Mother! (2017) | Reaction | First Time Watching! 

So basically Javier was God and Jennifer is Mother Earth. The whole movie is just one big metaphor for how humans keep destroying the earth and doing horrific things and God will keep forgiving them for it, making them love Him even more. And that is a different mother in the beginning just like it's a different one at the end so that just means it'll be an endless cycle that we're doomed to repeat.

This is like the ultimate horror movie for introverts lol I remember when I watched it when it came out I was STRESSED as more and more random ass people kept showing up at her house

A mental trick that helped me when watching this movie: so you know how in stories when humans witness cosmic events or meet some higher-dimensional being, and someone says "it doesn't really look/sound this way, but this is just what your primitive human brain is able to comprehend"? This whole entire movie is that exact same thing: we're witnessing the creation of the world, the eons-long relationship between God and Mother Earth, and the entire history of human history/extinction play out in front of us. But those vast and cosmic events are beyond our human capacity to comprehend, so this smaller domestic version is what we see instead.

What interesting is the amount of times Nick says “STOP throughout this video, because the people keep disrespecting/destroying the house… now how many times did Mother Nature (played by Jennifer Lawerence) asked us humans to STOP hurting her??

Being raised catholic, I understood this entire move. If you watch just knowing the main couple is God, and mother nature. God creates the earth, the world, to make something prefect for mother nature. Together the world could be perfect. But he is self centered and doesn't create with his partner. he keeps adding to what already is a perfect creation. He is inspired creating the first man, to create woman. They take advantage of what is given to them and create turmoil. They have 2 sons, one gets jealous of the other and now murder and death have become part of the world. Then as God keeps trying to make his creation, humanity, perfect, he ignores his house being destroyed and mother nature becomes overwhelmed. But God likes the attention of humanity and had a child with mother, but not out of love, but to sacrifice to humanity for more praise and devotion. In the end humanity destroys the world till finally mother nature has enough and ends everything. So God take what was once perfect, and tries again. At least, that's what I got from it. 😊

As someone that’s big on invasion of privacy, this movie got me HEATED the first time I watched it 😭 I had never been so anxious and frustrated watching a movie 😅

This movie perfectly portrays what it's like to be married to a narcissist. Constant disrespect and disregard

Their eating of the baby symbolizes the Catholic belief that the bread and wine consumed during Holy Communion are the literal body and blood of Christ.

This movie is very good but it pissed me off. I would have been yelling at everybody to get out of my house! Not only that, but you're not going to talk to me like that in my house ever!

Nick CHUGGING wine to get through this. 😂😂 I don't blame him at all. Brilliant film but good grief it's a lot to deal with.

Mother nature and God.. (the house a symbol for the world, disrespected and destroyed by men) this movie is smart, but i like it more now when i know the thought behind it. First time was very confusing

The anxiety and uneasiness I felt when first seeing this in theaters was insane. My mom and I went opening night and I remember when the movie ended there were people in the theater saying out loud what was that and what just happened😂 I had to do a deep dive into it afterwards to try and understand the film because I was confused. Once I read it and understood it I did see the beauty in the plot of the story. I think a lot of people went into the movie thinking it was gonna be something completely different than what the final product was. Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job as always, but that baby scene at the end, scarred me for life! I know a lot of people didn’t like the film, but I personally enjoyed it but it’s definitely a film I can’t watch on a regular basis for how much it stresses me out seeing it😅

Absolutely love this movie. I'll never watch it again. Can't imagine how exhausting the filming of this must've been for Jennifer. Everyone just endlessly being mean towards her. I hope they gave her a massive hug when the cameras stopped rolling.

*Kinda spoilerish (?) explanation. This film is pretty symbolic and I admittedly had to look up what a lot of it means. But a quick rundown is that Jennifer's character represents Mother Earth, Bardem's character is God. Ed Harris represents Adam and Michelle is Eve (when they have sex in their house, I think that was a way of depicting original sin and humanity's fall from grace), with their two sons representing Abel and Cain (which explains the murder). And Mother's child is representative of Jesus Christ or at least a Messiah like figure. There's a lot more symbolism in the movie but that would be too long to explain. All in all, the movie is about exploring humanity's impact on our earth; the chaos, entitlement, sin and impact we leave on it throughout our daily lives.

The amount of “get out of my house!” clips you must have had in your horror movie mind, just ready to go. 😂 I absolutely adore the fact that you choose Daddy instead of Father… and I’ll definitely take a glass of the “Blood of Nick” if you will. 🍷😂

I saw this in theatres and I went in knowing it’s not meant to be taken literally - I think that’s the best way to view it. There was also only one other person in the theater and he kept exclaiming “WTF?!” every ten mins it was hilarious

Watching Nick spiral while watching this movie is giving me everything. LOL.

Love how in the middle of all the chaos of this movie you still have the green flag of calling out Javier's character for not helping his pregnant wife 🥰💚 Thankfully, I knew what this was about before watching it. Must be such a weird experience going in blind 👀

Nick, Nicholas, Nicky... This movie enraged me about 5 or 6 years when I first saw it. The rage returned, just like yours, listening to this reaction (but I had to support it). 😡 I couldn't even deal with the metaphors or this movie. The invasion of her space being ignored, terrified, omg.

Jennifer Lawerence is my Hero. She’s been my favorite actress ever since I saw her performance as Katniss in “The Hunger Games” franchise. That’s my favorite book series and she’s the only person who could have played that part. And her Oscar win for “Silver Linings Playbook” made me so happy. She’s considered to be the best actress of her generation for a reason. I can’t wait for her comeback.

Even if one does not get the religious translation, one gets the full experience of anxiety and stress fully immersed into JLaw's perspective. That doesn't feel good but makes the movie experience great. This is really a movie you feel.

I’ve NEVER in my life hated a movie more than this one

I don't understand anything about the religious allegory of it all, but man this movie captures EXACTLY what anxiety dreams feel like.

As good as this movie is, it‘s probably the most infuriating movie I‘ve seen. I physically cannot stand the audacity of these „guests“. 😭

You looking into the camera and not paying attention when the most horrific part of the movie happened really bothered me lol.

I went in pretty blind and was so confused for the first half but I was raised Catholic(now atheist) so it all clicked for me once the 3rd act hit. I also saw this in the theaters so with the amazing sound design this was the embodiment of a 2 hour anxiety attack. I had never felt so tense and uncomfortable in a theater before. Amazing performances around.

I’m not really religious either so that’s why I never really watch religious movies but when I watched it a couple years ago…oooo everyone pissed me off! I love you have another Earth and God in their house which represented the world and everyone coming in only to disrespect and destroy it. The couple in the beginning representing Adam and Eve and their sons were Cain and Abel (I researched this movie a bit after 😅) that scene with the baby..and they beat up Mother..so brutal it was also to handle 🫠

I saw this in theatres when it came out and up to that point it was the most stressful (and still is) movies I’ve ever seen. As a huge introvert, this is one of my biggest nightmares, people coming into your home and touching EVERYTHING and making a shit load of messes, fuckkkk that. I personally think this in Jennifer Lawrence’s best performances. Her screaming in this is embedded into my brain forever. Now somehow this movie has became a comfort movie for me for some odd reason😅 I wish I could watch this one again in the theatre for the first time!

There are definitely a lot of religious themes in this film specifically when those two brothers are in the fighting In the house and one kills the other it’s supposed to symbolize the fight between Kane and Abel , where one brother killed the other in the Bible

I went in blind watching this movie for the first time. The religious metaphors went right over my head and my experience was pure anxiety. After reading the Mother Earth/ Father God analysis, I was extra upset. This film is horrorific!

I barely like ppl I know and love coming over when invited the hell if I’m going to have ppl just rolling in that I don’t know! I would be physically fight all of them. Alright, here’s the whole explanation. Jennifer Lawrence represents Mother Nature & the Virgin Mary (the mother of Jesus), Javier Bardem represents God, the house represents earth. We first see the first person that enters the house (earth) is a man, this is Adam, when he’s in the bathroom he has a cut on his side of his torso where his rib was taken which is why Eve enters later just like in the Bible where God takes part of Adam’s rib to create Eve. The room with the glass represents the forbidden garden with the forbidden fruit. Adam & Eve both create the first sin by disrespecting God’s one rule by breaking the crystal heart which represents the forbidden fruit. Then enter Cain & Abel, they create the next sin, the sin that is taking another life. Just like in the Bible Cain kills Abel out of greed. We see the population grow after that with more & more people coming into existence into the earth until it’s extremely over populated towards the end. The people destroy the house (earth) repeatedly just like irl. We the audience are wondering why they aren’t kicked out but it represents us & how we treat the earth & yet Mother Nature doesn’t kick us all out either. The story that God has been looking to finally create represents the Bible. The baby represents Jesus, because the Virgin Mary had God’s child despite her being a virgin which is why he creates him with Mother Nature. The baby is innocent when it dies just as Jesus was when he died for our sins. We see how when the population grew it had gotten more chaotic, from simple conversations to wars, how quickly it turned to violence & people getting executed exactly like irl how quickly humans went to going to war with each other when the population got bigger. We also see Mother Nature stumble upon a gate holding only women inside which represents how much women have went through back then & how they were forced into a corner. Jesus then dies & they eat his body & drink is blood just like the body of Christ (bread eating) & blood of Christ (wine drinking) that happens in church. Then we reach the new Jerusalem theory that when the earth end that it’ll restart. We see that God’s reasoning for people being bad was the earth’s fault & Mother Nature’s for not being perfect enough for humans & so he replaces the women like many men irl think that the women are the problem & need to be fixed & changed in many situations when in actuality it was the humans’ fault not the earth or Mother Nature. So it then ends in a unstoppable cycle that never ends as God fixes the woman/earth/mother natures every time until he gets it right. I absolutely hated this movie the first 3 times I saw it but loved it by the 4th time & have now seen it at least 19 times & never gets bored of it because there are so many Easter eggs & hidden references that I pick up almost every time, it’s such a fascinating movie & a masterpiece imo. As a Christian, it’s just so interesting seeing this pov. I absolutely love this movie.

iirc, the director said something like... it's a metaphor for ecological destruction, but with a biblical tilt. Also, this movie gave me an anxiety attack the first time i watched it! I'm extremely sensitive about my privacy and personal boundaries, so it got me really bad. I'm glad I didn't see it in the theater. But! It's one of my favorite movies.

This movie pissed me off so much the way people just kept barging in their home and how dismissive Javier was to Jennifer. I had to pause it to read about what the hell was going on. Once I read what it was about I liked it. Still pissed me off though.

Mother was my first psychological horror movie. I never watch much horror back then. This psychological one really...I remember watching it and through out I felt so uncomfortable and my heart woudn't stop beating loudly from fear. I never understood the piont of the whole plot back then and the firt time watching the movie was also the last because it was that disturbing to me, until today 😅. The comment section helped me explain this movie and it was really interesting. I'm gonna watch the reaction of Nick now and refresh the trauma I felt when I watch the movie 😂.

personally I interpret the story he wrote as a story of him and someone (the reader) being the way in which with him the world is created from devastation to perfection (the burnt world to the green world) which if you take the fact that we create our world around us and within us through our consciousness/brain, then we do create the world with the great beyond/God, our creator, that would be inspirational to anyone, and why people would fight over who had that connection with God/creator/great beyond/ and lead to factions, wars, battles, and a need to consume something to hold onto the reality you created. Not that I'm saying this justifies their behaviour or treatment of the house (Earth) and mother, and her child. But that's my symbolic reading of it.
