4:30 the plane has a hook and there is a "string" that the hook needs to catch and it "grabs" the plane so it can't go over the aircraft carrier; there i actually three strings incase they over/under shoot the string, but before pilots are allowed to land on an aircraft carrier they need to land on a regular runway which the three strings are on, they must be able to consecutively get the desired sting (i think its the second string) to be allowed to land a plane on an aircraft carrier.

Tha air craft carrier landing is pretty safe, when the plane gets on the runway, it's wheels get attached to an elastic rope which helps in stopping it in addition to brakes, and even if you couldn't make it, you'll land just in front of the aircraft carrier
