I boxed in the Texas area and visited lots of Mexican gyms and this is what they taught. And I also learned a very important lesson in my first fight. If someone is blocking or dodging your punches they're not hitting you! This is how Henry Armstrong, and to some degree Marciano and Joe Frazier fought, perpetual motion.. I'm not active any more but I still workout and that's how I train myself, but its not being taught at all in our gym. Some of the kids look at me like I'm from another planet, they've never seen training like that, but its not being taught, at least not around here. Good video!
Great points. A good offense IS a good defense. Sometimes boxers try to get too cute and impress by slipping and moving. To a well trained fighter, you’re only just egging him on by doing that. It takes more effort sometimes to slip and move than it does your opponent to swing and miss.
You explained exactly what I love so much about the swarming style of Armstrong, Marciano, and Frazier. They were like freight trains, nonstop punching, and constant pressure. Couple that in with their crouched positions and head movement (especially Frazier), it makes for a brutal, but exceptionally exciting fight. I've been hitting the bag, jump rope, running, etc. and I've had my fair share of street fights as a stupid youngster, but I'm making my first appearance at an actual boxing gym next week. I'm obviously too old to actually fight professionally at 32 years old, but I really want to get into fighting shape for the health benefits, and the self defense aspect is also a plus. I'm planning to do some sparring eventually, and I already know I'm gonna get lit up my first few times, but I'm not gonna give up. This is how I hit the bag at home. I keep punching until my arms just physically can't punch anymore. Although, sometimes I just wail on the bag full force to focus on power. I bought an ax to start chopping wood too.
@@MZ-zu7wkunless your body is deteriorating 32 is not too late. Will you be the next best boxer? Probably not. Some people have been doing this since they were kids. But if you mean make money in it as “professional” then it falls on your skill and your dedication. 32 is a fine age
I boxed as an amateur had 10 fights and I could technically put myself at a high level. But I can confirm this advice through round 1 and 2 I would fight in burst's and dominate but then I could feel myself fade and no matter how good I was technically, I would find myself in a fight/slog which in turn undid all the tidy dominating work I did prior. I have actually lost bout's and been stopped in rounds 3 as someone has kept busy. So this is honest work and honest advice it's this sort of work which is not pretty which separates fighters and wins bouts. Respect sir I've subbed
This video is all wrong bro. The breaks he talking about fighters take is because they are looking to be on defense. This man was hitting the bag and never had his hands up to his chin once
How have i not come across your channel before?...I'm now a subscriber....good stuff.....stamina ...cardio is king...as well knowing how to throw punches in bunches.
Floyd and Foreman were perfect to watch I seen Floyd go 40 minutes on the bag and didn't stop throwing punches. Foreman did the same thing just at his pace with alot more power intended in his punches.
This man is right on. Continual motion is huge. It builds endurance and improves your breathing when sparring. Bad habits are created on the heavy bag when you throw a few combos then move left then right then repeat.
This was a good video. Really brought me some useful knowledge for when I go into the boxing club this week. I AIN"T STOPPING FOR BREAKS ON THE BAG NOW BABY!
I like the theory of training to never quit, however, if you start getting hit, you're cardio will drain and the hands will start falling, so train to never quit but also practice on defense and not getting hit, trust me, it will slow you down!!
Of course man. Its just a specific mentality and drill for the heavybag and stamina id say. I still like to move my feet and work imagine their throwing back. But ima try this out aswell
Thank You Coach! This is some of the most prolific instruction on RU-vid to date. I wish everybody nothing but the utmost success. Train hard & fight even harder! ✊🏽
I'm 66 and I try to do exactly what you're doing. I do a continual 20 minutes of punches without a break. It's several thousand punches in 20 minutes. My heart rate monitor shows it's a zone 4 workout.
Keep your hands up Couch! Thanks for suggestion. I incorporated these non-stop punching in my training. I like the results, but I just begun, so will see down the road.

True, i have the basics down but if I just had endless stamina to throw nonstop and keep moving then i could take on and have a chance at defeating elite fighters! its just that damn cardio! I am fast and strong enough, I just run out of steam too fast. and yeah a bit more body conditioning to take shots if a plus too but if i can move and throw all the time I don't need to worry about that.
perfect form off training for stamina train how you fight you cant train 100percent everyday or you will burn out it’s like runners they don’t run everyday to beat there last record.stamina training is slow and repetitive which builds cardio if u want to be fast snappy and hard is change training to Hiit and sprints . thanks fo the vid coach no way is the right way and no way is the wrong way you gotta get there and just do it
My man! Volume and pace weaponized is how I train for Muay Thai, and I expect to fight the same way in a ring. Even if my opponent comes 150mph, I'm going to endure that, weather the storm, and drop continuous punches at a rate that will exhaust them.
Thats very true. true knowledge. when you hit that bag you should be giving 100 percent. not for every round but alot of rounds and hit hard with technique and finish strong last 10 seconds evrytime. a round timer is essential.
I’d say 90 percent true. Only critique would be is hands up.. not too lax.. don’t get caught with a big shot by over punching. Nonetheless absolutely right. Most fighters can’t take constant pressure. As the saying goes only the strong survive. Great work. Motivation. Indeed. ✌🏾
Great video coach and thank you! Cheers all the way from Miguel Cotto Boxing Gym Caguas, Puerto Rico! Words of Wisdom. Thanks again Coach! God Bless You!
@@coachcarl757_fitness you and another brother from U.S am going to tune in to for my health, All I saw was outstanding, great teaching , well be watching 👍👍👍👍
I also think the problem is that too many amateur boxers base their pace on pro boxers, rather than olympic boxers.... the tempo is a total different world
There are too many people in the gym nowadays taking up space because some of them are there to socialize and yap. All I do is say wassup to the owner and dudes I'm cool with, and then I'm going right to work. I'll talk when I'm done and cooling down.
I used to box i do Muay Thai and MMA now, I’m venturing more into mma and mma rounds can be up to 5 minutes so I set the timer to 10 minutes around. It sounds long but in the grand scheme of things a lot of people don’t train that way. It’s better to have too much energy than not enough!
Throwing that many punches will tire you out as well. It's human nature. However the objective is to hopefully tire your opponent out b4 u get tired. Hoping the opponent not training as hard as you. Or conditioning not on your level. I see it with Mexican fighters all the time. From Round 1 to Round 12 they are busy, unless one of them gets clipped. Great video 👍🏾
Thank you for that OG. I am definitely one of those guys who will throw a set or two of combos then step back and disengage for a couple seconds. I will try this constant pressure and see if I have the gas for it.
See so many boxers gas out because they are lazy in training. People forget a fight is non stop. After you have thrown a combination you dont get a break in a fight.
Controversial opinion, but I really respect your philosophy on stamina in combat sports,…specifically boxing. Love how you don’t telegraph punches either!
Good video but realistically nobody is gonna sit there and left u tee off of them like that . My coach always told me move around use your stick w distance while hitting heavy bag.
These days I try to make myself vomit in a short time. Running a long distance at a comfty pace makes no sense to me. My fights would be 3 times 2 minutes. So all I gave to do is give it my all in 3 times 2 minutes
