The gamboge hue in your list was interesting as I had not heard of it, but then I do not have any Winsor Newton paints. When I began (not that many years ago), I watched a LOT of videos and reviews and settled on M. Graham watercolours (which are very vibrant and readily available where I live -- or were pre-Covid). Then youtube artists starting raving about Daniel Smith, so I tried some of those (more expensive than M. Graham). I had heard that W&N were a little harder to activate, however I think it's time a tried a tube for myself. I lean towards earth tones and brick reds etc. As well, yellow ochre is one of my favourites. I like how you both swatched and demonstrated your use of the colours.

Hi Mary, thank you very much for your lovely and very informative comment. I do have to admit though, I have never tried the Daniel Smith's or M. Graham's ranges, but I have heard good reviews about them, I will have to give them a go at some point. Paul 🎨

Hi Paul, I need a limited palette because all brands are expensive here in Australia 🇦🇺. A 5ml tube of any professional product is upwards of AU$25. So if I choose 4 tubes I’m already at 100 dollars. I paint and gift my floral and wildlife work but want to use professional rather than student grade because I believe if I’m going to put in the time and effort, I’d like my work to look it’s best. I’m enjoying this colour mixing video.

Hi Lorrane, that certainly is very expensive. 🙄 I wonder if buying online from other countries is cheaper. Say for example AliExpress online or similar online sites. I know you would have postage and import taxes, but it may be worth looking into. Paul 🎨

Wow those are some great choices & some that I might have to give a try. My 12 favorite colors are from W&N Cotman colors: Lemon Yellow Hue, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Permanent Rose, Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cereulean Blue Hue, Emerald, Hooker’s Green Light, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, & Burnt Umber. Although I am also leaning towards Gamboge, Sap Green, Sepia, Indigo, Payne’s Gray, & Lamp Black. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us.

The blacks are great & they granulate. I won’t buy a kit that has no black or grey. I don’t have time to be mixing for a prevalent color when out sketching; ridiculous. (We don’t all live in the south of France …) There’s asphalt & dark alley ways everywhere here, crows / ravens/ starlings, the shore water isn’t blue, & no lilies of the field. 😅 MidAltantic USA … old Colonial Cities with leftover grunge from the Industrial Revolution. Burnt Sienna is king. I also bought Gamboge to add to my pro palette. After using it in a student Daler Rowney kit, I haven’t been able to leave it alone. Great choices!

Thank you very much. I have to say I've never experienced the type of area in which you live, it's all rural and open farm fields here in North Devon, UK, but I suppose you do get used to an area, the people and the type of weather you get. Keep painting, Paul 🎨

I have an accidental pallet. I pulled some things at random and like it so much I keep a tin of them all the time. It’s Naples yellow pale, (or buff titanium sometimes) yellow ochre, crimson, burnt sienna, French ultramarine and pfthalo turquoise. Absolutely mad, but actually a really enjoyable muted pallet.

@@TheDevonArtist it's not exactly flexible but it did make me think. I often do random paint draws., Stick them in a box and see what happens. But that was one of my faves.

I usually use daniel smith because winsor is more expensive for some reason but i have bought and like winsor newton's naples yellow deep, transparent orange, brown madder, permanent alizarin crimson, viridian, smalt, magnesium brown, caput mortuum violet and cobalt violet. I also like the cotman indian red and i bought the largest cotman mauve tube available.

I'm so glad I've found your channel! I love wildlife painting in watercolour. Excellent, clear presentation. Subscribed! 🤩🤩 I also use the w&n olive green, but it's nowhere as rich as your demo shows. Mine is rather pale and poor tinting. The green shown looks more like hooker's green 🤔🤔 Ps. I have that same 18 well palette you are demonstrating with. I bought mine decades ago. Shame w&n don't make it anymore. They tend to only stick with 6, 12 or 24 wells. 18 is perfect!

Hi Frances, yes colours do vary from screen to screen as well, so please bear this in mind. Plus, even though I try my best to get the colours looking right with my video editing, it can still vary a small amount. It's good to hear you have the same palette as well, lovely to use! Paul 🎨

I'm really trying to get my number of colors down. Im at 16 to feel like I can paint anything I want and not sacrificing anything. But also trying to find the perfect 6 colors for a small limited palette just to take out abs have fun.

Hi Penny, this is an old shop bought Winsor & Newton watercolours set, I’ve changed my colours within it quite a lot since then. I do like this because of the spacing between the half pans, sadly no longer available. Thanks for asking Paul 😀
