Mother Gothel's NEW Full Story! | The Sundrop's Evil Guardian: Discovering Tangled

Today we are revisiting the full story of Mother Gothel to combine every video I’ve made on her, everything we know about her from the feature and the series, so we can all finally understand where she came from, who she was, and what her impact was in Rapunzel’s world. Tangled The Series alluded to massive developments of her backstory, and that I previously discussed in Mother Gothel’s backstory and in my explanation as to how Gothel discovered the healing incantation. Is Gothel a witch? Is she a demon? What is her connection to the sundrop’s golden flower? I’m going to answer all of these questions as we go through all of Tangled’s canon.

Isn’t it ironic that Gothel wanted people to love her, and yet, here she had a loving daughter, but resented her? It may not have been the kind of attention she wanted, but Gothel could’ve had the admiration of Cassandra, and yet she tossed her aside.

I can understand that cassandra betraying rapunzel because she blames her for taking away her mother's love and wanting be more popular and famous than she is. But she's pined this on the wrong person. If there's anyone to blame it's gothel. Because she never cared about her or rapunzel she only cared about sundrop flower that gives her youth and beauty. We're all for living longer but not at cost of others lives.

One of the reasons Mother Gothel is so interesting is her desires and motivation. Mother Gothel is different from the Disney/Pixar villains I grew up watching. She doesn't crave power, fame, riches, or revenge. She simply wants to be young and beautiful forever. Vanity is such a powerful and realistic vice for anyone to have and I like how it was portrayed through her character.

You are right, because she's different than the other villains for evil does come in all shapes and sizes with every villain's reasons to have thier goals like Gaston wants Belle for her hand in marriage due to his popularity at his home in the village with the townspeople.

What makes Gothel such a powerful and compelling villain in the Disneyverse is that she represents an evil that is very real. Sure, we may not have actual sorcerers who can survive for centuries, but narcissists and emotional abusers are very prevalent in the world. And any kid watching this can now see for the first time that this behavior isn’t normal. It’s harmful and abusive. Tangled as a whole is criminally underrated but Gothel is truly one of the darkest villains Disney has ever created. Great job breaking this down, Isaac! I never get sick of fangirling over Tangled so you just keep that content coming 😁

StarViewer68 Gothel for sure. Tremaine never bothered to pretend to care about Cinderella. While both princesses had an awful childhood, Gothel completely twisted the meaning of love for Rapunzel by framing her actions as those of a protective mother. Rapunzel will have to do a lot of mental work to break the association of those behaviors with caring in her mind. And it’ll likely affect her relationships with people for years to come. That’s what makes emotional abuse so damn sinister.

Skylar Griego You have a point. But by Tremaine showing her resent for Cinderella for her whole life. Made her a slave in her own house and abused her emotionally and psychology wise. (maybe even physically ) throughout the movie you can see Cinderella’s fear of tremaine. You got a point because Gothel lied to her but she didn’t abused her during her childhood

I LOVED Tangled the Series, especially learning more about Mother Gothel and her back story. It's a shame she didn't care very much for Cassandra, but isn't it ironic that she had a child and then kidnapped another so she already knew how to raise a baby, even though she only used both girls for her desires? Yes, she gives them nice things, but only to get what she wants. That's evil, but for a Disney villain, fascinating that they would make a villain like that. That amazes me as well as the fact that Rapunzel remains bright and cheery once she escapes, remembering her childhood. She is affected by it, she even tells her father that he is not the first person to lie and keep her hidden away when her golden hair comes back and she is hurt because of this, but she is still kind and optimistic. Cass on the other hand is bent on impressing others, upset when she's assigned to be Rapunzel's lady in waiting, although they eventually become friends, but she's still focused on improving her status, training and fighting, and pleasing others as well as herself. These attributes are a result of being raised by Mother Gothel

I still believe the only reason Gothel had Cass was to eventually transfer her soul into Cass' body, only using the flower until she figured out how to do it. When the flower was stolen and Rapunzel was born, she had to change her plans.

This is perfect! You hit every point with Gothel, and I especially love that you brought up why she despises Cassandra. I imagined the same thing, that it was because Cassandra was a burden and was holding Gothel back in life. "Magic makes people feel too powerful, too entitled, it makes them think that they can defy the will of a king". Personally I think that both Elsa and her grandfather were wrong about magic users in that MOST are good, but SOME are bad and when they are bad things get ugly. Power can corrupt anyone and the King himself was no exception.

I mean even kings who do understand that most magic users are good might be wary of a magic kingdom as fights between magic users can have a lot of collateral damage and a magic criminal from that kingdom could head to his kingdom unchallenged.

i totally agree with you on how mother gothel is a realistic vilian. people dont watch disney for bad people in real life. we watch for vilians like hades, bill cipher and oogie boogie. all of them aware of what they are and dont try to hide it.

Mother Gothel seems to age quickly in the series. I get leading the guards to her cottage let her cut the rope bridge trapping them , but it also allowed someone to take Cassandra somewhere safe rather than leaving her alone,. Does anybody think Gothel wanted her daughter to be found before truly abandoning her ?

This was an epic full story, Isaac. It's so cool how you basically gathered parts of all of your Gothel videos to create one entire story for the character. When I first watched the movie Tangled as a kid, I already knew that Gothel was a selfish and vain woman, but after all of this information we've learned about her, she's pretty much worse than we thought, especially the fact that she abandoned her own child in order to kidnap a royal child. I think you should do Rapunzel or Eugene's Full Story sometime in the future.

Mother gothel is seriously one of my favorite Disney villans. Although I feel like of she really never wanted Rapunzel to find out that she was the lost princess that she could have changed her birthday. That way for Rapunzel, she'd just think that one day a year people could release the lanterns and mother gothel just tell her that it was a special holiday or something and she most likely wouldn't think nothing of it. Buttttttt she didn't do that and let Rapunzel just kinda find it out.

There are theories that Maui when he like grabbed the sun (I don't remember what happened) that a drop of the sun fell and there's another theory that when Hercules decided to stay mortal with Meg that when he died the flower grew where he died because he got called the sun a lot by Zeus and others.

Thinking about it I think there may be something else to Gothel's motivations after turning her back on Zhan Tiri. Gothel had Rapunzel convinced that there were people out there who would want her magic hair and then when Gothel sees Rapunzel is gone from the tower she appears to be truly afraid of what might have happened. I think a large part of Gothel's motivations was a fear of retaliation from either Sugracha and Tromus or worse, the returned Zhan Tiri herself. It would even explain why Gothel bothered keep Cassandra and to return to the cottage at all after taking baby Rapunzel, not because she really cared about Cassandra but she probably wanted to keep her hidden because she is indisputable evidence that Gothel had obviously been keeping and using the sun drop for herself. Doesn't seem like a stretch to imagine if Zhan Tiri, or even just Sugracha and Tromus could have gotten the chance to confront her, that Gothel would have been in seriously hot water for her actions.

With what we know about Cassandra and her relations to her biological? mother, Gothel i can't help but wonder who her father is and how Gothel took the time to start a family despite her quest for immortality. another question, was Gothel ever married? i feel like she would've been at some point for Cassandra to come around then ditch her husband and kept Cass for slave purposes.

You know one thing that I've been questioning is if Cassandra having her mother run away seemed to be a dramatic event for her (which it obviouse) how does she not remember anything? You do remember traumatic events

Maybe Cassandra was REALLY young and before her mother ran away,she must've been placed with another family and then later sent to an orphanage,and thus-she couldn't have had any other memories of her from that part of her life onwards and had forgot that she had a mother then,apparently-as I can try to tell,unfortunately..?

Trauma is very complicated and every individual reacts differently to it o: Some people suppress traumatic events to protect their mental health and some can see their trauma wherever they go... You definitely can suppress trauma and forget about it, it is very reasonable ;-;

Kinda weird to say, but I wish they made Rapunzel’s trauma more evident in the series. She was kidnapped and isolated from the outside world for 18 years, emotionally, mentally (and eventually physically) abused by her only mother figure, watched her first human friend die... Yet she’s so cheerful and confident in the series. I know people respond differently to trauma, but it’s almost abnormal how caveliar she is. But I suppose it’s for kids, so that’s why (even though you can show trauma in a subtle, kid-friendly way that they can still understand when they’re older.)

As I said in a different video, I believe Gothel may have found a man to love, but he abandoned her when he found out she was pregnant, just got her to sleep with him, or found out how old she really was. And that might be a reason she hates Cassandra. It reminds her of the only time she opened her heart and it was broken.

Everyone hates Hans and MG. That is bc they are real. All other are evil from very start and they are monsters. But Hans and MG are first good and do everything for people they "love". That is why it hurts so much when they turn their real sides. All other disney villans you can't conect to real life, but those two are with us every day... don't know if you got me..😂

Mother Gathel (MG) is the spitting image in personality to what real people are sometimes be them male or female. That is why I think MG is one of the best done "villain's". All you need to do is open your eyes and keep your mouth closed and look around and you can find MG right next to you. Is MG a little over the top, I don't think so. She is spot on how some people are. I love villains that are more then evil for the sake of evil. I love how Tangled the series filled in a lot of the "plot" holes of the movie. There is so much to love in this show.

Yes. At the end of the tangled the series movie we see a hand come out of the ground next to the tower. It’s believed to be mother gothel but we never see this hand again in the tv show

I still think Gothel was the Evil Queen from Snow White at some point after Demanitus sealed Sugaracha and drove both Gothel and Tromus into hiding. That's probably how she protected herself from Demanitus and received the praise and attention she felt she deserved for her beauty. After things went south for her at the end of Snow White and she was stuck as an old, ugly biddie unable to reach her spells and potions at the castle, she was forced to go out and find the Sundrop to save herself. And the rest we all know from Tangled and its series... Still, Mother Gothel is one of the Disney Villains that really hits home with a lot of us. Especially those in real life that have the unpleasant experience of having abusive parents like that narcissistic devil woman... 😢

I LOVE THE WORLD OF TANGELD ( i still cant deside which is better movie or show?) My favorite charekter is varian and first i didnt ackshuely like him ( i wacht season 3 before season 1) i first think thet his a wierdo but then when i wacht the episode over and over again i startet to like him and now i love him and i like your vids on Varians conecshon to the moonstone that is my favorite ok bye

I wouldn't basically that the interesting of Mother Gothel wasn't right. In the movie, she is a Antagonist character while in the series, she is a supporting character when Zhan Tiri when she is a True Villain of the Tangled Story. Basically, it's true for all consequences.

I feel like she also despised Cassandra because it’s her fear of becoming old and not beautiful anymore personified. Cassandra was a forever reminder that Gothel was getting old, especially without the Sundrop. And when the Sundrop became a person, Rapunzel, she abandoned Cassandra, her burden and reminder. Gothel definitely favored Rapunzel over Cassandra ONLY because she was the Sundrop.

Maybe the reason she turned her to good and became a follower of Zantiri was because of a heartbreak.. maybe the man she loved and got her pregnant left her caused her to loose hope in goodness and helping. That could also explain why she hated Cassandra..because she reminded her her of her long lost love and heartbreak thatcxpuld have caused her major confidence problems and trust issues. If she could see it in another way she could have just visit the royal family, nicely explain that she had some rights to the flower as she first found it and let her live in the castle and benefit of its power without kidnapping Rapunzel..she could have even have turned to be her nanny.. with her daughter being friends with Rapunzel ..

Whenever Gothel is showing "affection" to Rapunzel, she always has to touch her hair. Whereas Eugene always moves the hair out of Rap's face. I didn't catch this subtle nod until I had it pointed out to me.

Definitely increases the all out Hate I have for Gothel. Selfish, vain, all sorts of terrible things should be a mental disorder named after her mother Gothel syndrome or whatever for those who treat children and others the way Gothel did. Not really people but pawns to fore fill their desires and whims also not willing to let go of them for any reason. Seeing Zhan Tiri mockingly say "Just like your mother" probably says that she did know Gothel and is probably angry about Gothel's betrayal also glad Rapunzel and Eugene finished her the way they did, more merciful than what Zhan Tiri would have done

Gothel is just the worst! What I only discovered, after watching the movie a few times is that a) Gothel never kisses Rapunzel, just her hair, b) Gothel always pushes Rapunzels her into her face, while Eugene pushes it out of her face and c) Gothel's bedroom has a door, Rapunzel's doesn't. It only has a courtain. Gothel is able to lock Rapunzel out at any time, but Rapunzel isn't able to lock her out. d) Gothel makes Rapunzel run towards her to hug her, while Ariana hugs her first.

I know this sounds crazy but I think maui is the reason why the Sundrop and moon stone are in corona he said in his song thank you that he caught the song and longer the days , if you look at Moana’s island 🌴 there are tons of Sundrop flowers there maybe he caught the moon too? Or it tried to intervene. I’m not too sure I’ve heard this before that’s just my opinion 😊

In going down the rabbit hole of what's left unsaid, I started thinking: Did anyone ever actually refer to Mother Gothel by her name in the movie? How would Eugene even know it, let alone anyone else? Weren't all the people that would know her be dead by then? I haven't watched the series, so if this is explained there, let me know...

I’m curious on what she planned to do, Rapunzel as we see can age meaning she should be able to die we haven’t seen her heal herself with the magic and it seems like she can’t so she can’t make herself younger meaning when Rapunzel would inevitably die so would mother gothel because where would the magic of the sun drop go??? If Rapunzel stayed and never left then she would have grown old and died??? How would mother gotel have lived forever if Rapunzel could still die???

Why didn't mother gothel move far away with Rapunzel where she would never be found or tempted to venture out. Sometime I do wish the not so evil bad guys (e.g mother gothel) win compared to the real evil bad guys(Zhan tiri)
