When you have them not helping clean most of there life they believe that is not there responsibility.. These old people who live like this is because they were used to having there mom clean up after them or got their pet friends they use a slave or their mentally ill family member . Just because they old doesn't mean they were good people .. You old and living like that ? You were use to having a laid back job where you spent most of your time in a clean building while someone cleaned your house , or you never cleaned it and just pick up and relocate, Just like rich people do with there furniture, where if it has a stain on it or something and don't want to clean it or hire a nosey maid to they throw it out or sell it to a company that buys used furniture and have someone else clean it. They even do that with their walls and carpet. Just paint over it or rip up the carpet and put another one down wasting resources

Breaks my heart for the depressed people. I have been there, and sometimes... You just don't want to care anymore, then you get overwhelmed, tired and just... Don't want to even breathe sometimes. 😔 Anyone who sees this, and feels that way. You aren't alone..

I just posted a comment detailing my experience and you're right. You try to do something about it and get overwhelmed and burnt out. Then you feel bad about it and instead of listening and understanding your struggles, people make fun of you, call you a bunch of names and say a bunch of things that aren't true. The people who actually care and want to help become overwhelmed and freaked out and don't understand, and they leave.
@CynicalEmpath
@CynicalEmpath Год назад
@@thomasbermea347 so true. When you are broken and open up to people, finally, they get overwhelmed and don't want to deal with it. They think it's an excuse. They think it's as easy as A B C. It's not. And when we aren't able to meet the standards they set immediately they are quick to quit. They think we don't care. Problem is, we got where we are by caring too much. This world is the hardest on the most sensitive souls. I hurt for people I don't even know, because, as you know, when you've been broken and beaten down, it's not as easy as people make it seem. 😣

My sisters and I grew up in a house with my mother like these until my dad took custody of 2 of us in our teens. My dad never fully believed our stories until about 5-7 years later. Mom and youngest sister came to stay with us for a month and he got to actually see her in action. By the time they left, the bedroom with attached bath they stayed in was absolutely disgusting. My dad actually apologized to us for not believing us. My heart goes out to those kids who have to live like this because of their parents choices. Yes most of this is mental illness, but knowing you have a problem and not doing anything about it, is a choice.

Lucy is a real life angel I think hoarding is genuinely one of the more fascinating mental illnesses. Some people have called me a boarder-line hoarder. I become physically and mentally attached, either to the object, the value of the object, or if it is a gift, i become attached to the thought that was put in and have the hardest time getting rid of it, even if i don't/cant use it. Such as pajamas I got from an aunt that usually didn't even usually acknowledge me, the top made me so incredibly itchy, but I would wear it when she was around just to show her (in my own way) I loved and appreciated her and the thought she put into my gifts. That's the only thing that would explain that type of behavior. People with OCD can be completely out of control in all areas but their illness focuses on one thing. Now that I think about it this person probably could live in that field as long as they kept the newspapers in place. So very sad. We all know what it's like to have a sink full of dishes and have it drive us crazy until we take care of it I can't imagine living like that.

I owned a cleaning business years ago and we often got calls from relatives asking for us to clean a "hoarding" situation. After doing alot of these clean ups, and talking to the actual resident of the home, sometimes you realize they are actually addicted to certain behaviours (like urinating in bottles or defacating in bowls, pans,drawers..anything other than a toilet). Much of it is caused by trauma. Its very sad 😔

A personal story: This one hits pretty hard. I've helped to care for my elderly parents with health problems, my mom never threw anything away, always kept everything and my dad's a junker. His friends and neighbors always give him everything when they move or get rid of things. He never says no, and always says "someone can use it, better than throwing it away", and while he HAS been able to help people with some things people gave him, with his health problems, it became overwhelming for him. Between my parents' health issues and trying to not let my parents' clutter take over to the point of becoming like one of those houses, I've sacrificed a huge chunk of my life and haven't taken care of myself physically or mentally so it dragged me into depression, so it's an ongoing battle between me, the house and my mental health. As long as I'm trying, I keep thinking "small wins are still wins". People don't understand and make fun of us sometimes, some even laughing and saying it's a "crack house", which yes is offensive and hurts, but ignorant people who have no interest in understanding will say anything to make fun of others. Compassion is what's needed and being willing to listen and understand what people are going through instead of calling people names or speculating.

I used to help my mom rent mobile homes. In October of 2020, a 600 lb lady and her three kids lived in our trialer park. We rented to her because we trusted a friend. FYI, NEVER do that! Her boyfriend died a year before and caused her mental health to go downhill. He died in that trailer and she didn't call anybody to help her get him out of the house. He sat there for 2 weeks before her neighbor friend helped get him out and cremated. The body made a mess and she never cleaned it up. The kids had to see that! Even before all that, she was not a clean person. Then she stopped paying rent during the pandemic. She was living with her parents in the next town with the kids, while she said she still lived in the mobile home. She even claimed that she had renter rights and couldn't pay because of COVID. That was true so it made it impossible to evict her. Court was delayed by 6-8 months because the judges kept getting sick or dying from COVID. Finally after a year we were able to get the mobile home back. When my dad walked in, he gagged sooo bad. He never does that! My mom was appalled. The next week, we gathered all the cleaning supplies we needed, trash bags, and full body paint suits to act as a hazmat suit, shoe coverings, and crawled in there and cleaned up the place. There was trash up to your knees, rotten groceries in the kitchen on the floor, trash in the freezer, mice and roaches everywhere, bodily fluids on every bed sheet scattered throughout the house and so much more. The mattresses were covered in pee and period blood. The children wet the bed every night and the all slept in the same bed because of the trash. The wet laundry on the floor was next to the back door which was leaking and she never told us about it. It made the clothes to stick and melt to the floor along with the dyes that stained the floor. Both toilets overflowed and caved into the particle board of the trialer. Her 600lbs butt broke both toilets. I think they resorted to peeing in the vent ducts on the floor. There was a hole poked in the bottom of one 🤮. WORST OF ALL.... we walked in there and her boyfriends ashes were still on the kitchen table!! Who does that!! She abandoned everything including his ashes! We returned them to his family. They were so thankful. In the end it took a team of 3 people (I was one of them) a month to clean it, two dumpsters and 4 truck bed loads later. It was awful. I can't even do my dishes without being grossed out! One child was giving custody to a family friend and the other 2 to their grandparents. The mom was living with her parents for a while, but I think the mom is now living in a homeless shelter an hour away from that trailer park. But that was a year ago idk where she is now. I just hope the kids are in a better place then that. If you made it this far, thanks for reading it! ❤️

I feel for you. Why would a person treat those kids that way? I know people that had their kids taken away from them because they had their water bill cut off but kids were clean and house was spotless. They also had the money coming in two days to get their water turned on. Friends gave them gallons of water to drink, kids took baths at friends and so on. Yet the dhs workers let those kids go to their father who admitted murdering someone to the cops but no body. Yet dhs wasn’t called on that woman who left those kids stay in that filth and death. Teachers and neighbors had to have smelt that. And that female I told you about has a clean three bedroom, payed for house and car and dhs gives those kids back to a admitted to murder father.

I confess to being a borderline hoarder. I didn't have lots of actual rubbish lying around, but just lots of stuff. I lost my husband in 2019, struggled during the pandemic (living alone, but having to work in person) and I slipped down the stairs over some books and broke my ankle -- it snapped like a twig and my foot was at right angles to my leg. My mum owns the house and she went ballistic :D. My friends really helped, but as well as having a baaaad injury (I still walk with a stick 21 months on) I got well and truly busted on the house. I'm autistic and dyspraxic. The fatigue of working during covid was enough to push me over the edge, and of course lockdown during the winter was pretty bleak. I can't begin to express my gratitude to my friends and my mum, who turned 70 in 2020. I got a large life insurance payment from my husband and that has helped pay for therapy. If you're in this situation: GET HELP. Yes, it can feel shameful. Yes, it might hurt to go through it. But you come out the other side and you feel better with more space. (Big useful tip: get a powdered active charcoal toilet cleaner. It makes so much difference in ten minutes.) Animals and kids suffer at the hands of people enough. Don't make it worse. I'd love a cat or dog but I still struggle with my own health, so it would be a bad idea.

A few years ago I tried to clean a hoarder's house. I got the kitchen, one bedroom, and the living room. Even the backyard was a mess, but the worst was the garage. It was packed with all of his parents stuff, and then his own overflow of more than sixty years. It was a solid mess that you couldn't even pull much out. Eventually, no matter how slowly I went, he couldn't handle anymore cleaning. I was meant to return but he kept gambling and lost the house. Last time I was in the neighborhood it looked so nice i was depressed! He was a nice man, but he had major mental problems we were unable to address. I hope his doggie was okay 😢

I adopted a cat from a cat hoarding situation. Over 100 alive, and who knows how many dead. She was so skinny and shy.she has blossomed into her full personality. Hoarding is a mental illness. They don't actually realize they are hoarders. I can't imagine the situation or squalor that my cat lived in. She is so happy now, full of personality and full of life. There is help for hoarders. Unfortunately, a bit of tough love helps them understand the severity of the situation. I have empathy for those unable to cope with a past trauma that often leads to hoarding. I wish only for them to get the help they need and help for the animals as well.

I can relate to some of these stories. I suffer with depression and I am a hoarder. I had a home that was too much for me because the stuff I had. It wasn't filthy and smelly it was just extremely cluttered which made me feel even worse. I was ashamed to ask for help because of the embarrassment of letting people see it. Unfortunately I lost my home due to financial circumstances and I lost most of my belongings. Now I have pretty much nothing including a place to call home. I do know if I have the chance of a home then I will never let it get messy again.

I think the best thing about this video Be Amazed is that you said that hoarding is a mental health problem, sometimes people don't understand that 😕 This was a fantastic video in that you also featured those who help too 💖 My father was a bit of a hoarder, several rooms in his place were very bad and the same with the sheds. He did however hoard cleaning items too, over thirty packs of floor wipes when he'd never cleaned the floor in his life. Our relationship was incredibly toxic and I was too ill anyway to try help by the end, I have carers myself but we still tried again after the OT asked us. I've been catching Hoarders on RU-vid and it's been an incredible insight, more and more behaviours often found with hoarders now made sense. I also realise that he had multiple different things he would hoard, plastic boxes! Then more boxes to store the boxes. So many multiples of the same items. Then I got locked out by the Executor and that was that. I do the opposite myself, I extreme sort, file and tidy or paint stuff, that's my coping mechanism. At least I know where everything is 🤣

The problem I have with this video is that, yes, he does say that hoarding is a mental health problem. Because of that, these people shouldn't be shamed, it's not going to help. Yet the rest of the video is full of gifs of disgustedness, and virtually no more compassion.

I'm on the border of being a hoarder (pun actually not intended), my problems are - to name a few - that I'm severely depressed, a recovering alcoholic, and *I actually can't stand how icky it is*. In other words; people doesn't want to live like that, it's just a downward spiral, until one just don't give a crap anymore; what's another little thing going to do to all the clutter? Etc. When I have been away from home and come back, I simply can't believe how it looks, even if it right now is pretty okay. Please don't hate on those people! Everyone has a back story.
@chrisla2736

Same here. I am making slow attempts to "purge" ( get rid of all things I don't use) it feels so good when I do. Giving away the clutter, makes me feel a bit of ambition. To me, my house is trashed, but to others, doesnt look even close to what these other peoples homes. I have 9 cats, and take care of 2 more that live in the shed. And a dog, but they are all healthy, well fed, and happy. Lol no I don't hoard animals . I haven't vacuumed in what seems like forever., there is dust everywhere, but my bathroom and kitchen are clean. I take it one day at a time. When I feel good, I clean, just as much as I can bare. Then remove some clutter. So I can clean some more. Being alone, and disabled makes it a task and a half.

I feel for you. I was severely depressed for years and a kind of hoarder too. Just opening a box to try and get rid of something triggered anxiety crises. I suppose these objects were the only stable things in a life that was spiralling down. I hated that mess, just like you. The Mary Kondo method worked for me, except I had to do it very slowly, month after month. It took about a year to empty my tiny appartment, another year to arrange it while still throwing things out. I don’t cling to things anymore. I feel happy now when I throw away broken items. I only buy a few things now, and only things I like. My next step will be to finish organising and decorating. I did some today and it’s not even stressful anymore. I’m confident you will find a way that works for you too. It’s going to take some time, just like healing from depression, but you’ll eventually succeed.

Same here. I know the house is messy, and I hate it. But I have Severe Anxiety & Depression, in addition to physical issues with my back, knees, and left shoulder. I desperately want to have a clean house, but at the same time it's so hard to have the mental drive and physical ability to do so. There's a huge difference between actual hoarders who 'collect' everything in sight and think there is nothing wrong with how bad their homes are (who almost always have undiagnosed and/or untreated mental disorders) and those who have physical disabilities and/or depression who know it's bad, want to do something about it, but just can't do so on their own without help. Even so, my house could be called clean compared to the ones on this video. That people can get to such a bad state without anyone else noticing and able to help them out is horrifying.

I dated a woman once, who I thought seemed to have the characteristics of a hoarder, but nothing like this. I don't think her place was anything like a hygienic hazard, the bathroom was cluttered, but not full of shit or mold everywhere. But her room was so piled with crap that she essentially carved trails from door to bed to closet. It was bad though. I dated another woman, some ten years later, who had a similar but lesser problem. Lots of crap everywhere, furniture you couldn't sit on from piles of stuff, but also not so bad that I would've called it unsafe unless a fire broke out or whatever. I tried to help the latter with it. I was happy to, I loved her and I was more than glad to clean with her. But she had gotten overwhelmed; and psychology was definitely part of it. I remember we cleared out a big portion of her living room, I thought it would be happy for us, but she had a huge panic attack and self-defeating spell. I feel for anyone who suffers in a way that these things get out of control. I don't believe laziness or indifference is the problem. It's deeper than that.

I thought i might share my experience. I was a hoarder myself. It really is a life full of crap, depression and isolation. It always starts with some little dirt. Som trash you think "i will bring that out tomorrow." Soon you realize: Youre always saying that. And the trash is already scattered on your desk and floor. What happens next? Right. "I will do that tomorrow." You just cannot bring yourself up to do something about it. You start to hate yourself. You stop inviting people, making friends, because friends are a possibility for someone to see this. Day by day, it will get worse and worse. Not even my parents knew about this, until one day they had to drive me to the hospital because of an infection i got. So i was kinda forced to tell them, altough i really didnt want to. The shock was great and i felt no longer human anymore in front of my own parents. Sure, they helped me. For now, its clean again. But even although they helped. No one ever asked me: Why? People think, cleaning that stuff and renovating fixes those problems. But it wont. Years of isolation made an heavy introvert out of me, and im struggling to keep my home clean. I realize the same habits repeating again. I always thought about the many different reasons it could have. Maybe i have some mental health problems. Maybe im just lazy. Maybe i have that thinking of "If no one else cares, why should i?" Fixing a problem like this is not easy. And i know, how quick humanity is to judge the hoarders instead of offering some help, not in terms of cleaning, but also mental health. My parents just said "Hes given up" and thats it for them. No questions asked, no concerns raised. Sadly, humanity is quick to judge. Please dont just say "Those hoarders are dirty people, they should just clean!" Its not as easy. We are trying. We are fighting. But we are always loosing that fight.

Hoarding is such a mental health problem and once you get caught in it’s trap you find it so hard to get out. You can be a clean hoarder too, do the cleaning you need to keep the place sanitary but still have piles of unsourced items that have some irrational meaning to the person who it belongs to. The hardest thing in any hoarding situation is that no one usually knows how bad it is and the person shuts everyone out knowing they don’t want to be seen living in this condition. They mostly just need help and support and linking to services that can continue to check in on them and keep them healthy.
