A Caterpillar 160M AWD Motor Grader working. Road work in Sandy Hill, Ottawa is looking good. This nice road grader is smoothing the dirt in the rain. Keeps the dust down for sure. Thanks for watching and check out my other videos.

For the people that don't know any better , to be a good operator is not just pulling levers . First he has a 160 when a 120 would have been much better .As a good operator you have to judge how much rock to put down and you you can see this guy put down way too much rock and had to work all that rock down stream . And as a good operator you try to make the guys job on the ground easy and as you see this guy piled the rock up on and next to the sidewalk...so now a guy with a shovel has to go behind him and clean that off so they can pave. I started working as a grade checker for a guy like this 35 years ago and taught me what not to do when I starting running blade. The best thing for this operator is get out of the machine and go back and do the shoveling....that's the only way this guy is going to get better . Machines are suppose to make the job easier...not harder !

Wow..... I find it impossible a smart feller like you is a operTor. I don't even know where to start with your post. Lever puller ... that's cute. M has two joysticks. How much rock to put down. Its processed sad and gravel, not rock. If you watched the video, and I recommend you go back and watch it a few times, he brings material to the sidewalk, and SLOWLY brings it back out as to not damage the sidewalk or end up piling a bunch ON the sidewalk for his laborer to clean off. I think you never progressed past a grade checker.

VIC CHIAPETTA. I work for this company my family owns it. This guy here has been on a grader for over 25 years. He is one of the best in this area. I’d like to see you even get close to touching him. Everyone can run equipment through a keyboard but when it comes down to it they shut up. Just like you would.
@bogingrich8708
@bogingrich8708 3 года назад
I agree with Vic. Although, the operator is at a disadvantage ( he’s using a Cat ). Throughout the video you can see the operator constantly making vertical adjustments ( chasing the road ) creating a wave affect on the surface. And holy smokes, that hump he left in the intersection, big no no. Run it out , never leave a hump like that. At the end of the video you can see where he burned through the fresh material down to the existing surface creating a low spot. At the very least he could have used the Cross Slope function and had the material perfectly layed out in 4 or 5 passes. Just my humble opinion.
@bogingrich8708

Was your operator new to that machine ? That would explain a lot. Those M series Cats are terrible. The only good thing about them is the visibility from the cab.

@@SavageX125 I am a Pro-Blade Operator with over 50 years of experience!! I didn’t mean to insult your operator, I just am curious about his method here?!! I have trained many operators, and one of the very first lessons is material management!! Understanding road profiles, is second, and proper gradation of material to achieve proper particle density, finally to get proper results!! Maybe us “Old Veterans”, know what we are talking about!!!

Hi Kevin, Great video. I never get tired of watching big equipment work. I am no expert but it seems as though moving that amount of material a dozer could have been a better choice?
@MrMACHINE
@MrMACHINE 3 года назад
I think they used the grader for more precise leveling. I don't think a bulldozer would get the dirt spread properly. I'm not an operator, so not 100% sure. Thanks for watching👍
@proper2753
@proper2753 2 года назад
Dozers are only good for moving ALOT of material. Running a grader is the hardest machine to run even more than excavators. Needs to be super accurate with road work or you'll end up with puddles, bad slope that would make a very unsafe road.
@peterschenck4067
@peterschenck4067 2 года назад
Absolutely agree. It is a grader, not a dozer. When there is so much material on the blade that it is spilling over the back side, the operator should adjust to take a lighter cut.
@loiclavoie3670
@loiclavoie3670 Год назад
In the best of both worlds, a dozer would've spread the material first and then the grader would've done the final touche because there is indeed a bit too much material for a grader at the begging.

Sorry dude for asking u,but why do u collect material on one place,first of all u need much more time and rounds to finish job,and second u have to think how much material u need,if u dont this is happening to you,u dont need so much time and rounds to make flat surface with this material,i think someone who brings u material dont care what you gonna do with him...

Built many roads, cul de sacs, parking lots, just about anything you could imagine with a 14m. They are tools. You use what you got. I don't have the luxury of custom ordering a particular sized machine for every job, big or small. Do you seriously know of any company that has extra graders just sitting around for a operator to pick and chose from.
