I agree. I do find it hard to believe that there are only 1.1B Mandarin speakers and 600K Hindi speakers.

@@user-vz4xf4tm2i Where would you find additional Mandarin speakers!?? I think this chart is correct. Not all Chinese speak Mandarin.

only 50% of Chinese could understand Mandarin in 1950, which is primarily a northern, aristocratic language, to about 90% by 1980.

@@odonnelly46 I dunno... how many chinese immigrants are there around the world. Literally, every chinese immigrant I know speaks Mandarin and high percentage of second generation chinese do as well. Same with the Indian immigrants I know. Virtually, all of them can speak hindi, regardless of their native language. Heck, according to our tour guide in Dubai, it is the most spoken language in Dubai....

What's African Portuguese? The Portuguese spoken in Africa is heavily based on European Portuguese, mixed with creole.

Actually it is about 1.5 billion, because they are not talking about first language, merely how many people speak English (including as a second language). And 1.5 Billion is less than 19% of the global population.
