So I believe Fishman Island is one of the best arcs in One Piece and I feel like it’s constantly getting overlooked due to people not understanding the true nature of the villain and more importantly understanding how it impacts the greater themes of the show. To explain this we have to first look at one of the most important themes in One Piece: inherited will. Inherited Will and the passing down of dreams and ideals is a cornerstone of One Piece but the biggest emphasis put on this theme comes in the prior arc Marineford, here we see the celebration of inherited will it’s praised and extolled as virtue, “Some day someone will come carrying generations of our history on their back and challenge the whole world to a Fight!” Lines like that really helped build the weight behind One Piece’s world, it helps crystallize the idea for the reader/watcher that this is a battle centuries in the making and we are only seeing one part of the greater narrative. Fishman Island however flips the script showing us how inherited will can have flaws, specifically Inherited Hatred. Fishman Island shows how dreams and ambitions can be passed on but also the ugly emotions and hatred can get passed on to a next generation how it can poison and erode any chance for moving forward. Hody Jones tells Prince Mamboshi in one of my favorite moments of the arc that humans did nothing to him, and it’s in this shocking momment that the prince realizes that he has to accept his role in the political situation of Fishman Island as he didn’t speak out against the building anti human sentiments (against his mother’s wishes) he allowed hatred to build in the Fishman District allowing it to consume his people. Luffy inherited Roger’s will of freedom and adventure based off the stories and legends he grew up with, but he also had his own experiences and as such became a full rounded person he also learned about how Roger did destroy the dreams of others on his journey (the muscle pirate guy who trained luffy in the flashback arc) because of this Luffy didn’t grow up to be a sycophant with no grasp on reality; Hody on the other hand grew up listening to tales of human cruelty and became indoctrinated in hatred and lies. Now you might be asking what lie? And the answer to that is: the death of Fisher Tiger, on of the most important events in One Piece. In case you don’t remember Fisher Tiger was betrayed by human’s he tried to help and escaped a deadly ambush but needed a blood transfusion sadly none of his fellow Fishman had the same blood type as him, however their was human blood of his type on the supplies of the navy ship his men stole so they could escape. However Fisher Tiger refused to have “the disgusting blood of human’s in his veins” now what I love about Fisher Tiger was that he is a character who is aware of his own demons, and tries to fight them but logically struggles with them. After escaping enslavement at the hands of humans it’s no wonder that Fisher Tiger would hate humanity, in fact it makes total sense, but he understood this wasn’t the way forward, that hatred would lead to no progress for the Fishman, so he asked his crew on his death bed not to pass on the story about how he refused the blood because he knew such things would only deepen the divide between humans and Fishman. Arlong couldn’t understand this he was angry at the death of his father figure and wanted someone to blame wanted to keep hating, so when he got captured he changed the story, not only passing on Fisher Tiger’s hatred but adding his own, this new story, about how human’s refused to give Fisher Tiger a blood transfusion would become the “truth” that Hody Jones would grow up hearing. As I mentioned earlier Hody is a hollow villain because he is Fisher Tiger’s anger, his hatred that’s grown to the point where it will consume the future generations of Fishman Island. This is why this arc is so important for Jimbei, for him it’s a chance to not only save his people but to fulfill his promise to Fisher Tiger, and not let his hatred be carried forward anymore. Fishman Island flips the narrative of inherited will by showing the negative aspects of it, and it’s true villain, Fisher Tiger’s hatred, is defeated in a way that fulfills a decades long promise for Jimbei. Is because of these aspects I believe it’s one of the top 5 arcs of One Piece, so far. Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.

There's Joco from Samurai King and Saotome Junko with her boyfriend Takakura Kyosuke of Nana. They're levelheaded and smart, but barely got screentime. The only times you do see Junko, she's giving Komatsu advice after what Slow Shoji and Trifling Takumi did.
