There's a legitimate reason for the play at 5:17. His team was on defense and down 2 with 0.4 seconds left. They were going to lose pretty much no matter what. But Green tried a gambit that, if it had paid off, would have given his team a small chance. In this situation, the best strategy for the shooter is to try to miss the free throw. The clock runs as soon as anyone touches the ball, so the trailing team wouldn't have enough time to either hurl the ball across the court or call a timeout to advance the ball and still get a shot off. The shooter did miss the shot, just like he was supposed to. So on the other side, *_the best strategy for the trailing team is for the shooter to MAKE the free throw._* Green was not confused as to where his own basket was; he was trying to goaltend to make sure the ball went in! The idea is this. If it counts as one point, then it's still a one possession game. No time would run off the clock for this violation, and his team could call a timeout and advance the ball to get a three-point attempt with the full 0.4 on the clock. Still extremely unlikely to win in that situation, but it gives the best chance among all available options. I'm not sure what the rules are in the league he was playing in, but after reading the rulebook it looks to me like this play is valid in the NBA, although I could be misreading it. In Green's case, it unfortunately didn't matter, because he did not quite get there in time for a goaltend. So it counted as two points instead and put the game out of reach. And since it didn't work, people don't really think about it, so instead everyone just thinks he's an idiot.
