Which commanders do you think are the most powerful Commanders in the set? Did we miss any? Are you planning on building any of the Commanders we talked about today? What are the sweet cards that we missed?
Think there was a major miss for Akul--you can't have Goblin swarms and etbs without the king, Purphoros. The other Purphoros costs 5 and gives stuff haste, and then there's the newly reprinted Terror of the Peaks, which goes extra hard with cheating out big stuff. Also, minor flub on Rachel's part: the treasures Vraska turns your stuff into aren't tokens, meaning you can't double them up with Parallel Lives or Second Harvest or populate stuff.
1:52:30 I read about that just today, coincidentally ^^ Here's how the story goes: Jace is so powerful a telepath that he managed to mind control his immune system into fighting the compleation. He then planeswalked to Vraska, found an uncompleated part of her conscience in the mind palace he had previously built in her mind, and taught her immune system the same trick. They then planeswalked to his home plane, where his mother, an accomplished healer (who had presumed him dead for years), nursed them back to health. Only afterwards did they realize that Vraska had been desparked in the process. Worried about what the Omenpaths might mean for the multiverse they set up the events of OoTJ so that they could get their hands on Loot.
Note: pretty sure with kellan and mentioning fblthp near the end it was stated you could plot them play them that turn , you can't cast any plotted turns the turn you plot them , has to be a following turn.
Kellan, The Kid is love at first sight for me, it is an open ended engine to use a lot of fun mechanics as well as many of my favorite cards. I do think finding the balance between instant speed interaction and actual things to cheat into play, but so long as you can get lands in, all is well.
It's great because it's a playstyle that has never really been in Bant before, but it's still kind of got the signature Bant "vomit your hand onto the battlefield" playstyle. Super well designed, has synergy with tons of mechanics, but still doesn't seem super overpowered. I'm really happy with this Kellan.
i have an eriette of the charmed apple deck and i'm building a eriette, the beguiler deck with the other eriette in the 99 2 eriette decks, double the fun
I'm a little sad that there was no mention of Lilah, Undefeated Slickshot. Seems like Wizards is gradually increasing the support for prowess. My intuition is that it may be a signpost for Izzet in Bloomburrow. And Swords to Cowshares is an expert pun!
Something they didnt mention about Vraska, is that you dont even *need* a stream of removal spells to kill creatures in golgari. She can revolve around a deathtoucher core. There are like 5 equipment in the game that let you ping creatures for 1 with attatched creatures for dirt cheap, and giving access to cheap fight and ping spells makes your killing much more consistent. Also, Felix Five-Boots has blue and black. Hes a ninjutsu commander.
Funny enough, I was looking at the Grand Larceny precon and might take out some of the combat damage cards and Felix to add more cast from exile cards on Gonti, Canny Acquistor.
I’m surprised not to see the new Kambal here. There are a ton of tokens floating around in Commander games these days, so Kambal will provide a ton of value just from your opponents. But beyond that, he’s maybe the best commander I’ve seen for a deck built around giving the table a ton of tokens to blow up later for Blood Artist, Syr Konrad, etc. Hunted Horror gives you 13 power for just 2 mana! Forbidden Orchard becomes one of the best lands ever printed! Alliance of Arms is obscene!
Not to mention the sheer volume of tokens you get from Infernal Genesis and Tombstone Stairwell. I also quite like Wedding Ring, since you get two of them for double the draw and life gain. Saw in Half can be used offensively to copy someone’s best creature twice, which is delightful. Kambal has so much tech, it’s been a really fun build around.
@@seductiveswine7387 I appreciate you for the Saw in Half tech! The Wedding Ring play is hilarious anyway (I’m twice as married as you), but it gets truly ridiculous with a Panharmonicon. I’m also trying out Overencumbered as a pseudo Secret Rendezvous that can really hose artifact-heavy aggressive decks.
@@covfefe5842 I had forgot about panharmonicon. You can really just invite everyone to the polycule at that point, huh? Plus if you’re running corpse knight and suture priest effects that can definitely get out of hand quickly. I remember overencumbered being targeted in the majority of deck techs as a cut from Dogmeat, so I’m also glad to give it a home.
@@seductiveswine7387 Yea, you can also play Delney to double your Kambal/Priest/Knight/Blood Artist triggers. It’s even grosser than it first appears because a token on any opponent’s side will make two Kambal triggers, which will each produce an additional drain.
@@covfefe5842 I completely forgot about Delney, that’s awesome! Plus her unblockable ability means that my 50 billion Tombstone Stairwell zombies are probably getting in. Going to have to pick one up for sure.
Important correction on Jaxis + Ghired: Jaxis gives all of the Blitz properties to the token as a continuous effect, rather than modifying the copying process (Jaxis says "it gains", rather than "except"), so copies of the tokens you make with Jaxis will not have haste, will not draw a card when they die, and will not be sacrificed at the end of the turn.
Delina, Wild Mage would be bonkers in a Roxanne, Starfall Savant deck. Delina can come down before Roxanne, and then attack the turn Roxxanne comes down. Roxanne's attack trigger doesn't happen with Delina since the token would enter already attacking, but it is still a token copy that enters the battlefield, so it is essentially a blink effect on attack that will make more meteorites. Edit: I started putting together a decklist for Roxanne, and I found Esika's Chariot, another great card for Roxanne. Attacking with it can create a copy of ANY token you control unlike other things that tend to only copy creatures, so you can make more meteorites. Another great combo, although it's difficult to pull of because it requires two cards on board, is Stangg, Echo Warrior and Dan Lewis. Dan turns all of the meteorites, and any other artifacts you have, into equipment, so then you can equip all of those artifacts to Stangg, and then Stangg copies all of them on attack. All the copies are sacrificed at the end step, but they all still get the ETB triggers and could be tapped for mana before they go. Some other noteworthy cards are Blade of Selves and Nexus of Becoming. Blade of selves effectively works like Delina, giving Roxanne myriad, and Nexus of Becoming gives some card draw and creates the possibility of turning regular mana rocks like sol ring and arcane signet into tokens so that they create extra mana from Roxanne's ability. Also, Displaced Dinosaurs can turn any new meteorites into dinos XD instead of sending them into extinction, meteorites will make new dinos!
I tried brewing Kellan, the Kid and it just kind of falls flat; and I think the discussion from Rachel and Jimmy shows that too. Like they said, if you're not keeping your hand full, Kellan's not doing anything. On top of that, he's a rather inconsistent payoff for casting other things that don't really have any synergy with one another. He seems much more interesting in the 99 of another deck that enables you to play from exile or top of deck, but the 3 mana color identity prevents that from happening in most other decks. If he was red it would allow for a much better impulse payoff, but alas...
The way I build my decks, that should not be an issue. I would build the deck around a theme that can operate without the commander, then let the commander be a utility that can be fun if needed. Adventures come to mind.
eh a lot of these don't seem terribly fun to play against. stuff like eriette and obeka are cool but super unfun most of the time ultimately (to play or play against). they're the decks you feel like you're being clever and then realize you either get your giga upkeep drain and basically insta-win or the table shuts you down and you kinda do nothing and lose. other cards like gitrog just look... boring? like REALLY boring. roxanne is fun token-mana stuff but it's a been there done that style thing so idk. not super interested in basically any of these here. geralf looks like a fun zombie-storm deck. gisa is a super fun crime-lord deck.
One huge card that I _love_ in the new Obeka is Descent into Avernus. Generates you a _ton_ of treasures, slugs the rest of the table into kill range, and it hitting you isn't as bad since you'll likely have other draining effects like Twilight Prophet. Curses are also quite good in Obeka. Cathedral of War and Forge of Heroes are a couple of my fav lands for decks where you want to buff your commander.
For Vraska, they mentioned a lot of animate artifact enchantments, but not Titania's Song. You animate everyone's noncreature artifact. that way you kill everyone else's treasures but get to keep your own, since yours have a cmc.
1:44:04 i got some few suggestions to add for roxxane is you can try out aggregated and hellkite charge cause the are mana sinkers that can add more meteorites to you collection, there is also esika’s chariot and one card that i was pretty obsessed with is orthion which you can use to make 5 copies of roxxane, though she does die from legend rule she will still make 5 meteorites. I really love this card because the idea of killing someone with meteorites is funny.
I brewed around the new Obeka, but didn't end up with a list that I thought would be fun for me and my playgroup (it would have been a very feast-or-famine voltron deck), so I brewed around Kellan, the Kid next, wasn't liking that it turned out too "good-stuff-y" and finally settled on my first budget deck (entire deck including lands under 100 €, not extremely budget, but a decent first for me): Doc Aurlock's Crazy Adventures ! An adventure deck in Simic colors that plays a couple of Plot and Foretell cards for good measure and tries to win in very fair ways (and without any extra land drops or landfall triggers).
Obeka is going to be an absolute all star in my grixis nine/Clara upkeep deck for the grixis package, initiative and dungeons is hilarious when you can finish the undercity in a single turn
Note on Roxanne and mana rocks that have conditions on their mana (like powerstones): Roxanne generates the mana herself and has no restrictions on use, so Powerstones can be tapped and the additional colorless mana can be used to cast nonartifact spells. However, this also means Icy Manaliths from Svella only count as producing one snow mana, as Roxanne isn't a snow permanent.
So from my single pack of OTJ, I got Vraska (btw: my absolute favorite Planeswalker) and decided to build around her. Recently bought the deck (slightly blinged out with variant arts and whatnot) and have a feeling that it'll be a bane at my various pods. My one deck building restriction was to include EVERY Vraska and card that mentioned Vraska in the name/rules text, so there's I think 2 combos built in (Triskelion+Vraska, Swarm's Eminence and Roper+Viridian Longbow) as means to end the game faster plus Fynn because Deathtouch is a solid way to go for insuring things die. Excited to see it on the table
We need another Game Knights, now focused on the Precon stuffs. I'm loving Outlaws, I'm building a deck around Satoru, the Infiltrator and it'll be a mix of Ninja/Ninjutsu and Reanimate. It's holding a lot of emotional value for me because it's my first time ever building a Commander deck of my own - or in my case, a Historic Brawl, because I'll be playing it on Magic Arena. Can't wait to craft that deck and roll out!
Some interesting lands to play in obeka are bottomless vault, dwarven hold, and sand silos. If you are able to get those extra upkeeps they will almost always be tapping for at least 2
I swear Wizards does not know how to make interesting Temur commanders. (I think Beluna and Lara Croft are at least interesting, maybe even Magus) But I think Loot is very boring and promotes a deck build of just "stuff". And most other Temur commanders are generically "make incredible value happen". We need more mechanics and themes associated with Temur for better commanders.
I built an Obeka voltron deck, hit one person for 23 damage with a ring of evos isle equipped, next turn hit another player for 45 with double strike and trample...
For a Rakdos sacrifice deck how did you pick Akul the Unrepentant over Rakdos the Muscle? Rakdos the Muscle is clearly the more powerful of the two. Giving you card advantage and plus a win-con by exiling your opponents entire libraries. Which can be done at instant speed mind you.
I'd like to say that with Felix Five-Boots you can lean into toxic as getting the poison counters is triggered by combat damage (if I'm wrong let me know but I think thats how it works) Absolutely nasty
Toxic is like lifelink, it's an additional element of combat damage, not a triggered ability. Same with infect. Fynn, the Fangbearer is the secret sauce for that sort of trick.
@@canamrock doesn't the reminder text of toxic specifically say it triggers from combat damage? Or am I misunderstanding that, what's the ruling that prevents it and lifelink from working with it?
@@skulg359Yeah sadly it’s not a triggered ability, it’s static. But like the other guy said Fynn is great with Felix. A number of poison staples proliferate on combat, so Felix doubles them too. You can also run cards with Poisonous, or the really old creatures with poison abilities from before New Phyrexia, as all those are combat damage triggers. I definitely think poison is a valid option, especially considering he has blue, which most of the recent poison commanders have been lacking.
Can someone please explain Loot. Creature, artifact, enchantment, Battle and Planeswalker is 5. In the video she said a kindred spell and then they said thats six non-land card types. I can't find what a kindred spell is. I figured it out. Tribal used to be called kindred.
Correct me if I'm wrong but having Nature's Will on board with Gitrog Ravenous Ride should let you untap all those freshly played lands, right? Just get you even more gas to play all that card draw
I would like to mention Stella Lee as the most powerful. It's a storm deck and she goes infinite with a ham sandwich. Dramatic Reversal and twiddle would give you infinite mana. Twisted Fealty is an act of treason that untaps the creature and gives it a wicked role that would kill the whole table. And the floor of the deck would be to double your cantrips to draw extra cards or have an extra counter in a counter war. Definitely think Stella is a very powerful commander.
I don't really see why Vraska, the Silencer would get under peoples skin and Eriette, the Beguiler is not. One kills your stuff and steal it and the other one is putting aura on your thing, giving it indestructible / protection from a color / shroud or some nonsence like that and make it almost impossible to get it back and she can steal someone commander way easier the Vraska 😅
Vraska is just powercrept glissa the traitor. Deathtouch ping with equipment like thorn bite staff. It’s not gonna have a good space to play in. It will be oppressive to lower power but but completely shut down at a good table.
I got a feeling the best removal spells in the Vraska deck will be bite spells because she also has deathtouch… so rather than play any of your 2 mana black removal with limited targets or other downside, just have her deal dmg equal to her power and kill anything not indestructible for just as cheap.
i feel like i need obeka splitter of seconds in my prismatic bridge and jodah the unifire with halana and alana crazy to get 6 upkeep trickers with prismatic bridge and halana XD.....
Unfortunately the treasures from vraska comes in tapped so you cant do the encore combo. Unless you had enough mana to board wipe and cast encore . And pay the one for each creature that died that turn.
Using Akul to cheat in creatures that instigate extra combats and double damage to take advantage of his aggressive stat line and key words seems decent
@commandcast Are there cards that can change the names of tokens created? I want to build a Yuma, Proud Protector deck that focuses on the 4/2 Plant Warrior token and apply a bunch of effects that can pump up key aspects of the token (some for green, some for reach, and / or some for Plant / Warrior).
