I think Europeans came up with the idea of prison. The original concept was to have relatively short sentences and to focus on reeducating these troublemakers to become productive members of society. It evolved into a very profitable business and well-paying profession for punishing and warehousing overwhelmingly men who are mentally ill and/or dysfunctional. Black male criminals typically were raised by single mothers, read on a 2nd grade or lower level, and were passed through school without achieving grade requirements. So, they were set up to fail in life. We don't have an effective system in place to undo that damage. Rightists want everyone behind bars while leftists want to create increasingly more victims.

My dad turned me in when I was 15. Pissed at him at the time, but it might’ve been the best thing he ever did. I will always be grateful for his integrity for holding me accountable.
I stole a pack of bubble gum from the checkout lane at the grocery store when I was 2-3 years old after mom told me I couldn't have it. For some stupid reason, I showed it off proudly to my mom as she pushed our cart (with me in the little kiddie seat) out the automatic doors of the store. She slapped my butt and made me march back into the store, stolen item in hand, and admit what I had done. I'm closing in on 40 years old now and I still remember that. I never stole again.

Super proud of her. It’s so brave to do the right thing when it’s going to break your heart to do it. I was in her situation and even though it was a rough life lesson for my son I’m absolutely certain he would have lost his entire life instead of just a few years of it if I had tried to protect him or ignore his situation. He still hates me btw but his life is good his family is fantastic and he’s extremely successful so I’ll call it a win.

Stop blaming the parents for the actions of their child. Some children turn out evil no matter how much you show them, some turn out great despite they pure evil they were raised around. Children are still individuals who will make their own decisions.
If you attack an elderly person, the charges should be attempted murder. So many older people can't recover from a fall like that. There's also a greater risk of causing them to suffer a heart attack. The mother of the attacker is a strong woman. It must have been hard, but she did the right thing.
