I just slapped myself the forehead while watching your video! Thank you for making it. I’ve owned a chimney charcoal starter for many, many years, but never thought of turning it into a hobo stove. I like the fork-handle hack too. Nicely done.
I would modify it with kanthal wire handle ru-vid.comg_m2LNOg5zA?feature=share With the fire going flat out you'll still be able to pick up the fire and transfer it to a snuff pot
" If you put a stainless steel steamer insert ( opens like a flower) in the bottom you can use wood pellets, which give a clean, controlled burn. Also keeps ashes from falling out and reduces airflow, which is only needed for charcoal burns. The fork/ handle idea is genius. "
Amazing. Never thought of using mine like that. Usually use mine to start charcoal for my griles. The things we learn. Ol dogs learn new tricks. 83 year old camper.
Modification suggestion: Don't cut a fuel feed window; it is getting too much air now. Instead, make another fork-handle on the top griddle (wire grid), and lift it when needed and drop wood into the top. As said previously, it is getting too much air and burning the fuel too fast. Close "some" of the air holes or create a metal slide that covers the holes after the fire is well established.
I have been using one like that for a couple years now i haven’t cut a side hole yet but it cooks very well thanks for sharing I really like your videos lots of great info
Ingenious! On the hobo and also the handle for the pot! I have pots like that and was racking my brain thinking 🤔 of something I could use...now thx to you I have it fixed! Tfs. Blessings from your newest sub. Take care, Nikki.
Great idea! I was thinking to get me one of those charcoal starters, too, having the same idea as you. But due to the pandemic I was not able to get to the hardware store until now. So it still is the "huge dogfood can with handcut holes" - stove until I can make it. The dogfood can is working great, btw. Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed. Greetings from Germany!
Excellent! Nice repurposing! Great example of adapt and overcome! Good job my friend 👌🏽 thank you for your kind wishes! Wishing you health and happiness too! Take care 👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽😎
Thanks very much friend! Glad you liked it! Yep definitely agree especially at the moment with all the uncertainty that’s going on! Hope your having a good weekend! Best wishes 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Fantastic idea MD👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 ....many times ive seen friends use these to start their grill for BBQ and thought...hobo stove!! After this video, Next time i see 1 at the store, i may not pass it by Thanka for another great video! And a terrific idea 👍🏼👍🏼 Hope ya have a spot on weekend 👍🏼😎🔥🔥🔥👍🏼😎🔥🔥
Thanks again Dee ! Yep it’s just the job for camp cooking! I’m pleased with it and I’ll definitely be using it quite a bit! Hope your weekend is going great too sister! Best wishes my friend! 👍🏽👍🏽😘🍻
great hobo stove , i use one for my charcoal grill as a starter and it gets glowing orange inside , it will cook things on minutes ! cool pot handle idea ! atb john
Brilliant for camping out back or from a vehicle. For bigger pots you could always knock up a tripod. Good gauge metal too, well worth the price and an excellent re-purpose.
I'm now a sub because I have seen and experienced this exact thing...A Charcoal Chimney Starter as a HoBo Stove...and I thought I was the only one...lol. well you got it going on Brother...It works and I have now got to shoot my video and give to a credit because as far as I can see ...YOU are the first to post this...well maybe not but you're the first I saw of doing this on video!...lol.
Thanks brother! No need to give me any credit mate I was only doing what felt right to me lol.... I appreciate your subscribing to my channel thank you ! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks along the same lines too! Maybe I’m not so crazy after all😂😂👍🏽👍🏽 Best wishes friend 😎🍻
I have 2 different sizes 1 like you are using an one about half that size an they work great I like using hickory or ash hardwood once My fire dies down I never have worry bout adding wood it will cook about anything I want great video I always enjoy your videos glad you put this on RU-vid for everyone to know about
Thanks! Yep it’s a great little stove set up, I enjoy using them! Kind of you to say so my friend! I appreciate your support 👍🏽👍🏽😎 best wishes for the new year! 🍻
Good idea mate. I cooked a pot of beans in mine but I noticed when I put too much wood and it gets too hot the metal warps, at least it did on mine. Cheers mate.
I do recommend you get a cheap pizza pan from the dollar store to put underneath the chimney so you don't catch the grass on fire. Especially in a dry season. Thanks for the tip. I've been looking at my fire starter thinking I wish I could use It to cook! Yup! Will try it soon. Also, going to try my gas top grate over it to hold the pan and then I could drop wood in from the top.
Thanks again my friend! Your still here!!! And not completely feed up with my channel yet !! 🤪🤯😄😄😎👍🏽👍🏽I appreciate your continuing support bro!! Don’t know why you do, but I honestly do appreciate it! Your a good en my brother 👍🏽👍🏽🍻😎🔥👍🏽
You are a good man my friend! I truly appreciate your kind words!! I hope that through all your support and watching my videos you have got at least one little tip that you can use!! That would mean the world to me!!!!! Honestly I love doing this rubbish! And I only do it because I enjoy the feedback! That’s the truth!! Mad Dog Survival I think that's the first time I've gotten a kissy face emoji from a special forces soldier that bites attack dogs! 😂🤣😂🤣 You're awesome Mad Dog!
Great idea! I've watched SO many videos about making one out of a soup can, coffee can, etc. 90% of the work is done for you with your idea, and just a few simple mods!
Thank you very much for your kind words! I appreciate it! Glad you liked it my friend and at 72 years young, i I wish you many more years to come! Best wishes 👍🏽👍🏽😎
@@MadDogSurvival it was not nice words , you earned dem, do you wish to tell d truth and nothing but d truth so helo me GOD, dats all to it, at 72 its never good to tell e lue GOD DOES NIT TELL A LIES NOR TEACH ,SUCH, JUST AMUSE TO TELL D TRUTH, A JOB WELL DONE.
Awesome! Another thing you can do is put a bain marie stainless steel pot inside the stove after drilling holes on the top and bottom of the bain marie pot. Then, it can mimic a wood gas stove. :)
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Yep that’s a great idea I’ll have to experiment with that! Thanks for your watching and taking the time to comment! Very best wishes friend 👍🏻👍🏻😎
Suggestion: If you do cut a window for adding wood, out a cheap old window steel hinge and make a door instead as a big hole would make the wood burn too fast. Thanks for this I am going to make one with a metal door to add wood too!
Thanks again brother ! Yep it’s definitely worth a fiver!!! Definitely get the equivalent if you can over there in the states! Honestly it’s a great little bit of kit! Thanks for watching again brother hope your well mate! Best wishes to you and your family my friend 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😎
Thanks mate! I appreciate your watching!!! Excellent! Hope your having a good weekend brother! Ladies and gentlemen the trap king is on my little channel..... please show respect!!! Excellent! Glad you found it useful my friend! And I’m honoured to have you watch again! Thanks again and best wishes brother 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😎🍻
haha cheers mad dog , by the way those noodles looked lovely mate , i really like stuff like that and the fork handle (not four candles lol ) was great
Thanks again brother! Yep Ronnie Barker would be proud! Lol.... glad you liked it mate and I hope you found it useful! I truly appreciate your support and watching my stuff mate! It means a lot to me! Best wishes my friend 👍🏽👍🏽😎🍻
You could load it with proper firewood, like four pieces , split of some splints from the middle of each, fill middle with fatwood, waxpaper, Birch bark, pine cones or the like and sticks. Light it from underneath, have something under. Burn from center of wood will last a while and the center will act as a chimney and flame in center. Obviously for duration burn, winter? Or fill with standing twigs & branches from start, light underneath or on top.
Jaha this is Genius Jaha just get one of these and make a metal Grill or Platform for the pots on top.dear Sir I'm definitely picking this up Automatic Hobo Stove definitely need it for My Carne Asadas too...
@@MadDogSurvival Might be a life saver for me.and my little ones in these troubling times New Sub. here looking forward to more of you're content Brotha...
Thanks my friend, I hope it doesn’t come to that mate but it’s worth knowing how to get by if we have to. Welcome aboard my brother great to have you along with us on my little channel. Best wishes to you and your family 👍🏻👍🏻😎
@@MadDogSurvival I have a video. The first one has lasted 4 years so far. Obviously the tube is stainless steel. It's a bit of off cut from wood burner chimney
Made one of those out of a large coffee can once. Not as fancy, and I never thought of using it as a stand alone stove. Now of course, large coffee cans are plastic. Yuchchh....
I made a charcoal grill out of 2 refrigerator shelves and 6 concrete blocks. I put 3 blocks in a square "U" shape on the ground, 1 fridge shelf on top, 3 blocks on top and 1 fridge shelf on top. That was my first time ever forging chicken. I poured charcoal on the first shelf and cooked the chicken on the top shelf. Even with an 8 inch gap between the charcoal and the food, It cooked the skin on the chicken so fast, it had burnt it to a char before the meat ever changed color and it destroyed the baked potatoes.
Lol… thanks for sharing your experience! Maybe could have been used to make horse shoes instead 😂….we have to try these things brother! Have a happy Christmas mate. Very best wishes 😎👍🏻
I'm a 55 Alabama born redneck and even I know oven racks are ok but not refrigerator racks, they're galvanized and poisonous fumes are released when heated over fire😷🤢🤮🙄. Just like idiots boiling peanuts in A galvanized wash tub and poisoning people. And yes in the south we eat boiled salty peanuts and Cajun flavor.
Great job,man after my own heart,so to speak. Perhaps cut a square out near the top to feed wood? I love Aldi stuff.Sick of their food though. Im also "oddball" haha, although it is we that are the clever ones. New subscriber.
@@MadDogSurvival sorry i didnt mention it before but weber makes their normal sized one and they also make a smaller one. Depending, i think the smaller one may work out better.
Yep ... have well understand my friend! I’ve served 12 years with the British MOD .. try your lighter in -0.25.c or wet.... ! I’ve used bic lighters in all conditions, and they are not always the best option! ! Ferro rods will always perform in all conditions! ... prove me wrong! Best wishes!
I know playing with the fire rods is the hot thing to do to look outdoorsy but every boyscout learns cottonball with a little vaseline will start with 1 match without all the flying sparks and burns for several mins to start fire easy even a little damp kindling.
@@MadDogSurvival im not throughing of on you or your " military training" but have you yourself not noticed that a lot of teaching on u tube i have a fire stick I'm all set. Hell not saying you cant start a fire with one with wet stuff i still like having the easiest way available. Im sure everyone with military training can use a bow drill to but a bic lighter sure is easier.
Agreed easy is best but not always the most long term sustainable! When your matches and cotton balls run out what then? I can light fire by bow/ hand drill as I’ve shown in my videos as well as several other methods, all I’m saying is easy is fine but don’t put all your eggs in one basket! Thanks again for your watching and commenting 👍🏽 Best wishes
P.s if you like easy fire starters check out my mad dog jewels! Really easy and burn up to an easy 7-8 minutes! And when wet ! 😉👍🏽 My eBay link is in the about section!
Thanks for responding i actually though you were talking about lighting a hobo stove didnt realize my commit about everyone using a fire stick would bother you as i just said my idea work well if your tinder was damp and is easier than the rod. Last time i checked those rods use up to so back atcha what do you do then. Geez
Thanks my friend! Well I guess I can’t please all the people all the time! lol..... I honestly don’t let the thumbs downers bother me one bit, I just think it’s great that we live in a place where we can have our different opinions and that’s what’s important to me. I appreciate your support and kind words my friend 👌🏽 Best wishes 👍🏽👍🏽😎
