@@Ned.1274 they likely started out this way in England, as these were readily available "country breeds". Greyhounds were illegal to own unless you were nobility, so poachers bred them with collies to enjoy the hunting prowess and speed but disguise the greyhoundness. Nowadays the category is very broad: any sighthound x any working breed (to include bully breeds, they had jobs originally, even if the jobs are all rightfully banned now (dog fighting, bull baiting etc). A "longdog" is 2 sighthound breeds mixed (ie. Greyhound x basenji, deerhound x whippet) My lurcher is a soft as shite and very silly saluki x border collie mix
Of the 5 lurchers I know, 3 have behavioural issues (imo) due to the owners’ not getting their stuff together (dead cats and blood in the dog park, lunge barking etc). The other 2 are absolute sweethearts partly due to genetics and partly due to wonderful homes. I would trust then with baby rabbits they’re so soft. I think the point is when a lurcher is not in a good place it can be more problematic than with other breeds.
The local pawn shop had one where the owner would leave and the dog would understand to watch the people and act quite friendly i think his name was archie
You consider in Tibet and Mongolia they are the family dog that the kids play with and watch over their herds. I imagine has more to do with peoples interaction than anything else.
It amazes me how many people apparently think that these massive 200+ pound herding dogs are not going to be challenging in a typical domestic situation.
I have four Tibetan mastiff and I’ve been told they’re considered extremely dangerous I can see it but I work with them every day I never take a day off and I am hard-core consistent on working with their obedience and working with strangers

A TM is going to be one of my next pups here in a few years. I've had many different breeds of doggos from pits, to chihuahua, to havanese, to labs. Is your training and different for the TM or is it pretty similar for other dogs? My wife is trying to convince me to get a different dog but I've always wanted this big floof. And what're your most trick/behavioral training you do with them?
Well it a mix of hunting and a working dog. Both know type of dogs that tend to bite when not train or worked right. So it would be very clear on what could happen.

@@garyhyndman1105 I'm not agree with the expert but i understand why those dogs would have a high bite rate than other dogs. Those dog are not common in my area but hunting and working breeds are I seen first hand when those dogs don't get train or worked(play with). They can get out of hand quick. Beyond what most people know how to deal with. They dog you seen must of been train .breed right or worked(play with). That why they are not biting people. If you know what he dog was breed for. It's give you an idea what it will be like. So you do things to keep it in good mental place. If it a hunting dog. You may have to give it something to hunt or take it out on the hunt. It does not has to be the real thing but it has to give the dog the feel of the hunt. So throwing the ball or going for a long walk gives the feel of the hunt. Now when you don't do it. It will hut the nearest thing it things It see as prey. It could be any thing. from toys to people.

@@garyhyndman1105 I’ve owned working lurchers all my life & worked on greyhound training yards in England and Australia. I’ve met the most placid greyhounds & lurchers anyone could ever imagine meeting, to greyhounds and lurchers who wouldn’t think twice about attacking kennel mates & biting people without warning. I would say (in my experience on a whole) the greyhound is a much calmer breed around humans, the reason being simply, genetics. you can trace the racing greyhound (and KC greyhounds) back generations & 9/10 a true dog man breeds the best to the best, slowly eradicating all negative behavioural issues. Thus creating a more well balanced dog for their needs. On the other hand regarding lurchers, there is no real recorded breeding history, meaning you don’t truly know what is in the dogs breeding. This is all good and well for the working man who’s dogs are kennelled, then let out to work but to the average joe collecting (for example) a bull x greyhound from someone on gumtree for £250 you will never truly know the temperament of previous generations which is where you are starting to roll the dice regarding temperament & behaviour. Then if it’s poorly trained and lacks stimulation, you have a strong hybrid dog which could if it wanted to, cause damage. Sorry for long winded RU-vid post.

My friend adopted a Lurcher at the start of this year, she was a sweetheart to humans but could be very snappy with dogs other than the two dogs she lived with. Or so we thought as once she and another dog my friend owned were fighting over some christmas socks and she ended up killing it. 🥲
Pit bulls aren’t dangerous and when the USA did an experiment they scored 2nd in a test for the kindest dog after the golden retriever. The only reason people think they are dangerous is becuase the wrong people own one
You call every type of bull dog or mastiff as a pitbull though when in reality most people with real American pitbull terriers don’t even have them anywhere near streets or ever left unattended because of the ban these mixed breeds your people create to try and replicate the look of pitbull are far more dangerous and in the wrong hands things like Sharpei’s mixed with staffys that’s not a standard
True, my dog when I was a kid was a lurcher crossed with a border collie, my dad had him well disciplined, but he always warned me to avoid playing with him if he was trying to rest or it was particularly hot. I never had an issue with him, but one day he bit a kid who put his hand through the garden gate. The boys father want the dog put down, cops came, but dad fought for him and the guy backed down. He lived to the ripe old age of 17, the only time I seen my old man cry was when he told me he had to put that dog down, never seen him cry when he had to bury his brothers or sisters. When the vet gave the dog the injection, he hurt the animal and he beared his teeth, the vet cuffed the dog. Dad said he really regret not laying the vet out for that, felt like he wasn't there for his buddy at the end, not sure why I'm telling this story, we miss you boy.

@@joker0206 the vet may have felt he was in danger of being bitten. That said, they get a tranquilizer first( the dog gets the tranquilizer, not the vet), then the euthanasia.
I work in a vet clinic. One day we had a Tibetan Mastiff come in for a surgery. I wasnt part of his care team so I didn’t work with him at all. They did the surgery, took him to a recovery run. He was completely unconscious and still intubated (we keep them intubated until they begin to wake up from anesthesia in case anything goes wrong with recovery and we need to hook them up again) a very petite nurse was in the run with him waiting until some sign he was waking up so she could extubate. Our recovery runs have one end that I a glass wall separating the runs from the rest of the treatment/hospital area so everyone in the clinic can observe recovering patients. She wasn’t in there more than 60 seconds and I happen to glance over. The dog went from flat out cold, to fully awake in an instant. He lunged up, grabbed her by the waist and threw her across the run and into the glass window so hard I heard her head hit the window from the other side of a large busy room. It was terrifying, not a dog to mess around with
You guys made the error -not the dog. It wakes up after anesthesia and doesn't recognize where it is and sees someone it doesn't know occupying its space! Horrible practice of veterinary medicine.
I adopted a lurcher (crossed with greyhound and collie), she was a stray and I absolutely agree with you. She is an adorable laid back dog most of the time but can switch seemingly unprovoked and become irritated and aggressive towards everyone but myself. Definitely a breed that has a range of temperaments.

Think there needs to be a course for people to own certain dog breeds like working breeds or live stick guardian breeds, people assume all dogs are meant to be pets when in reality a lot of them need consistent training and stimulation
I think in Germany there are breeds that require owners to pass tests in order to be allowed to keep them/walk them in public. But i don't know any details
No people just need to not be stupid and actually research the breeds, I have a caucasian and she's literally just a giant fuzz ball. These guys are free thinkers and you have to do training according to that. As my vet says she's not stupid like a lab 😂 Otherwise yes all dogs are pets, especially Caucasians. All they want to do is lay in front of the ac and sleep, or talk at you from across the room to go pet them because they're too lazy to get up so you have to 😂 but in your perspective even weiner dogs would need courses as they are working dogs, they were bred for fox hunting, most small dogs even were bred to kill mice and rats. All dogs are different and require different training and different methods of training. My caucasian learned by just using the time out method and we did that once and she's never gotten into the trash ever since. They are very emotional and love their families they never want to disappoint you but because they are emotional yelling and hitting/tapping them does not work and that's what seems to be most people's problems my mom was a dog trainer I was raised training dogs but most people just seem to yell no and think that it actually works especially for small dogs and that's why chihuahuas are typically so vicious because the problems are never actually addressed and solved. I'd take a caucasian over a chihuahua any day.
@@sasori2425 Researching the breed and actually doing enough research on them you'll find typically the best methods on how to train them as well. Actually doing research is different then only looking up breed statistics, I was calling breeders and staying in contact with the person I bought my caucasian from to actually know the breed and dog I was getting. Doing real research is finding out what methods of training are usually good for the breed, and even though my puppy is I'd like to say perfectly trained I still think about putting her in obedience classes so we can still improve together. As far as breed bans go they don't really matter to me, statistically you're way more likely to be bitten by a golden retriever than a pit bull, they have double the bite rate than pits do and I've been attacked by one to actually know, yet tons of people say and think that they're one of the best dogs breeds out there. It's not the dog it's all about how you raise/train it, but you fail to do that's why there's guys like these to help people. Or just don't get a dog, my apparently most dangerous dog in the world is way better behaved than most dogs I know even my uncles german shepherd. People think of banning her breed because the owners were stupid upsets me deeply. But I'm glad I'm one of the ones that's changing their stereotyping for the better.

We had a lurcher and she couldn't have had a better temperament, she was great with people and any dogs. She loved playing with larger breeds and knew when to be submissive but was equally gentle with smaller dogs.
I had a Caucasian shepherd when I left the armed forces, he was absolutely shit at protection work and guarding but was FAULTLESS with my kids. Unfortunately he unexpectedly passed from a brain aneurysm at 16 months old
I think a lot of people forget that a lurcher is just a sighthound mixed with another working breed. A lot of us houndy people think of small, laid back, friendly greyhound-lab crosses (or scruffy greyhound-terrier crosses) when we hear the word 'lurcher', but a lurcher can actually be a large and high energy dog depending on the breed it's mixed with. Add in the fact that most lurchers aren't the product of intentional and responsible breeding but are often the result of accidental breeding by irresponsible people instead, meaning they get mistreated, poorly socialised, and dumped at rescues, and you can end up with a frightened, powerful, anxious dog that gets bored easily and has a wicked prey drive.
In a nearby rescue center for dogs with bite history they have a pitbull- Greyhound mix. They say on their webside whoever thought that mixing these two breeds whould be a good idea deserves a darwin award.
I was not expecting the lurcher! My neighbour rescued one named Prince and he is the loveliest, happiest, most hyper dog I have ever met. He’s always really happy to greet you. ❤

Yes but on average they have agressive instincts. That is the issue. It takes a lot of handling and most people don't know how or don't have the time. I know a few very sweet shepherds ass wel but I also know quite a lot who behave or have behaved violently to other dogs or more

I have 3 German shepherds and recently rescued 2 Caucasian shepherds which are quite rare in south African. My gut instinct is that these dogs are super intelligent and don't take well to other dogs and ppl. They need time. I'm slowly befriending them by treating them super special but I have not yet petted them. Those dogs are no ordinary shepherd but I think with time and love, trust will be built but I wouldn't take my shepherds near them. Even tho my male German shepherd is large and a super Alpha. I don't doubt for a second that Caucasian make won't rip my boy to shreds.
Here's the thing, in the right hands any dog (regardless of breed) can be an amazing dog. You just need to make sure that you're dedicated to giving them the best lifestyle for their breed and being consistent with their training and socialization. It basically comes down to owners realizing they've adopted a living, breathing, sentient companion and not a disposable object. Sounds like your parents did an excellent job. 😁

I'm romanian and caucasian shepherds are used in our country to direct and protect sheeps. They can get to over 100 kilograms and are capable of fighting with BEARS. You don't want to mess around with them, especially you don't want to transpass. Many sheep owners put those dogs in pretty skinny chains just so that they can brake them in case someone transpasses. But if they get to know you they can become pretty loyal and sweet dogs.
mine is 7 now she is fine can put on a scary act in the garden but that fades as she gets closer to you. she gets on great with other dogs and kids she meets.
Had our Lurcher (greyhound, border collie and bearded collie) since he was a puppy and he’s coming up to 10 years old now. Never had a single problem with him around people. He is a sofa dog and very tolerant of people, he’s been calm and gentle with everyone he’s met. Wouldn’t say he is a dangerous dog in any sense of the word.
You should be aware of 2 things. 1. Pitbulls score 89 on the temperament scale above many other breeds like many small breeds, the border collie, the popular husky, some hounds to mention a few. So why does an amiable breed cause so much damage? 2. Because most of these pitbulls are not pitbulls. They just have to have the look. The dog could be an American Bulldog or a boxer mix. So many "pitbull" mixes don’t have a drop of pitbull in their DNA. This is probably the most maligned breed of all time, especially for a breed with a good temperament
How common a breed is could affect the bite rates. You’re probably more likely to get bit by a Golden Retriever than a Mountain Cur based on that view.
I honestly think that the numbers have to be skewed. Lurchers are extremely abundant over there and every shelter has some they need to find homes for. It's similar in the US, but with pit bulls. You will never find a sweeter dog, yet our statistics for pit bull bites and attacks are high compared to other breeds, and I think that's because there's so many of them in comparison to other breeds. I truly think similar is happening with lurchers, that they're getting all the bite statistics because they are more abundant
@@LemontheDestroyer Pit bulls are more prevalent because when they go at it, they really go. I'd imagine some of the smaller terrier breeds can be more snap happy, but you can generally just flick them away.

Had to give a lurcher back to a rescue home once. She was a beautiful loving dog but she had a tendency to bite when she was startled or if you touched her hind legs. Very sad to let her go back but we found out we were expecting a baby so there was no way we could take the risk, especially since she had bitten my wife's parents twice.
@@brianadams6628 hi Brian, the rescue home was a specialist in lurchers. No they never put a healthy dog down. They informed me shortly after that a foster home that was looking after her temporarily had decided to keep her, so she ended up in a loving home with the capacity to cater to her needs.
I once had a neighbour who had a Tibetan Mastiff. He was very kind and never caused any harm. One of my other neighbours got to dogsit a fluffy poodle named Angel who was the second most aggressive dog I’ve seen in my life. The most aggressive I’ve seen was a small dog that almost bit my golden retriever on the nose. That dog was not any taller that my golden’s legs.
I had a tibetan mastiff with 3 kids and 3 cats he used to run the streets with all the kids. All my neighbours loved him and would let him come in to say hello never had a problem my beautiful bear rip.x

The first Tibetan Mastiff i ever met was the absolute sweetest most gentle giant, so much so my late terrier shepherd mix (who in his prime was 15 pounds) loved him and my boy hated other dogs besides his sibling. My old man went and sat in front of Senghe (TM) as he was laying down and Senghe just started licking my little old mans back until he fell asleep and used his leg as a pillow. They did everything right with him and i miss him dearly, the last time i saw him he celebrated his 12th birthday. I doubt I’ll meet another like him.
Probably because the "new" trend of mixing Lurchers i've seen lately. Bull-terrier types are often used to give gameness, some also ad collie blood for brains,to the mix. Or shall i say a whole lot of you dont know what you end up with.... In america they call everything with any kind of bully in, a "pit mix" . One of the reasons pitbulls end up getting all the bite stats.
You gotta remember that most people don't care for dogs properly anymore. They treat them like spoilt human babies. If the dog is locked inside all day and scared of screaming spoilt kids, you have a recipe for disaster. You probably don't meet up with all the bad owners who never walk them.

And to combat his point, it might be true that "lurchers" have the most bites on record, but a much larger amount of dogs fit in the "lurcher" category than other breeds, because its not one single breed. A lurcher is any cross breed between a sighthound and a working dog. So there are dozens of different crosses all called "lurchers" which in flates their statistics. Also, for this reason, lurchers can vary massively in their temperment depending on what they are a mix of. But that aside, he has said something in the past that I know is 100%, because it's my field of study. He might offer really good advice on how to train bad habits out of your dog. But that doesn't make everything he says on RU-vid true.

theres a lot of misunderstandings with chihuahuas i think. a lot of the time they're aggressive as a result of being understimulated, treated more as an accessory than an animal with independence, and just a result of fear. they are living animals they don't want to be pucked up 24/7 especially if theyre just relaxing and they want to play and run around and not be forced to be cuddled with all the time. and if they havent been socialized to big dogs properly it is understandable that they'd react badly out of fear especially when even an average sized dog is big enough to fit a chihuahuas head in its mouth.
Chihuahuas are little ankle-biters. There is a big difference between a dog like a Chi that would have a hard time breaking your skin and one that could pull you down and kill you.
@@DoubleDogDare54 Chi's have absolutely NO problem breaking skin. I'm speaking from experience. Their bite is hard AF and it draws blood every time. A woman got her eye lid ripped off by a Chi.
I've owned 2 Tibetan mastiffs, which are a good breed. they can be a little stubborn, great family dogs, and very gentle around kids, going to protect the family at any cost, they don't require a lot of exercise after growing out of the puppy phase. they generally aren't that aggressive. but, if you don't socialize them with other dogs and people, they can tend to be nervous and project that nervousness as aggression. over all a great breed, takes a lot of care and patience, but most definitely worth it. not recommended for a first timer.

they are one of the top biters in North America: the top3 breeds (bite history, NOT kill history) Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Jack Russels. I love Dachsies, but they are NOT for people with little kids. The breed looks like a hound, yet behaves like a terrier. Love to chase and kill anything with fur on it.

She has brought me squirrels/grass snakes / bugs . I live in texas so this is common. I think this is also determined by each individual dog as well. In my opinion
The lurcher surprised me we used to have a pack of 7 that we used for hunting and they were as loving as they were disciplined, then we got grey hound and she was so timid and hated other dogs
Yeah I borrowed my mates trio of terror lurchers are awesome for hunting and his were super chill and ready for a good hunt. Even had my own way of guiding them that my friend was mystified by because all he thought I did was go shoot something and they'd fetch. Which wasn't nearly the case. Calculated pack style Hunt that they absolutely loved. I think if the dog has the stimulie it needs it won't be "bad" a lot of the time people get these big dogs and breeds and just keep them at home. The dogs on this list would make good gaurd dogs for a farm where they can free roam. Not be put in a cage or whatever.
I have a lurcher cross with a bulldog and I can guarantee that he never bit anyone of my family members or other people in public, he just gets a little playful every now and again but hes chill

Just because breed characteristics can create a foundation for problems doesn't change the fact that really any dog that isn't socialized and trained properly can be a problem. Yeah I have a Caucasian and I made sure to socialize him from the start to make him understand most people aren't a threat. Consistency is the key in my eyes, always make them eat after you're done eating, don't let them get away with things you don't like, correct them when they start fights you don't want them to start (other dogs), and remember: a tired dog is a happy dog. I tell everyone who asks me about him that this breed is not for everyone.
@@honkworld9405dogs in general really aren’t for everyone. You have to put in work for every kind of dog. In that regard it is just like raising a human but with half of the work. If you can’t handle a dog, get a fish. And if you can’t even get that, just get a plant or a pet rock.
What about wolfs. I’ve never seen someone successful house train a wolf into not being a lethal threat. Now that’s an extreme example, but No matter how much training, Domestication aka selective breading aka genetic selection occurs, the number one influence on lethality, is genetics in the case of dogs. I've watched so many of your videos but I only see a certain set of dogs. I'd love to hear about a bigger variety of dogs. Also can we have a little chihuahua episode? I have 6 dogs and my chihuahua is by far the most difficult
Chihuahuas are often aggressive and bite, but their problems are underreported because they're small and people give them a pass. If a Chihuahua attacks you, you can probably fend that off, so a lot of people laugh it off instead of correcting it. But that's also why they continue to be annoying to people and other dogs. Chihuahuas try to attack my pitbull all the time but you know if my dog defended himself, he'd be the one getting ticketed.
i have had three now they are great dogs need early socialising but are a happy herder in general. not good for neighbourhoods as they do like a good bark every hour or so haha
My neighbour has one. He's only about 4 months. I've heard them being dangerous, that's why I play with him every time I met him. 😄 He's very sweet, though. Very social with people and and other dogs.
As a dog behaviourist I expect you know that a lurcher is "any sighthound mixed with any other working breed" which leads to HUGE variation, so much that I rarely see lurcher listed as a "breed" when selecting options for pet insurance. An unfair and inaccurate inclusion on this list as you cannot possibly group all of us as one breed. Example; Italian greyhound x Jack Russell = lurcher. So is Irish wolfhound x ridgeback. Not exactly the same breed eh?

When you’re a specialist and only called in to work with dogs with bad behavior it’s easy to form a bias. There’s probably plenty out there just like the one you mentioned and he just happens to meet the poorly trained ones unfortunately
I work in doggy daycare and have met a total of three tibetans. All of them males, two of which were entire. They are very stoic breeds which have a natural energy that commands respect from the other dogs. Gentle giants that want to chill, and unlike other dogs like sighthounds like many lurchers, they never really snap if a dog runs them over while playing. I've witnessed cocky little dogs lunging at them and they don't care. But also, they get the zoomies every so often, and play beautifully with dogs. What makes the difference, I believe, is that all three of these dogs have owners who's whole family have owned mastiffs their whole life, and usually they start with an 'easier' mastiff before jumping up a tibetan. had three still have one and a Caucasian they are pretty placid dogs love to meet people and never show aggression . unless they are behind the garden gate they they will bark . a am suprised he did not mention malamutes they do bite a lot and get problems as they age . and dont like training.
@@rileyelledge6056 yeah exactly, I think a breed as a whole being characterised by purely negative experiences can lead to a generalised problematising of specific breeds which can massively undervalue the character of the dog itself
@@ConanCamelPuncher you're dumb if you think Tibetan mastiffs are aggressive. I've owned many and currently got one. Never ever have mine or my buddies ever been aggressive. If you attack the owner then you'll get fucked up
I've never met one and googled them to learn more and that's the first thing that came up about lurchers: Their friendly and laid back nature makes them perfect for this kind of work - and it's what also makes them great family pets because they tend to get on really well with children
Honestly, I think that people tend to adopt dogs which are considered "easy" and then don't put the work to educate them. Which end in agression and biting.
The shepherd one makes sense, takes a lot of energy to keep any of the shepherd breeds entertained and happy. Surprised the pit isn't on the list though.
Up to a point the caucasian needs a lot of walking but as they grow older they become very chill and just lie about all day. Their "shepherding" style is just to lie amongst the sheep while they graze then defend them from predators when the need arises, they're not herders.
Pits aren’t actually as dangerous as people put them out to be . They also have tolorence like right below the golden retriever so a lot of the issues is from them classifying different dog breeds as pitbulls so people think they’re more dangerous

my dad had a tibetan mastiff and 9 other dogs as a kid in the tea estate Darjeeling in the mountains of west bengal. the tibetan mastiff was a dog that was loving to them and also kept out leopards and he occasional mountain lion. love your vids tho
A lot of comments kinda humble bragging that they have this lists number one as "oh he's such a laid back dog would never hurt a fly" it depends on how much free will a owner let's there dog have, without obsessively training them to hate people. The reality is a lot of dogs are trained to not like people, and a lot of times people will train that dog to attack on sight just so they can look oh-so-cool when the dog listens to them but attacks everyone else. Where this behaviorists comes in, is people can't control there dog once they have tried to make them a machine, or a self defense weapon. So they come to him to fix the dogs trauma from being tortured until it became the best self defense tool. When these dogs do not obey orders, they are deemed useless and they are abandoned. If your dog is so great and laid back, then good for you. You treated your dog with love and mutual respect all it's life, and treated It like a living being instead of treating it like a fashion accessory.
How many dogs do you have what you experience with dogs you can take your voice of a behavioral list and for people who don’t know anything that’s where I would go myself I’ve been with dogs since I was three years old I’ve never had a dog smaller than me until I turn 20 some people shouldn’t have dogs and more some people it doesn’t make a difference what type of dog do you have some people just have a way with recognizing a problem and working on it not every single dog can be made reliable and that’s the first lesson everybody should understand. If your dog on this list is "the kindest most chilled dog" it's because you've trained them properly, this list is for the dogs that have not been trained properly or incorrectly, any dog can be dangerous but some dogs need someone who is able to handle them and train them
@@Big_Serb can you blame the breed for attracting the particular kind of shithead that lead to bad breed rep? Pit bulls were banned in the UK, but the type of people who got them for the wrong reasons bought other muscular broad headed dogs instead, like Rottweilers and Staffies.
My ex had 3 of them total. First one was a puppy. Amazing dog. Second one was a foster to adopt. She ended up bonding with me and being aggressive towards everyone else in the household. She was rehomed. To a family with 2 small girls. Hope that turned out okay lmao.. The third one was named Meatball and she was a sweetheart. So, 2/3 of the ones I lived with were great dogs. That one that wasn't, it really wasn't safe to have her around.
The lurcher? *my lurcher chilling with half of her teeth gone* : 👁👄👁 She Is so chill but I got her at a young age so she’s used to kids , she’s never bit anyone :)) also where I live (ire) I’ve never seen a cause of lurcher dog bites most I’ve seen are ones that kinda just lazy around lol ❤
My beautiful lurcher Rocky was 17, he was put to sleep last week, it's not their fault, they are highly strung & my boy loved to kill & he got this look on his face, then he would become a big sook, Lurchers are beautiful & if you want to have a nervous breakdown you will get one.
I’ve got a Caucasian shepherd/Siberian husky mix and he is so loving and protective over the family. If anyone gives him a belly rub and food you are his best friend 😂 Great pub dog
At least in the US, the term lurcher covers a lot of different mixes. Is there a 'standard' lurcher in the UK (I assume that is where you are by the accent). I once had a Pointer/whippet mix who was energetic to say the least but wouldn't think of biting.
Lurchers in the UK are specifically sighthound crossed with terrier or herding breed dogs (there is a caveat on terriers because bull type terrier breeds are controversial among hardline lurcher people, bull breeds being bred for fighting more than ratting or anything similar, which is why most bull mix lurcher owners will say “bull lurcher” not simply “lurcher”). Sighthounds crossed with another breed of sighthound are long dogs, and any other combination is simply a mutt or sighthound mix, depending on how strong the sighthound is in the make up of the dog. Many shelters label any sighthound mix as a lurcher, which makes this entire post more disingenuous than the simple fact that lurchers are not a breed and should not be included on an “x breeds” list whether discussing how “dangerous” they are, or how easy they are to groom.

You don’t include Labradoodles in the Labrador stats, because they’re not Labradors, they’re cross breeds, and as such are less predictable. Lurchers are lurchers, if you have a sighthound cross, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it isn’t really a lurcher, especially a sighthound x sighthound because the whole point of the lurcher was to make a more intelligent hunting dog and all sighthounds are pretty dim witted…
@@jenniferrush9749 while the majority could be considered mutts by default due to them being first generation crosses it should be noted its not always the case. Due to the often illegal activities these dogs are bred for not everybody involved with them likes to talk about they're breeding programs. Some people have linebred them for numerous generations just like the cur, fiest and coon hound types and breeds from America. Others like a certain cross because surprisingly a certain stamp can be produced reasonably consistently even from multi first generation crosses if treated to some degree like a basic formula. Beddy whippet, saluki bull Grey, bull grey, collie bull grey, saluki grey, bull whippet grey, wheaten bull grey, collie grey etc. The Australians also have this with one of their favourite working crosses the bully boxer cattle dog.
Wow, I've worked with lurcher for years at a rescue centre, I own 3 and have for years along with greyhounds, I've been hospitalised twice whilst working as a groomer and at the rescue for greys and lurchers, both times was a bloody whippet, both kc registered, show champions and nasty as all hell, other bites were chihuahuas, west Highland terriers, and Yorkshire terriers. Lurchers get dumped because they bite animals, bred for hunting, that's all they know before getting dumped for eating fluffy. So I'm gonna have to say I'm sorry but lurchers have been wrongly accused on this video. Killing the neighbours cat doesn't make them a bad dog it makes them a hunting dog and are one of the most abused dogs ever, like the greyhound. if these dogs are not aggressive whilst in rescue kennels then they're not bad dogs and I really doubt his statistics. I'm speaking from 20 years of working with the rescue and at the groomers
We own a Tibetan mastiff, and it is the most gentle, loving dog. All dogs are a reflection of their owners. If you have a very poor owner, who doesn’t understand the dog, then you’ll have bad behavior in your dogs.
I'm sure all those golden "mixes" that are 90% shitbull have nothing to do with it. Also, a simple googling of 2022 dog bite statistics shows that the breed everyone expects is leading the charts by a landslide.
That may also be because they are one of the most abundant breeds and there are just way more of them than most other dogs, especially around families with annoying kids
They might actually be among the least dangerous. Once known as "Nurse dogs" for their gentleness, they got a bad reputation because of horrible owners and illegal dogfighting. People get them because they look mean, then they abuse and mistreat them so that they attack everything in sight.

@@sheepboy32785 the "nanny dog" is a fable. They were originally bred to bait bears and bulls. They were bred to not let go of prey at the expense of their own life, couple that with their high pain tolerance and you have a small killing machine... Not to mention any sign of relenting and a pitbull would get shot as that would be seen as an undesirable trait in both of their professions as hunters and pit fighters. They are not your average family dog...
True, I've had experience with the American Akita, he had an extremely high prey drive and was very aloof and independent breed.. though loved you in his own way.. My Caucasian is like a sweet little bear cub right now.. he sticks to me like glue.. very loving and affectionate.
In North America the term “canine behaviourist” is typically held by people with an education, however it is not a protected term. Trying to look for any certifications Will has acquired has been elusive.
