My take on this song is that Ana is the one singing about her past wishing she could go back to her old self. Thinking of the way things were before she started struggling with self harm and suicidal thoughts (slit my wrists and watch the blood evaporate). Thinking about her previous suicide attempt (you were the angel I couldn’t kill) while about to end her life (I’ll fake god today, hop on a cloud and watch the world decay).

My personal interpretation for this song is someone trying to get out of anorexia, which makes sense to me since it’s also called ana. “Ana baby, I’m not crazy” is the person trying to convince themselves their mental state is fine, while it’s not. The “I’ll play god” bit symbolizes finally getting a hold of it and managing to recover, and feeling godly in your own body.

“Oh ana I will be with you still, you’re the angel I couldn’t kill”… Ana, please get out of my head, you’re slowly killing me. Stop making me feel guilty all the time.

I feel like there's a whole hidden story in mothermother's songs and I'm trying to piece it together. So far I got Hayloft, Arms tonight then hayloft 2

I relate to this so well, I dated this girl Ana, loved her so much. But I did have to break up with her at some point, turns out she wasn't doing the best and, that was all it took to push her over the edge. I felt so much regret over it and several times considered joining her. Ana was the angel I could never kill. I've listened to this song on repeat for ages, and it's just not getting old.

Theory: I think that "Ana" is her past self, "You're the angel that I couldn't kill" we know she couldn't kill Ana but who she could kil? The people around her, now I don't mean it as in killing killing, as in getting rid, she doesn't need anyone, she needs Ana back, she wants Ana back, she knows she can't kill her past self, she'll be always in her "I'll be with you still" "You're the angel I couldn't kill" she has no choice but to be with what's left of Ana, so she tries so hard to become her again to not be just a shadow of who Ana was. "I'll be god" changes to "I'll fake god" she recognizes that she isn't in control and that she never was, she thought she was, but now she only has fakery left. She thought she choose hurting hersef and that she could stop anytime, "being this godly can't be good for Ana's safety" even when we know that won't go away it doesnt feel like it "Ana hear me" she thinks that she's loosing her everytime she cuts her skin, Ana is good, Ana doesn't harm herself. I think that she does loose Ana, but she doesn't accept it, after all Ana lives in her so how could she die? She repeats to herself that Ana is the angel that she couldn't kill bc even when she wanted to kill her she didn't want her gone and now that she is, she's faking god and denying it. I'm sleep deprived so Xp, this is just a theory so feel free to disagree or agree. I also think that Ana is her public image or how people (used to) see her, anyway I'll try to sleep wish me luck

Everyone talking about how hayloft and how this song plays into the whole murder thing, but one thing i haven't seen much (there are a few comments about this) is that they specifically used "Ana" and not the more common "Anna." Ana, from what i've seen is a common shortening for anorexia. "The angel I couldn't kill" is probably a metaphor for not being able to completely conquer their eating disorder.

i actually came up with a theory about what this song means. TW's coming!!! i think it's about a toxic & abusive relationship???? they are singing about both pov's. (ana and her partner) the "i'll fake god" part might be about them faking a happy and healthy relationship "you are the angel that u couldn't kill" must mean that ana's partner loves abusing her, that's why they can't kill her. (im using they since ion wanna assume genders but anyways) ana was depressed. so she self harmed. "playing this god can't be good for ana's safety" must be ana's pov... that faking a healthy relationship still won't be good enough to keep her safe. ana wanted to kill her partner, but ended up drowning in the bathtub instead. AND UH JUST SOMETHING I WANTED TO ADD "oh ana, i'll be with you still" might be ana's partner's pov. might mean they kept her body or something

This is sad because I used to have ex-friend named Anna and she was toxic and fake but then I moved to a different place and I don't see her anymore so that's good. Yeah but she ended up giving me a lot of depression, anxiety, social anxiety, and self doubt and I just can't get rid of it all so ye. Also I never really had any real friends growing up just some people I would hang out with for one year and then go to another group the next year and it was like that all my life until I met Anna and I was scared to leave her side because I thought that I would have no friends and be alone but even though I thought she was my friend I still felt lonely around her so ye and now that feeling just lingers in my head.
