A bank teller is driven to stealing bank funds by his mother-in-law who continually nags him about forcing her daughter Muriel to live in poverty. He is caught and sent to prison. Meanwhile, the mother forces Muriel to divorce him and marry a wealthy industrialist.

I like the way this movie seamlessly goes from seriousness to comedy - without overdoing the comedy aspects. The two cops on the boat were a comedic act without taking away from the mainly serious plot. It ended on a high note, again using a bit of comedy. Really enjoyed this one!

I remember a lot of 'unmarked intersections'. People seemed to navigate just fine without being told what to do at every corner.

Irene Hervey was married to Alan Jones and was the mother of Jack Jones, singer.

@@mgomez5606 Yes, that Jack Jones who had a number of hits in the 1960s. His father Alan was also a singer who sang in a number of 1930s and 1940s musical movies like Show Boat and Night at the Opera.

It's so annoying in movies and when it happens in real life. If your mother is living with you, as soon as she says anything negative to your husband or wife you need to tell her to check her mouth. Instantly.

Excellent movie for the time period. Irene Hervey was so beautiful. Vastly underrated. A few years later she could have been quite a beauty queen.

Opening chase... why were the police shooting at him? Was he considered armed and dangerous, or did they consider stealing money a good enough motive?

Whatever drugs were floating around Hollywood in the 30s, the writer of this screenplay must have been on all of them. This film can't decide whether it's a comedy or a thriller and it ends up being neither. But I love movies from this era regardless, though. Thanks so much for posting it!

A bank teller but look at the magnificent house! And maids! I love the car chase, reaching speeds of up to 60 miles an hour, hanging police out the door taking pot shots! Those were the days!

I think prison is better than his mother-in-law!! The mother-in-law seems like a blueprint for my marriage complete with a black hat cat and a broom.

The prison cobbler must have been kept busy repairing all those tackety boots crunch crunch crunch. The two dumb cops made a good double act. All in all enjoyable film'
