All tech can catch fire. The issue is that when it occurs, it can be controlled. Batteries in evs are very hard to put out.

I've seen a few EV battery fires and every time the emergency services have great difficulty trying to get the fire under control! As for putting it out that's not as simple as you think!

I like my EV but if you never want to buy one that’s fine. I really don’t see the issue. Also if people don’t want governments that are mandating EVs then vote in one that will keep petrol and diesel cars. So far I have had 21 cars of which 12 were petrol, 6 were Diesel, 2 were petrol plug in hybrids and one EV. In all of those the EV is the best by far. Some had too much vibration especially on idle, some were not smooth, some were noisy, some drank petrol. None were perfect. The EV is closest. I love the fact that if near empty I just head home and plug it in and it’s ready for another 230 miles the following day.

He's probably joining the mob of us, that just can't be bothered talking to people about it anymore. People are working it out at a manageable rate for manufacturers ATM. All EV buyers come back? Perhaps the manager should have given you the actual percentages for people that buy EVs and trade them in. Go ask him for an honest number, I bet it’s around the same number of customers that buy petrol or diesel and bring them back because they are unhappy, some people moan about everything they purchase.

The range is based on previous driving style, so if someone before @ the macmaster drove it like they stole it, the predicted range will increase with a more normal driving style. I have been driving EVs for 5 years, and it is how the GOM (guess ometer) works.

Do you honestly believe that? Why would any car manufacturer build a special car as a demonstration vehicle, everyone would be disappointed with the one they purchased and bring it back wouldn’t they? 🤷‍♂️

@@st200ol To take it back they would need to be able to prove that something was wrong with their car. They wouldn't be able to do that. Of course, it could also be that the computer of the demonstration vehicle hasn't had enough recharge cycles to properly work out the range - but that would be a stretch.

It shows that such disasters are very rare. People fly, cruise and drive EVs without worrying excessively.

Will it always be that way though? Unlikely. Sodium ion batteries are much less likely to catch fire and solid state batteries never catch fire. By 2030 its unlikely to be a concern.

When they compare fire risk between EVs and ICE cars the stats are per 100k so how many ate on the road is calculated into the figures.

how so? guess it depends what you mean by 'rich' - plenty of near-new EVs (3-4 years old) available for £10-15k which is well within the range of the average earner.

@@Dulc3B00kbyBrant0n had a Renault Zoe for the last 3 years. Not a single issue with it. Mechanically there is much less to go wrong in ev. Much cheaper to maintain.

@@carolkiteley9273 about 15 years (sometimes more, sometimes less, depends on the mielage). replacing battery is expensive, but then so is replacing the entire engine on a car. average ice car lasts about 15 years, so more or less a wash.

@@robertfreeman7906 Not with current battery tech they won't, even if everybody decides they're great and infrastructure miraculously appears. It's been shown there simply isn't enough of the necessary material on or in this planet to replace the current ICE fleet. It can't happen, so it won't.

Many EV platforms are designed for battery swapping. The MG4 for one. Some places even have robotic swap stations. You drive in and 2 minutes later drive off with a new fully charged battery. So.... sorry pal.

Child labour cobalt is in 1-2% of EVs. Buy an EV with an LFP battery, no cobalt!

because although they create more to get made, they produce vastly less over their lifetime whioch more than offsets the initial increase

Everytime you start your engine it reduces it's life.

Look it up about new generation batteries because they now thrive on being charged to 100% as that balances all the cells to the same voltage and actually makes them last longer. These new batteries will come with q 15 year warranty.

Lease it then, when colour TV's and VCR's first came out a lot of people rented them, because the tech was changing and we had different competing standards. Its the same currently with EVs each new generation of battery technology is 10-30% better than the previous generation. Either buy a cheap EV, yes cheap used EVs do exist BTW with good ranges, despite what your mate told you down the pub, that will meet your needs, or lease a fancy £100k+ one like the Taycan or the Audi e-tron. We all have the choice.

How is this any different to ICE vehicles? The VW Golf for example has had eight different versions, many of which are updated mid life cycle with different specs and features.

I am pointing the issues of depreciation and the encouragement of rampant consumerism, Why would leasing something I don't want be the answer to those specific points. Did you not watch the video? David who probably knows more about the motor industry than you or me said EVs are not the future they are the present. Literally in the video you are commenting on.

Being the present doesn't mean it will be the future. Equally true for ICE and EV. When Liquid Crystals were invented nobody knew what to do with the technology. There may be a solution to transportation developed next week that kills both in a decade. Who knows what is on the future.

Lee, mentions that fact in nearly all his videos, have you not watched them? I never use public charging so it doesn't bother me. As David said if you live in a place with no off-road parking or a block of flats, an EV isn't for you, I would imagine car ownership is quite low as a percentage for people living in tower blocks though. If you do have off-road parking then you owe it to yourself to at least investigate the option of going electric.

@@st200ol They never discussed it in this video. I have off road parking and I've already investigated. I probably know more about EVs than a lot of EV owners. I'm mulling it over but I'm not yet convinced or ready to commit..

No. It was previously driven hard - we saw that. So the prediction of future range would be based on the poor efficiency caused by that. Now that Mother Nun Lee is driving sedately the range will start to show much higher. The range computer is called the GOM ( Guess-o-Meter) because it changes depending on the present drive conditions from the previous ones. It can't predict that the car would be driven by Lee next day and just showed the driving style from yesterday at the start of the next day. Then adjusts as efficiency gets better due to slower driving.

Still not addressing the Elephant in the room though. Transport is the largest energy consuming sector and makes up just over 33% of the total, followed by the residential sector (32%). Industry just under 20%. So you can safely say FF is 70+% of energy consumption in the UK. To replace that with electricity means 3x the generation capacity plus extra for charging the dunkleflaute cover. Then you've got to get it from where it's produced to where it's needed and in the quantities needed. Charging 120kWh extra long range in 10 minutes takes six times the current as charging in an hour. Even a 10 hour full charge is adding 400% to domestic daily usage which is around 25kWh. That is only possible on a public charging station with a high capacity supply. Range anxiety is a temporary issue, recharging is a far more difficult and expensive problem to solve.

Good analogy- a plane crash is an extremely rare event. If you are driving an ICE it’s at least 20X more likely to burst into flames than an EV. Fact.

We have a '23 Corolla hybrid AWD sedan, and are awaiting delivery of a new Corolla Cross hybrid next month. My only complaint is that they don't come with a spare tire, and if you buy one you can't put it in the spare well because they stuck a small electrical component (presumably for the rear motor) right in the middle of it. Really dumb.

I ‘ve got a 2007 Toyota RAV4 XT4 2.2 D-4D and very happy. If I was given a free hybrid or EV, I would sell it immediately, too.

Ironically Pterol can be made from Wind Turbine Operation, Porsche and Siemens have done this - Syntehetic petrol made by Aspen in Sweden is available. It will take 400 years to replace ICE vehicles like for like. This won't happen by 2030 or whatever arbitrary figure politicians pluck from the sky!

ICE cars put out dangerous byproducts into the air for the whole of their life-cycle so there is that.

There are companies out there buying used batteries and they said they can’t get enough of them.. sorry can’t remember what they use them for but they are definitely repurposed.

@@barronsclose Thanks for that, I hope being repurposed means making new EV batteries and not something else, I'm concerned that they keep digging stuff out of the ground and I'm not sure they know exactly how much is in there, we do know about oil and how much there is, but the materials to make new batteries? I'm not so sure.
