@FullmetalGirl94

I honestly think it was on purpose. In the original fairy tale, Rapunzel did get pregnant (she was too naive to realize the consequences of sex) and thrown out of the tower by the witch.
@caitlinbrewer4843
@caitlinbrewer4843 6 лет назад
Exactly! Also the line from the original vision of this about Rapunzel get chubby is a reference to how in some tellings of the fairytale Gothel figures about about the Prince because he got Rapunzel pregnant and her dresses got tight.

Wow, your right! At the beginning she says "trust me pet, mother knows best". Then she says "skip the drama stay with mama", implying rapunzel is being dramatic. Then "mother knows best, take it from your mumsy. On your own you won't survive" and proceeds to insult her looks and her personality. Then she says "don't forget it, you'll regret it" basically threatening her??? And in this song she outright calls her a dummy.

It reminds me so much of my mother it throws me each time. The voice, the body language, the facial expressions- this is what emotionally abusive parents can actually look like (sans the musical). And as much as some people laugh about the concept of emotional abuse, it's often the tip of the iceberg as so the speak and the parent is quite willing to get physically abusive if they think it 'necessary'. Besides, no one should have to spend their whole childhood with that.
@akaneh1989
@akaneh1989 9 лет назад
The worst thing is, given that Flynn and Rapunzel only met like 2-3 days before (not exactly sure but it was three at tops) by this point and Flynn was the first man Rapunzel met, he COULD have still been only after the crown when Mother Gothel gives it back to her. I know he wasn't, I know he genuinely grew to care about and love Rapunzel, but that was their luck. I also know Mother Gothel is a manupilative bitch who was exaggerating the dangers of the outside world to keep her in, making her worse than many things she could have encountered outside (not to mention if she had just left Rapunzel with her real parents, *she wouldn't have had to fear anything*), but that doesn't mean there were NO bad things outside of that tower. Rapunzel's story went well party because she had Flynn and Max, and partly because her personality attracts people and makes ner extremely likeable (thus reducing the chance of anyone being willing to actually hurt her).

Yeah, the "look at you, you think he's impressed?" hurts more than any insults because mother gothel is leaving it to Rapunzel's imagination and the years of abuse to let her know why Eugene wouldn't be impressed, instead of giving her clear reasons. It just makes her feel like she doesn't have anything good about her.

Gothel does NOT like the word no! Tangled: "No!? Oh...I see how it is." Into The Woods: "No...? You're so nice. You're not good, you're not bad, you're just NICE!" These similarities between both iterations of Gothel are amazing, especially if it was coincidental.

And nobody here is discussing that she called her daughter demented over liking a guy????
@jaimeegaynor3030
@jaimeegaynor3030 6 лет назад
Blurbyy that she met like a day or two ago... I mean, she was locked up in a tower by a manipulative b1tch who was using her for her hair, but the girl ran away from a safe tower into a world she knew nothing about (tho that is partially gothel's fault, and you can't blame rapunzel for wanting freedom) with a stranger who's a known thief! Realistically, if this wasn't a Disney movie, she probably would've had a much worse time. If things were accurate historically and realistically, she probably wouldn't have had the happy love story we see here. Even the original story wasn't like this. In the original she meets "the king's son", takes one look at him and agrees to be his wife... like WHAT?!?! (She JUST met him!!!) So if you think about it with the knowledge of the original story, historical and realistic views, and just overall how it looks that she ran away with a guy she JUST MET who's a wanted criminal that broke into her tower... I mean.... it's kind of insane. Yeah, mother gothel doesn't really care about her, but the points stand.
@madisonbrooks5793
@madisonbrooks5793 5 лет назад
Mother Gothel's emotional abuse is bad from the start, but parental abuse is so common and celebrated nowadays that it's hard for people to pick up on it, so it's extremely hard to write it subtly-it'll either go over their heads, or they'll side with the parent unless explicitly told to do otherwise by the movie/book/etc. The way Gothel was written was pretty cool, her abuse is relatively realistic and even sometimes subtle. Most of the things she says don't sound "that bad" to most people, but when you throw some even harsher words into the mix every now and then like "demented", it makes you think about her words in a different light, in a subtle, clever way. Basically it's writers using specific words to pull the puppet strings of not only your emotions, but your thought process.

That's the idea. She's got Rapunzel so gaslit that using a word like "demented" doesn't make her bat an eye. This absolutely is how parents get their kids to do things. Emotional manipulation. It helps if there's religion involved, then you use religious manipulation. But this movie obviously didn't talk about religion.

This song is one of my favorite parts of the whole movie. It's positively theatrical. The way she belts every word and twirls her cape dramatically. Almost like the witch in Into the Woods. How Gothel confronts Rapunzel in the forest, catches her off guard, and makes her think that this person she likes couldn't possibly like her back. Kind of reminds me of Last Midnight. And then it turns out her whole point that Eugene will leave her immediately for the crown is completely and totally inaccurate. That is pretty fantastic. It makes all this melodrama all the more worth it here as she's trying to overly build up her case with passion rather than any appeal to what Rapunzel knows Eugene to be like.

I’m sure, the composer of Tangled was inspired by “A Boy Like That” for this reprise. The 2021 adaptation of West Side Story is a pure masterpiece. Hope more high budget live-action musicals will be produced after this one. The crown metaphor of virginity also blows my mind.

Ok, I know everyone says that Lady Tremaine is the most intimidating Disney villa, but I think Mother Gothel is terrifying. She doesn't do anything violent aside from stabbing Eugene, but her presence reminds me of self hatred. She's that voice that drags you down and threatens you for believing that you have worth and can be loved by others. While I think Rapunzel's dialogue is a bit corny when she stands up to herself in the end, I also see it as a way to tell that voice to shut up. 🤣Maybe she was too angry to think of just quietly sneaking away.

A toxic song of manipulative parents taking control from their children's life that they have no right over and stunting their growth in the process
@xxmidnightbunxx6885
@xxmidnightbunxx6885 4 года назад
madison brooks I’m not going to say the song isn’t manipulative or “toxic,” but I will say this: a parent does have the right to take control over their child’s life in MANY cases. What? You think children should get to choose everything just because they’re in their teenage years? No, that’s stupid. Sure, it’s “a part of growing up,” but there’s no reason to always make them grow up through experience. Some people are stupid and focus on feelings, which is when they DO NEED the experience. However, many are smart enough to be able to know things about relationships, and other things, without it. Rapunzel is relatively stupid. Brave? Yes, but she’s naive and that takes a blow to her ability to choose things. And aside from this in particular, parents have the right to control many aspects of a child’s life, ethically and LEGALLY. Whether you think so or not, a child is an investment. “But if you love them it’s not!” Well, yes it is. Children cost money and money needs to be earned. Why would a parent want all their hard work and money to be thrown away because their child made a stupid mistake? Everyone gets mad at the parents for being angry, “Oh, they’re so young! They’re just learning and growing and-“ blah, blah, BLAH. They should be mad at the child, and when the parents are TOO understanding, that’s when you should be mad at the parents, too. If there’s a disability, mentality or physically, that was responsible for the mistake, than that’s when the parent’s shouldn’t be mad at the child. Parents are completely misunderstood by EVERYONE, even OTHER PARENTS and PAST PARENTS. It’s not easy to take care of a little runt for even a day, imagine +18 years of a stupid meat sack running around, saying they always know better just because they’re “growing.” I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be allowed to grow or anything, but when it gives damage to the parents or anyone else, including themselves, it’s not okay, at all. Parents have the right to say no and take control LEGALLY until about 18 years if there’s no unusual circumstances like a disability. Just because this generation is ALL about entitlement and “being different” and “growing” doesn’t mean that it’s okay. In kids shows nowadays, and even before, the “good guys” get away with illegal activity just because they’re “growing” and all that other crap. And then people start to say that it’s wrong to stereotype and have certain beliefs, but stereotypes are our brain’s way of explaining things with limited information and religion is simply a coping mechanism that people also used to control people. It’s not wrong as long as we aren’t ignorant.

Its crazy thinking that the crown could mean her virginity since in the original story she locked rapunzel in that tower at the age of 12 to keep her pure and virginal not because she was a princess. The prince came because he heard her singing and spied to find how to get up there and once rapunzel met him he convinced her to befriend and bed him and he visited often since they couldn't find a way out of the tower.

It isn't just her voice. I heard a cover by someone who actually sounds a lot like her, but she never could hit the same heights as this song. Why? because this voice actress/singer is also able to just insert so much emotion and intent into her singing. It is why this might never be topped... At least in English.

ya know the more I listen to this and think about the song's message? While the song is intended to be about a selfish woman pretending to care about her prisoner, it can also represent the voices in our minds telling us we're no good or ugly which isn't true it by any means. this song can actually speak to people who have self-hatred issues, even though there's no reason for this self-anger or hate, other than they think they don't fit in. Thier own insecurities kind of manifest themselves into whatever the person thinks of in the moment of hating themselves. In this case? the voice that is made by our insecurities is, at first, a caring and nurturing person who the sufferer feels they can trust but when the sufferer realizes that this hateful voice who acts like it cares is wrong (and it is!)? This voice immediately turns angry and tries to put the blame of a failed attempted for a happier life on the person struggling for a better way to live. In the end? Much like Rapunzel, it's up to the victim and the friends and allies of this victim to show them: they aren't alone, they are loved, and that they are beautiful.

All of these comments trying to justify Gothel’s emotional abusive behaviour with “a guy leaving her” 😩. No, she’s manipulating Rapunzel into staying by twisting her words and creating a scenario in order to make her stay, basically gaslighting. Please, Mother Gothel is an abuser not some “mom” trying to protect her child.

1:01 This part of this song leaves me with a fan theory. What if mother Gothal had a boyfriend but he left her for jewelry? Listen closely to what she says. And maybe the other reason why she wants Rapunzel to give her beauty and youth, he must've died since it's been centuries and she doesn't want to join him...
@nisio7320
@nisio7320 3 года назад
I know this was 9 months ago, so sorry in advance. But I think she's really just a nasty person who's trying to convince Rapunzel that he must be after the crown, since no one could possibly like her for her. "The outside world is a scary place, the only person you can trust to have your best interests at heart is me." Everything she does over the course of the movie is in service of manipulating Rapunzel into believing this idea. She isn't projecting her own issues onto Rapunzel, she's actively and consciously trying to deceive and control her.

I mean it could of been. Gother may of kept Rapunzel just for her hair. But she’s actually a smart parent. She tricks her child into thinking that if she leaves she’ll hurt her and herself. And when after she ran away and escaped and gother found her that’s exactly what happened. Gother sang in a hurt way so Rapunzul can realize the mistake she did. And it kinda worked. You can hear the guilt in Rapunzul’s voice in the end. Call it cruel and manipulative but that’s a way a lot of parents use in real life to discipline their children and sometimes you just have to use it to protect them. Ofc Here Gother didn’t have to use it, she used it for the wrong reasons.

Another Miraculous fan?! :D Hey! You're right! But about which girl would Gabriel sing? Marinette? Ladybug? The other girl characters don't make sense to sing about. Gabriel has Lila as an ally now, Chloé is no problem these days and Adrien really isn't interested in her, Kagami is one that Gabriel seems to not be against, but Marinette and Ladybug make perfect sense. He sees Mari as a bad influence ;-; And Ladybug is his enemy as Hawkmoth. And Adrien has a crush on both of them.
