Most of my fish are DEAD because of this !!

Unfortunately this isn't a video I ever wanted to film, however, most of my fish are dead because I added Tangs. I have lost 8 fish out of my 12. I assume it all started when I added 3 new Tangs to the tank that I got from a tank breakdown. Well, after 2 and half months they got either Brooklynella or Marine Velvet. Not sure which. The remaining fish and thankfully one of them is Piney, my Porcupine Puffer are just coming out of the Copper treatment in the QT. The main tank will remain fallow until it hits 76 days.
If you would like to help with the restocking just use the 'Super Thanks' and I would love you forever 😁

A painful but outstanding video. Not because of what happened, but because of how you handled it and your ownership of the incident. This is one of the most important kinds of video's to have on a channel, as they set realistic expectations. Sorry for your losses. May of us have been there, it's painful.

Hi, thank you so much for your kind words ❤️ I guess many of us like myself think it will never happen to them, but just as I get the larger tank and have the stocking level where I want it, BAM. It happens! I've been lucky up to now, but after that massive loss, I'm not going to take any more chances. I'm always going to QT from now onwards. I've always said I would show and share the good, bad, and the Drama !! Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

Haha, yes I guess you're right, although in my mind when I set the channel up it was more about leaving the RODI unit on and flooding the floor, or a fish deciding it doesn't like water any more and wants to try it's hand at being amphibious or maybe the skimmer cup overflowing etc etc !! 🤣🤣 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

Hello, thank you. Yes, it sure is discouraging and quite upsetting, too. I'm not going to give up, but I can understand people who do, especially when they lose all their fish. I had 5 left, although now down to 3 as one of the yellow wrasse jumped out the QT and I think Piney (Porcupine Puffer) has eaten the cleaner wrasse as I can't find him anywhere now. I'm not surprised as the cleaner wrasse used to piss Piney off, and I had him in the sump for ages. Now being in a 100 litre QT together, he must have finally had enough of him! Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

Hello, sorry to hear you had similar problems, even down to getting copper. OMG, it is heartbreaking, but as you say, quarantine all the way, and I'm going to be keeping some Copper and Prazipro in the cupboard at all times from now on. I'm so pleased your tank is thriving now 😀 I've still got another 40-50 days of fallow in the DT. I may extend the 76-day fallow period to 84 or even 90. Will see. Oh, thank you. Sorry for your lost. After several incidents, my son only buys his fish from a local place that QTs their stock before they sell them. He also uses a place on line that QTs and trains copper bands to eat pellets/frozen. I'm the variable in the family when I stop at some random Petco or LFS and end up buying something interesting!😅 We have a 35W UV on a Red Sea 425XL(@120total). We started keeping reef meds in the house after the same out of stock nightmare.(reef flux, chemi-clean , cipro, iodine, hydrogen peroxide, copper etc) We're also looking at installing ozone as a part time treatment. Good luck on your rebuild!

Maybe it's time to start quarantining before adding fish to the main tank. Sorry to hear your going through this. I've been there. It's tough. Follow the 80 - 20 quarantine method and you will drastically reduce these types of problems. I use an all in one 10 Gallon tank. Works great

Sorry to hear this , not had a marine tank for 20 years but I do remember the only time I ever had any trouble with disease was when I introduced a bristle tooth tang the yellow eye one. Thanks John, oh that's great to hear you're starting back up again. I bet you've noticed quite a difference in some of the equipment from when you had a Marine tank before? Yeah, I think you're right about tangs being a ticking time bomb!! Lol. I'm not sure yet if it's put me off getting anymore tangs as I do love them. Will see. Now I'm going to QT any new fish myself and keep copper and Prazipro in the cupboard at all times, maybe one day I will try again with a couple of tangs. Thank you for your kind words and good luck with your new Marine tank and journey. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

Man, that sounds so horrible and heart breaking to go through. Piney is an absolute belter of a fish, hopefully he’s okay! I’m new to reef keeping, currently cycling my very first tank, and watching this has reminded me why it took me years to pull the trigger, I really hope I don’t experience something like this; I really feel for you mate. Chin up, we live and learn. I’m glad I’ve already got a QT set up in place next to my display tank, but like you said… I wouldn’t be QT-ing for nearly 3 months, so would it have even helped?? Do you have an inclination of anything else that changed which might have triggered it?

Hey, thank you. Yeah, it was heartbreaking due to the length of time I had some of those fish. Thanks, Piney is absolutely fine, and he's a great character not only in the tank but on the channel, too!! Welcome to reef keeping by the way 😀 Just take your time with things, and I wish you all the best of luck in the Salty world. You're already off to the best start with having QT from the beginning. I'm pleased to hear you've already sorted a QT, but yeah, I'm still not 100% sure it would've helped in my situation, but QTing going forward anyway. Been there done that, after adding a fish from an LFS without Qt it, didn’t realise at that time that LFS run only therapeutic levels of copper to suppress ich/velvet rather than treat & TMC do they same where I was always made to believe they was QT’d, stripped tank down, left fallow for 105 days , copper Qt the fish over a slow period to start for 4weeks , then parazi, fresh water dipped & returned & touch wood all been good, since then I’ve also done the tank transfer on some wrasse & that seems to have worked too, upgrading soon so the qt tanks will be set back up. Shame we had to learn the hard way being live stock & not just an product sold .

I’m new to saltwater fish, and had my nano tank setup for a few weeks, everything was going well and I finally added my fish that i ordered online. Within 3 days both my clowns died and by the next day the gramma was dead as well. @@ReefDrama 6 weeks is best. The lifecycle of white spot is actually if I remember correctly 72 days if you have sand and fish. 45 days or 6 weeks is best protocol with bare bottom because of the lifecycle without sand is about a month but if white spot or Velvet is in the filter media, it can hatch there. You stated that " there was no point taking the fish out and placing them into the QT as you didn't have copper at this point" i understand as you stated, that you are not a disease expert or to that effect but, Never forget fresh water dips with temp and SG to match your Dt and getting them away from the source where the disease is rampant and into your QT. This not only buys you time to treat , but also could save you more fish deaths. Again, I know how heartbreaking this is. Keep reefing my friend.😊

Hi Sharon, Thank you so much for your kind words and for the advice. Yes, you're right, I probably should have put the fish through a freshwater dip and then into the unmedicated QT. Was just so frustrating not being able to get hold of the Copper. Won't be making that mistake again!! As you say a lot of reef keepers have had the same unfortunate issues, and we learn by them. Was absolutely gutted to lose the Purple Tang, considering that was really the only Tang I wanted and only got the other 2 because they were all together in the previous owners tank. I will indeed keep reefing, and hopefully, you will see on future videos the fish back in the tank that survived, plus some new ones. Obviously, the new ones will be going through a QT procedure 😀 Thank you for supporting my channel 😀

Recently i had lost my whole tank due to velvet including 10 baby clowmfish , my 3 years old percula clownfish pairs , one bicolour angel, one coral beauty angel except foxface rabbitfish which i treated with chloquine phosphate Velvet probably came from two new addition either those angels or those baby coownfish batch . I am totally devastated. Fishes are dead after investing so much money in the recent new tank build up and all the euipments. I am more worried about adding new fish. I have installed an oversized Uv. But i do not run follow period. Treating the foxface 1 week with chloquine phosphate its again in display tank. Don't even know if the velvet is still there or not I also misunderstood velvet as ich first . When i realised i didn't even get time to start medicating my 3 years old Clownfish pairs ( they were my first saltwater fishes) ..also here tank temp is very warm around 29-31°C ( 84-89°F).. warmer the temp, faster the velvet proliferation probably) the night i realised i was dealing with velvet probably I thought i would traat those 3 years old clowns after coming home from office..but when i returned those clowns were dead...

Oh brother, yup, I feel your pain 😞 I was devastated when my 9.5 year old clowns died and then to lose the others in such quick succession. This hobby is an expensive one, but it's not even about the money for me, it's losing a pet that you've cared for for so long. My Puffer is like a bloody puppy at times, and I can't imagine how upset I would have been if I had lost him too. The tangs (for the time I had them), Foxface, and Clownfish were especially dear to me, and it was very hard losing them. You are probably doing better than me with that UV. It's something I will have to look into. I think the temperatures your tank is at would mean the fallow period would have been shorter. Fingers crossed, it doesn't come back. I was the same, thought it was Ick and treated for that, but then seemed to turn into Marine Velvet or Brooklynella (still not sure). It all happened so fast as with yourself. If I had been able to get some copper quicker, then I may have saved a few more. The main thing is don't give up, keep going and we learn by our mistakes. Thanks for spending the time writing this comment to me and for supporting my channel 😀

It is a heartbreaking video. Tangs were in there for 2.5months Before you had symptoms of velvet? Did you introduce anything in that time interval? Velvet hits hard! It wouldn't let you have that 2 months at all. Their life cycles are 28 days. This is probably a new velvet strain or something.

@@ReefDrama that's why it's incredibly weird. Velvet incubation period is much shorter than 2.5months. it very virulent I don't think it'd stay on the fish dominantly. It must be something else within the two weeks of the outbreak. I don't think the tang gang was the problem. They might be the canary in the mine.

Long story short, take it from a man that’s been through what’s happened to you and more, diligence, attention to detail and precaution is the only way forward, you would be right when you say fish do not always outwardly show signs of disease or parasites, most tangs in my experience carry white spot think the full story of white is I think still unknown, I did as you were suggesting and put my new tang arrivals into a qt tank and just observed, this is the first step of my procedure, I settle them down after tank transfer and travel for a minimum of 2 weeks before going to the next step, in this period most tangs I break out in white spot through stress, I treat new fish with white spot straight away in qt, with plenty of aeration and begin the process of reaching 0.5 with cupramine over 7 days the 24/48 jump from 0.25 to 0.5 is too fast and tends to stress the fish, I make it clear that EVERY fish that I receive gets copper treatment for 14 days at 0.5 then gets a further 2 weeks observation following this, let’s not rule out that you may have had white spot in your tank previously before the tangs were introduced, your fish are hardy to it but new stressed arrivals would have been easy pickings, you’ll need to run your tank fallow for 72 days and treat all the other fish
@ReefDrama
@ReefDrama 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, I'm sure white spot probably was already in the tank, but as you say, the other fish were already hardy to it. Still, 2.5 months in the tank is quite a long time for no signs of disease or parasites showing, and then suddenly, the Sailfin is covered. I guess this is the unfortunate issues of having a Marine tank and occasionally working away and leaving it for a couple of days. Thanks for sharing your QT procedure, and yes, I'm leaving my DT fallow for at least 76 days, maybe more. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

I had a wipeout in my 180. Literally the last fish out of medicated qt spread a mystery disease that killed one fish a day until they all died. Fyi you didn't have brook. It's not treated with copper. I use chloroquine phosphate because it treats all 3. There is a great tank on the other side of this. I know because I did. One more thing, if you have a fish doing bad in qt don't talk yourself into the idea that it's stressed and would do better in the display. That's what killed all my fish, not the disease. I killed them.

@ReefDrama 9 месяцев назад
Hey Gary, sorry to hear you've had a wipeout in the past, too. What awful luck with that last fish 😞 Sounds virtually the same situation as mine with them passing each day. It's good to know about it not being brook. At least I can rule that one out. I will look into the CP you mentioned. Yeah, I can't wait to release the surviving few back into the 625xl and then start stocking up the QT with the new ones 😀 Thanks for the advice about a stressed fish in the QT. I’ve always felt that lots of reef hobbyists overstock their tanks with fish. Not from a biological perspective necessarily, but just from an aesthetic perspective. This becomes really risky if the hobbyist in question does not have a really strict quarantine process in place, because each fish added is a roll of the dice which can kill every other fish in there.
@ReefDrama
@ReefDrama 9 месяцев назад
Hi, you're absolutely right about the roll of the dice. I, for one, will no longer be playing the non QT roulette!! I think I had, as you say, the aesthetic quantity right in my tank for movement and colours, however Piney my Porcupine Puffer, has always been set for a tank upgrade as he gets bigger. In the future, I'm hoping to achieve this, and if not, then sadly, I will have to look to rehome him. That Orange Tang I have left will also get quite big. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

Follow humblefish, he's the foremost expert in fish disease. I followed his quarantine steps when my blue tang got ich. For best results set up your quarantine tank with a hang on back filter full of biomedia from your DT, like bioballs live rock or matrix. Be sure to have a seachem ammonia alert in the tank in case your biomedia cant handle all of the ammonia you can add some Prime or do a water change. Fish can go straight into 2.0 ppm copper power on the first day. The next day raise it to 2.5 which is the therapeutic level. That will be day one of a month in copper at 2.5. After the month do 100 percent water change and observe for 2 more weeks. During this 6 weeks the tank has been fallow. Make sure to raise the temp to 80.6 or a bit higher as this will make the parasite life cycle complete faster. After 6 weeks, since your DT and quarantine are the same temp just move the fish back to the DT. It works like a charm and if you did it soon enough all will survive. From there on out no fish goes into DT untill a 6 week quarantine. Make sure to have a complete set of tools, fish net, siphon, etc for your quarantine and NEVER cross utilize. One last note is to make sure DT and Qaurantine are at least 10 feet apart.
@ReefDrama
@ReefDrama 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the recommendation, I did actually watch his quarantine procedure and did exactly what you said, HOB filter with Seachem Matrix from the DT, Seachem Ammonia Alert, etc. I have all separate accessories for the QT to include net, heater, HOB filter, glass cleaner, towel, water change hose, etc. The only thing I couldn't do was have the 10ft between DT and QT. I also couldn't have the copper at 2.0ppm when the fish went in because of the Porcupine Puffer which is why I slowly increased it over maybe 5 or 6 days and once at therapeutic level then start the 30 days. I think the main problem for me was not being able to get hold of the copper as quickly as I would have liked, so I will keep some in the cabinet from now on. Thanks for your great comment, and thanks for supporting my channel 😀
