My father was an Aussie Vietnam Veteran and was about a week from rotating out. On his last patrol a guy who had been in country for less than a week stepped on a toe popper and lost most of his left foot. Dad always said he would rather be in a firefight than deal with Vietnamese man traps.

There was a book written by a Vietnamese general during the middle ages when China attempted to invade and conquer them. They used similar traps then and even sank a large portion of the imperial Chinese navy using hidden bamboo spikes on a beach where the ships attempted to land. The book describes how to make these traps and how best to use them. It was still in circulation when the war was going on.

I know there are many reasons leading to a war but this war is kinda pointless. No one benefit. So please keep this world peaceful and don't let wars happen. Vietnam has fought against China after 1000 years of invasion, fought agains the French army, the US invaders and then the Chinese invaders after Americans left. The people in the military came from a poor background, mostly farmers, or get sent to do hard labour for the French or the US. They never got proper training. I am surprised of how they pulled it together to current day. They were called: "Quân Đội Nhân Dân Việt Nam", which means the army were from the farmers, I mean people, ain't any specialised personnels whose got training for thousands of dollars. Thank you for the people that fell down to make Vietnam an independent country like today.

They also made mines against helicopters. A crude four blade propeller made in... bambu, of course, was set in a probable landing zone and attached to a hand grenade ring by a wire. When approaching the ground to land, the downwash of the helicopter main rotor would spin the bambu propeller connected to the grenade, and after a few turns the propeller shaft would spool up the attached wire, pulling the ring and detonating the grenade, hitting the helicopter underside where in a UH-1 the fuel tank was located. I must agree that's quite imaginative indeed!

The US government lost politically, that’s the only loss. Gen Giáp has said the North was days away from negotiations when Nixon stopped operation Linebacker 1 and 2. There's another version of the door trap you didn't mention. This one instead of punji sticks it used the two-step viper. The way my grandfather told me is they would either nail or tie the two step to the top of the doorway that way when a US soldier would open it it would hit the snake angering them and they would immediately start trying to bite the US soldier. My grandfather told me about this as he encountered it on two separate occasions while he was in Vietnam. I found that out after I asked him why he was afraid and cautious to walk through his own door one day. Suffice to say I was a little disturbed by the answer but not surprised.
