Brad, The Haltech Elite ecus cannot control passive coils directly. According to the spec sheet they can only sink 1 amp on the coil outputs, and I'm guessing the stock Toyota coil will pull more than that. The amplifier is basically a digital relay that takes the signal from the ECU and fires the higher current 12v line to the coil (as I'm sure you're already aware). If you wanted to get away from the amplifier box on the cheap, I'd just run 4 of the LS truck coils with the heat sinks on them directly on the spark plugs. Wiring diagrams are online, but they just need ground, switched 12v, ECU signal, and ECU sensor ground. Would require a little rewiring but IMO a better setup. That's what I run on my Datsun 260z. You will need cam sync or some way for the ECU to find TDC if you want to run it full sequential, I have no idea if that engine has a sensor on the cam or distributor you could use for that. Disclaimer, I run ECUMaster on most of my stuff so I'm basing this off what I read on Haltech's spec sheet. And finally, I rarely comment on videos but I'm so happy you're posting content, I wanted to contribute. Keep the videos coming my friend!
Brad, your are the reason I got into hoonigan as much as I did, you brought the “real car guy” vibe. It was never about the views always about the cars. Glad to see you appreciate all your old hoonigans so much. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you! One day I hope I can see the mini truck in person! Leah’s last name is pruett btw.
