@michaelbenardo5695
@michaelbenardo5695 Год назад
The real Chrysler built ones were the best, and the Fiat-built are probably better than these final French ones. What is wrong with the current HEMI is those oil spray jets that spray the underside of the pistons. They should instead have sprayed the cam, and that cam shouldn't have been placed so high up, and there are no oil spurt holes in the con rods. German "engineering".

In the early to mid '60s what I remember winning the AA/FD class, at the drag strip, were 392s. Oh you could run just about anything else but you just weren't going to beat any good 392 with it. Guys like Tommy Ivo that started with Buick engines eventually had to move to the 392 to remain competitive. The 426 Hemi only took over when they began advancing the timing way beyond what was healthy for the 392. Before they did that even the new generation Hemi wasn't competitive at first. Finally Chrysler factory sponsored Don Garlits tried to blow his 426 up in a fit of rage, by advancing the timing to 50 degrees and blew out the top speed and low ET records instead by 20 mph more and nearly a 1/3rd second less respectively.

That’s because the Hemi is a thoroughly obsolete design. Even back in the day Chrysler made the wedge head to replace it. That’s because free-flowing isn’t really good for mixing fuel and air and it is complicated to build. But Chrysler marketed it and marketed it again pulling on Boomer heartstrings who’s brains don’t know better. If they’d have put half as much effort into the 440 it would be the engine everyone talks about

I really need to make an instructional video on how to properly rev up an engine. Snap the throttle, snap the throttle, idle it up for a few seconds... then snap the throttle again. Why does everyone do it exactly that way every f#@king time? 4:43 - this must be the only guy on youtube who knows how to do it right.
@Bartonovich52
@Bartonovich52 4 года назад
There’s no proper way. Revving an engine serves absolutely no purpose. If you rev an engine... you’re purposefully wearing it out for no reason.
@livewire2759
@livewire2759 4 года назад
@@Bartonovich52 You don't street race much, do you? You have to show the other guy what you've got. Watch American Graffiti, or the scene from 2 fast 2 furious, where they race the rice burners against the camaro and the challenger. When the guy revs up that HEMI and wipes the smile of the other guy's face... THAT"S why you rev an engine. Ok, seriously, I get what you're saying, but when you're engine is all warmed up, just revving it up for a few seconds doesn't wear it any more than a minute of idling anyway, so why not have some fun? Also, after breaking in the engine, when you initially tune the carburetor and ignition, you want to rev it to see if you need to adjust any more, and just snapping the throttle doesn't tell you much. You have to rev it the way you will drive it, open the throttle and make it work a little.

Needs much more research- the Patton tank engines were made by Continental; v12s, but air cooled, and installed by Chrysler in the Pattons they built, as did Ford. This is the engine in Jay Leno's Tank Car. Chrysler did make a v16- inverted aero engine- it was experimental and didn't finish trials before WW2 ended; it is the "progenitor" of all Hemis- no mention of that one- the very first one!FR

Thx. That explains why the Patton tank sounds like a diesel- it's a noisy air cooled beast....lousy armor, flammable gasoline fueled deathtraps. It was faster and more manoeverable than the German tanks, but it's gun couldn't penetration thier heavier frontal armor at all.

On time when he was replacing rod bearings in one of them he was missing one in the set. He didn't want to drive back into town so he shimmed the bearing with a trimmed dollar bill and I listened to it run all summer while chopping weeds in the cotton. Not that it had to do with toughess but I thought it a pretty innovative fix.

The new hemi's are not true hemisphiracal head engines. The hemi on those engines are just trademark advertising.

Looking at the Chrysler technical drawings of the 1950's Hemis, they weren't the exact half sphere either. Fact is, the low dome or "poly" head is much more efficient, economy wise and handles pollution requirements better also. The Chrysler Hemi 6 was a low dome head, had the best fuel economy of all competition, and as a performer it held fastest accelerating Aussie production car record for 25 years(Valiant Charger R/T E-49) the only better 6 in Australia is the much more recent Ford Barra.

@@rossbrumby1957 Oldsmobile v-8s had some really efficient heads, they passed emissions in the mid seventies without a catalytic converter. Not the greatest at high HP but made a crap load of torque.

But they do have the lateral valves, which results in nearly straight ports and spark plugs near the center of the combustion chambers.

@@rossbrumby1957 That Poly was a very good chamber, but it could not match the hemi on the exhaust side.

While dodge was working on the engines they forgot to work on body design. By 1968 they got it right but in the 50's what a bunch of ugly cars. 392. What a great engine. When I was 20 you could buy them cheap. Not any more.

The 49 - 52 Dodges were not things of beauty, the 53 - 54 looked like what it was, a stretched Plymouth, but the 55 - 56 Dodge was a good looking car. The 57 - 58 were great looking cars, but the 57 was horrible quality, the 58 a little better, but still not the greatest. The 59 Dodge was a real beauty.
