Most people with serious mental issues are totally fine, bit unsettling at times, but no more threat than anyone else. As we learn this we shouldn't forget some are not.
There are processes around letting a service know you are not happy, such as making a formal complaint, if you feel your concerns are not being heard. I don’t think emailing a psychiatrist is appropriate, and this takes time away from other patients who are an immediate danger to themselves or others and require sectioning by the psychiatrist. You do need to involve the police if you feel you are in immediate danger, or that the person themself is. Unfortunately, the mental health team will be limited in what they can do if they do not see your son to be a danger to himself or others, and if he’s not under a treatment order or if he’s deemed to have capacity. We can’t predict the future, but you need to make sensible decisions for your own safety if you truly think your life is in danger.
It's the previous Conservative government's fault for underfunding and cutting the budgets of the NHS and NHS mental health services severely for the last 14 years, meaning mentally ill people didn't get the care and help they needed. Hopefully the new Labour government can fund the NHS mental health services properly again.
The government giving patients "more control", this is the problem to start with. The legal framework stops police and medical services from treating these people against their will, which is what it takes when they are this out of control. Additionally there is no spaces for these ppl, all older style "asylums" have been shut down and now there is nowhere for this care to be undertaken. If mentally unwell ppl are a dangerous to others and refuse treatment there should be less choice for them instead if anything.
@@Wishing_you_peace exactly, it takes massive resources and support when difficult choices are needed like treating people against their will which rarely but truly is required in certain situations. The government sound bites of "giving patients more control" is just spin which helps nobody.
...there is a legal framework of the Mental Health Act, where patients who are a danger to themselves or others are detained and treated compulsorily. Types of section vary from hours to months depending on the person's needs. However (as someone with experience of the system).Mental Health has been run into the ground in recent years, beds cut, services under huge pressure, I can only think that this is why these terrible mistakes are being made. It's completely unacceptable for all people in need of Mental health care.
I was a student nurse on placement in a long stay psychiatric ward in the late 80's when a news report came on TV about "Care in the Community." I looked around the room and thought thought how none of the people there would manage. Now nearly 40 years on they just pretend people do.
