Most Surprising Thing About This Cottage Garden Is...

The most surprising thing I’ve learned/realized about my new cottage garden is that I underestimated how successfully the plants would adapt and get established.
They have matured much faster than I expected, much to my delight. Now I find I must edit out some things, relocate some plants as is always the case when you are developing garden. Now, how do I garden, and try to find ways I can make it even more beautiful, more personal to my gardening style, and more easy to garden within. Please enjoy this garden stroll with me. #gardendesign #gardensurprises #gardenstyle

I love your backyard for several reasons. It's in the shade, it has more structure than the front, there are places for your eyes to rest, and it is restful to the mind and soul. It is a more interesting garden to me. The front garden is very beautiful but is visually confusing to me while in the midst of it. You definitely achieved your goal of it looking spectacular from a distance! If I lived there, I would enjoy it more with some structure, maybe some paths and a few areas of rest.

Absolutely a work of art, Linda. You talk about your sister who's an artist, well so are you. The only difference is the medium you all use. You asked about why we like the back. Linda, love your garden. De backyard feels more cohesive than the front yard. What I miss in the front is that it feels as two different gardens the two sides. It's nice that the they are not the same, but I think that a little more plant echos on both sides will make it feel more cohesive.

Linda, I think the backyard impact stems from your initial vision for it to be an outdoor living space. A beautiful garden should have a space to not just sit for a moment, but to live. Your color selectivity in the backyard in red, compliments the visual complexity of OK very well. Love from Germany 🌿♥️ It was a brave transition from your previous color palette, but bold, and beautiful in moderation.

I would love to see more of the bright pink that you have in the window window box scattered throughout the landscape. If you love Lantana, it comes in a bright pink. Wonder if you could add a few clumps of that to spread the pink around the garden.

I am definitely for the back yard. It seems more intentionally planted and structured. Plus I am all about shade and privacy. Adore the steps most of all. I think a nice evergreen anchor near the back gate for visual weight would be lovely and low maintenance. I agree never do a garden walk about without scissors.. and for me a gathering basket for what I prune and trim. The hot pink petunias would look nice repeated down the sides of the walkway up to the front porch. It really makes a statement.

I totally get the feel of the front yard as english cottage / slightly formal garden ( didnt quite expect all the pink in the window box however) . But where are you going with the back yard? It's like you can't seem to settle on what it's meant to echo. I get Mediterranean vibes? with touches of formal planting that don't blend the parameters of the garden very well. And I know I've mentioned it before , but all the RED is a killer! It absorbs the finesse of the landscape you've worked so hard on.

🌿💗 From these comments, I see a lot of error in thinking versus viewers simply leaving their options. Some viewers seem to be unaware of what a “cottage garden” is and what the key elements of the style are. Beyond that lack of knowledge (and for some of the commenters) TACT, the front garden is true to style. Great execution Linda! Beyond that and for the sake of community etiquette, I would like to comment that the “side garden” makes 3 areas. 🤣 While I love both the front and the back, the side is also a vibe of its own. 💗🌿

I planted ajuga for the first time in my shade and it has surprised me, too, with how it has filled out and spread. It is called Chocolate Chip, so I knew it was for me. I liked it so much I got 2 more varieties that are variegated. Now I am wondering if I start moving it throughout my garden and along paths, will I risk having it spread into the grass lawn? I noticed that even where I thought I dug out a clump -all I could see in one spot - it came back! I was happy to see it throughout your gardens!

I too prefer the backyard, but I also love the front patio. I think the reason we love it most is because it is the result of both everything you learned at the other house and the restricted well planned vision you had with your inso pictures. In the rest of the garden the vison is harder to grasp on video. I am sure in real life it's great. More formal settings look good on video.

In the back, by your gate where you want more weight....try a shrub called Stonehenge Skinny Yew (be sure to get Skinny, not just Stonehenge...Skinny is half the size). Stonehenge Skinny gets about 7 feet tall but only 1 1/2 feet wide, dark green, can handle shade. I didn't used to like yews, but love the ones I got from Proven Winners.

I like the backyard more than the front because I’m at home watching from a small condo with no garden and am able to live vicariously through your garden. When I’m “in” your backyard I want to sit, have an iced tea and then walk around for an hour and look at everything. It’s a place to imagine is my backyard. The front is more complex, it asks more of you. Maybe another place to sit and rest the eye would be good. I always liked the idea of a bench and a bit of grass. It says this space is meant for you.
