This is true. Recently I sent over a beat to a artist that I work with closely. He said "this beat is cool, but I like the other one you sent me better". I was like okay cool. Passed the beat on to 5 other artists and 4 of them liked it and wanted to use it. Music is subjective. Not everybody is gonna like your stuff. Gotta keep on pushing though.

"no matter who you are, you got a pack of DUDS" this is the realest shit I ever read. Every beat ain't hot! You gotta understand it takes makes several beats to find that one that slaps! Music is not meant to be easy to create. Keep pushing is the biggest take away from this & also be humble. You never stop learning! One day off can make you rusty! Whoever you are, keep making music! Sometimes greatness comes from persistence

I feel like we all have an ego that tells us we made something great. But the real point is what you bring up that music is subjective. So if it’s subjective to everyone, something you like a lot will be complete trash to someone else. I think the idea is to just keep creating as a producer and experiment. Make as much content as you can even if it’s wack lol cause you never know who’s going to pick up that track anyway! My thoughts on this topic.

I’m sure some of us in here has had a session where you made a beat “on the spot” and only just programmed a kick and a clap, then all of a sudden everybody jumping up and down like they just won the Super Bowl!? It’s so scary that you wonder what’s in the weed these cats are smoking these days!? Nowadays this generation of hip-hop especially in trap music, that’s all it takes. There are a lot of cheat codes out here that will help you get started on your production/beat making i.e. Nico’s Unison Midi Pack , Drum Monkey to name a few that requires little to no skill at all to come with something halfway decent. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not throwing shade at the two companies product, but it should be understood that it’s NEVER the gear, but the individual behind the gear. On that note, In the immortal words of Li Mu Bi,“Real skill requires no effort!“ Peace, Love and Wellness!

Thanks Bolo...I honestly needed to hear this from someone like you. I've been recently rethinking a goal that I have of getting to a point where everything I make is fire. But honestly even superproducers like Pharrell probably are still making trash ideas every day. We only hear the ones that are good, so it just feels like they make fire all the time. I think you just have to make sure you just create consistently, stay curious, experiment, learn, and good music will come. But the bad beats will probably never go away no matter how good you get

See, contrary to what the world says, a person that will tell you the truth, the honest truth, is a person that has your best interest at hand. They don't won’t you walking around deceiving yourself or being deceived by others. They actually care about your growth. They not like everybody else telling you what you want to hear and babysitting your feelings. It's called tough love. And very few give it, and very few receive it. We're living in a time where boasting and rubbing your own ego is acceptable and cool. In my experience those people have trouble with accepting (constructive) criticism and call you a hater. There's always small results, but they tend to act like major things are coming for them if they just continue believing in themselves. Humble people come a long way cause they feel like they never did their best/enough, that's why they constantly improve and want to learn more and usually don't feel comfortable when they get compliments..

Don't trip people, a lot will be trash. I produce, write, graphic design, cinematographer, and engineer...In all of these cases a lot comes out trash. Sometimes you just have to reboot and don't always expect to be perfect. I wrote a few e-books on my old websites about this topic. The reason I think is because although you're an "expert", creativity requires the use of imagination which can be affected by many factors. Every day won't be 100%. You'll have 30% days, 50%, etc. Beethoven didn't always make a classic, DaVinci didn't always paint a masterpiece. Just keep working and don't be discouraged. Not every team wins a superbowl. Stay focused and lock in!!! MOST IMPORTANTLY, enjoy yourself while doing it. JORDAN DOES NOT MAKE EVERY BASKETBALL BUT HES STILL A LEGEND!

I quit looking for what other producers think on my beats. They didnt have real insight on what I needed to change or what I needed to do with the mix. So I learned to talk with audio engineers. Thats how I learned some tricks and how I am still learning. I accept that my shit can be trash to the other producer's' ear but thats not who I am wanting to hear that from. I accept an artists thoughts as well as the engineer's.
@detroitredofficial

This is the most realistic approach to producing that I’ve heard in a long time. Adversity is key, learning and growing as a producer/writer/etc. is critical and graciously accepting feedback can only elevate your game. There’s a reason someone like Prince could have a VAULT of unreleased music, somewhere in the assessment of that music it was found to be trash!! I’ve made trash and I knew it was trash but it was practice… whether it was a drum pattern, style of melody, something. But I elevated from it, next beat improved and so on. We’re lucky to be in positions to create so much trash before getting to that one hot track!!

Gauging is important….. AS A PRODUCER we need to know when we make something hot and when we make something “okay”. More often than not you’re going to make something “okay” meaning yea it will get placed yes it will be meaningful in a way just a good beat. But then when you make something “hot” or “special” we need to recognize this too! It’s not always hearing it from someone else. Years of practice, working with artists, having true special tracks under your belt will help you realize what’s just okay and what’s special when it comes to your own work. This type of gauging doesn’t happen over night it takes Years of practice and experience AND having hits under your belt to know what’s one and what’s not..

I think it's a matter of artistic maturity. With time, experience and consistency, our music evolves thereby we mature hence have a different and a more solidified view of your music. So when we view our beats, we view them with the evolved version of ourselves, hence definitely it will not be seen as something great/satisfactory. And this is actually a good sign. Definitely signaling that we're on the right track. In the end, I reached a point where I make music for my own enjoyment and satisfaction and it will speak for itself as long as I know what I'm doing.

I think this is valuable only when you are evaluating yourself and you have a stacked library of beats. If you have this midset when your starting to make beats, there would be no drive to create. Maybe an alternative mindset would be to really love the your beat as if its a masterpiece when your creating and THEN have this mindset (its probably trash) when your done to help you move on and do the next "masterpiece".

I think I struggle on the opposite end, every beat I make I run into the ground by over tweaking. "This bass line sounds like absolute garbage, that snare needs to be different" etc etc. I know a lot of people who've done music their whole life like producers, concert pianist, drummers, etc and a lot of em will tell me,"This shit good af" but I just can't ever hear it.

I know that there are things i can definitely do better and more to learn.. Everyone isn't for everyone.. Lol. i can admit i have made some stinkers (the cowbells) and i still do ... But in the end ..let it come from the heart and bang out!!

I think there are 3 types of beats : 1- Fire you don't need a vocal on it for it to be hot and most emcees love freestyling on it when they hear itex: grinding 2- Trash- no explaination needed 3- (potiental beats) Is a decent beat but with the right artist it fits in the pocket and makes a good song. Everyone won't be able to spit to that beat but when the right artist gets on it the magic happens. I agree we all make trash beats. I might make one or 2 fire beats a month but most of my beats fall in the 3rd category. I often start beats but don't finish them and when I go back and listen I chop it up as trash but have seen other people hear it and they love it so go figure.

Bolo yah…. Videos Be hitting the Nail on the head man a lot of Producers & DJ’S think there beats are dope they can be if you take the time to learn music theory. Pick up a instrument learn how to sample understanding song, structure Stop using loops so much….. taking breaks from making beats people burn them selves out that’s why a lot y’all don’t sound….. good than last but not least alot of y’all so call producers only can stay in one genre that’s the knock out punch… Yall stay safe ! GOD BLESS EVERYONE!!!!!!…….

Ego death is real and not sustainable. I know I have hits and misses. I can tell when I was having a bad day on my beats as well and trying to regain my sense of happiness. I try my best to only make music when I’m feeling good. I find that I come up with my most creative ideas on those beats. The others I mark them as practice and ideas. I may go back and listen to the Melodie’s if it savable.

thats facts I been making music for years, and I always tell myself if I make 100 beats, I may only like about 10 of them at the max. our sound our ear and thought process develops as time goes, what was hot today is not hot two weeks from now on im 33 I started when I was 14

This is 💯 valid about leaving your ego aside. I know from experience if I make 10 beats only 1 or 2 are gonna be bangers.

A lot of producers don't understand that their beats sound sonically trash. Especially when they get played on speakers that are way better than the ones they produced and mixed them on. I learned that the hard way back in 2006 when I had my first session in a professional grade large format studio.
