart and careful about it though...you don't want a fire in your oven.
