Restoration of an antique 1900's leather "Kit" bag (more commonly know today as a "Gladstone" or "Doctor's" bag) made by the famous English maker Finnigan's. Similar style of bags were produced by industry giants such as Louis Vuitton, Goyard, Moynat, Drew & Sons, Mappin & Webb etc. At its time, this was the most popular and widely used bag on the market.
In this "short" video I take you through my personal restoration steps and show how the bag gradually regains it's shape, colour and mirror shine. I must preface that this video is not a tutorial! Every antique leather item has endured different pollutants and suffered various damages, thus the restoration is always personalised after an in-depth analysis of the item.

The English word, "meticulous"...was invented because of this video. 😎

Very nice restauration! Would you mind describing what kind of different products you are using in the video?

Thank you very much! Unfortunately I don't want to disclose the magic just yet. But I am planning to produce a series of videos covering the science and mindset behind most of the restoration steps - "the why" and then "the how". Currently I feel that I need to perfect some of the procedures before I can give a definitive guide. Be sure to follow the channel!

Guessing saddle soap, saphir leather renovator, peckards leather balm and you can use feibings dye to recolour the leather. I used saphir Canadian cream to recolour after the dye process

@@JulesA-C Hello. Good try, but not one of your mentioned items was used for this restoration. When it comes to vegetable tanned leather, I strongly advise against using saddle soap. Can't comment on other products you mentioned, because I haven't had experience with them and haven't studied their contents. Dyes can be used, but mostly to hide defects, otherwise the dye ruins the patina.

@@antiquelugagge Saddle soap is a glycerin-based soap and it's made for use on vegetable tanned leather. It cleans, conditions and also slightly protects leather. Firstly, lather a damp sponge or cloth with saddle soap and lightly rub in circular motions over the leather. from what I read and seen. Anyway great video.

What product did you paint on to consolidate the fibres? I could do with some for my own project 😊

What do you do in the cornerw there where it gets stretched, crackly, etc? Juat leaving moisturizing compounds on longer? I find that even after I had my bag professionally repaired and conditioned my corners are a bit crusty

Nice video but as others have commented did not learn anything to help me with my own restorations..

Nice work, and great choice of music. I agree with the other commenters, though. You need to do a better job of describing what you're doing and what you're using. You don't have to give out brand names, you can just mention the type of product you're using (conditioner, wax, etc). Most people come to RU-vid to learn something, and if you're not going to teach, we're not going to watch.

Results are great, but fairly useless for learning if you don't share the products you are using.

You will never have a huge RU-vid following...if you do not share, the products, and the exact steps you are using/taking to restore this leather. For example, you never explain how long or even when, you let the leather dry. You never "show", the products you use to "nourish and burnish" the leather. You never show, the product you use to, "strengthen the fibers". You just perform the task...without showing exactly what you did. You are very good and very meticulous at what you do...but people will not subscribe to your channel...should you not share your exact steps. Just a little wise advice. Good job though. Just wish I knew what products you were using.

Thank you very much for the kind words and advice. As mentioned in a previous comment reply, future videos will cover the restoration process in more detail. It is vital to know the reasoning of the used products, rather than the products themselves. But explaining the reasoning in great detail will take time. For starters, my used products are effective in treating aged vegetable-tanned leather and won't have much effect on chrome-tanned leathers. A guide on my techniques will come with time, be sure to follow this channel. :)
