The scenery is INCREDIBLE. The rocks and cliffs, just wow. At one point it looked the train passed right by a hidden lush green valley.

Wow, someone did a heck of vertical cuts to get that track thru the canyon.

Nature's beauty is simply mind-blowing here. The huge red rocks are stunning and the train looks like a toy compared to the massive rock walls. I'm sure it was a tough job building the track on this rough terrain. The potash factory is pretty cool especially with the gorgeous surroundings. The cut north of Moab is incredible, basically the train is running in a deep trench there. It's good to see you weren't the only railfan who chased this local. Fantastic aerial footage again Dan. The trip to Utah was productive and very successful.

The Cane Creek branch line was built by Morrison-Knudsen for the D&GRW. (Rio Grande) They did cutting-edge work at that time.

You are right Z it is quite amazing. I am really glad I was able to get that deep cut to finish up the video. That spot wasn't even planned for the video. It happened by chance. I hope you will still enjoy more future videos that won't quite be able to compete with this haha!

A couple years ago (sadly before I had my new Canon camera), I drove my son-in-law out to Moab so he could take part in an endurance run. Quite fortunately, right upon our arrival, we caught the local just after it had exited the tunnel and started the climb to the upper plateau. I cannot begin to stress just how absolutely fantastic the scenery is along the route. It is unfortunate that the Rocky Mountaineer does not descend into the most scenic areas. I would also like to point out to those reading this, and contemplating a trip there, that you will need to plan ahead when dealing with the tunnel section. The highway takes a LONG route around it, so you should arrive the day before and find a camp area. There are hotels but Moab is now out of control busy with rock climbers and tourists. If coming from the east and a day ahead, I also strongly suggest taking the less used route 128 when you first encounter it on I-70. The scenery is FABULOUS and it brings you directly to Moab. From there you can go compass west to the Potash plant or north toward the junction with the mainline. Use your Google Maps for sure.

Another great video production. You were blessed with a perfect weather day. Sometimes it’s so windy through there you wouldn’t have been able to fly the drone. Southern Utah is America’s best example of the layers of sediment and rock that remained after the Great Flood. Your video of the book cliffs shows this as well.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 5 месяцев назад
Oh really windy huh? If that's the case then yes I had some major luck because that could have been bad. No wind this day. Yeah the Book Cliffs makes that very apparent as well.

Awesome how beautiful America truly is especially when seen from a cross country travelers perspective. I got to see much between the Mississippi River and both coast lines as well as traveling up the various rivers in the middle of the country. And the military put me overseas to serve my country so I have ridden the rails abroad too

MAGNIFICENT! That is how the scenery looked on my 32-inch computer monitor. I was mesmerized by the rock formations and the colors that I was seeing. I wonder what this video would look like on a large screen TV. The potash train looked beautiful passing through all this scenery. I really enjoyed the closing segment of the potash train running through that rock cut. Thank you for this video, Dan, it was well worth waiting to see the potash train in this one-of-a-kind location!

Pretty lucky on that!

Cool footage. If I'm not mistaken, all Colorado River downstreamers should be thankful for this spur line. Without it the UMTRA nuclear yellowcake remediation in Moab (across from Arches National Park Entrance) would have been a trucking logisitical nightmare. The railroad has moved an amazing amount of the contaminated soils from the factory site to a special holding bunker somewhere out west. If the CO river would have had a cataclysmic flood the entire CO drainage basin could have been polluted into eternity.

Spectacular, as always Dan, and I am this close to agreeing with you on this being the most striking Railroad in America... While the scenery is unbelievable and where the tracks go is amazing, where I feel it lacks is in the word Railroad; it's not really much of a railroad, with just a couple of old SD70Ms and a handful of old hoppers once-a-week. Still, this is spectacular and exceptionally well filmed, but for rail-fanning personally, I find the Columbia Gorge hard to beat; spectacular in its own right and you'll miss a train if you get a coffee!

I thought for certain that our trip was going to take us on to the east and follow the train through Ruby Canyon between Westwater, Utah, and Mack, Colorado. That's a gorgeous canyon, with the tracks often hugging the canyon wall on one side and the riverbank on the other. The view from Knowles Canyon Overlook is particularly special: you can look straight down on the train from 400 feet above! That canyon is a very popular float trip, too (so popular that now you need a permit). For what it's worth, I live in Grand Junction.
