For those especially that are new, and think using earplugs are just for when you have a crappy or loud helmet - take my advice, pressure levels are high no matter what helmet you wear! Link below to my vid on that. Now as far as earplugs - if you find yourself needing to clean your ears, here's a product that just simply works. Flawlessly. The Elephant Ear Washer! Yes it's overpriced for what it is but I don't mind paying for quality and convenience.

Protecting your hearing is very important. Besides, it's less fatigue at the end of a long day of riding when you use hearing protection. My local Harley dealer has a small display stuffed with packs of foam ear plugs. Individual tear open packs of 2 is only a buck. I buy fistfuls at a time. Easy to roll between your fingers, slide them into your ear canals (mine are small too) and wham! Instant protection. I can still hear every noise I normally could but nothing is harsh or drones in my ears. A must for me when I ride on the freeway and especially if I'm wearing a 1/4 helmet and on a bike with a louder exhaust or following a bike with loud exhaust. I prefer hearing protection. Thanks for sharing!!

Hydrogen peroxide about once a month for me. I just mix and pour into my head and let it sit for a few. Does wonders for wax buildup. Earplugs all the time. It's crazy how loud the freeway speeds are when I forget them. You get used to it fast and I can see why people don't think it's an issue. Wear earplugs for a week and if you still have hearing you will see the difference when you take them out.

I about crapped myself when he said he rode for 13 hours in a day. How!!! My body wouldn't let me do that. No stamina..lol. In total agreement about ear protection. I won't ride without them now. I can actually have a conversation after riding on the highway at 70 mph. I've used the same plugs for about 2 years and they're great

My ENT doctor uses a VERY INEXPENSIVE ear wax removal method. Vinegar. Yes, lowly vinegar. Vinegar melts ear wax. Followed by a drop of alcohol for drying out the canal and you're done.

Its cheaper than going and having your ears flushed at instacare. I get that issue bout every three years or so, and its because I have used ear plugs for most of my life at work. I also use good hygiene practices. But now and then I get issues. Thank you so very much for this tip. Its essentially the same thing the doctor uses. Again, thank you...

Great vid my man. Took me many years to figure out I shoulda been wearing ear plugs the whole time riding. Strangely on the GoldWing with a FullFace it seems like higher wind pressure as opposed to a 3/4 or even half helmet. The wind noise in my helmet on my CB1100 is loud but seems less pressure. Very strange. Thanks for the vid and hey it's ok...you can have a cigar if you like on these vids. We don't mind!! LoL

I was at a beach recently and my equilibrium was off. Went to urgent care and they did this. Nasty how much wax came out once they did the same thing you talked about. You don't realize how much wax accumulates. Night and day difference.

You want "ridiculously simple"? An "Infant Ear Syringe with Safety Guard" Less than $5 from Walmart - Talk about easy & effective... You don't use it as a suction device (Except when it inhales the HO2 solution), instead you gently burst out a stream of the solution into your ear canal...

D'oh! Amazon don't deliver to New Zealand. I have been riding for 35 years. Never used ear plugs... I should give it a try.

Good video, so many people aren't aware of the damage that can be done at freeway speeds. Takes 15 minutes of freeway riding to have the potential of hearing damage, even with the most quietest helmet on the market (83db is the quietest helmet). I personally just use the cheep'o plugs you can buy in bulk, they work well for me in most cases. Only time I have real issues with plugs is when I'm up in the mountains with my ears equalizing.

I used to use foams, at bike week last year I stopped by and had a guy make custom ear plugs for $40 bucks. They are great.

Feel compelled to ask... any issues with not being able to hear traffic approaching when wearing the earplugs? I assume the proper ones will still let in sound, but just dampen it for safety.

Thanks for posting this. It's something I've been pondering. I've been using the sealing earbuds with my iPod Shuffle on fairly low volume. That, itself, is noticeably better...but they work themselves out after a while.Looking for something that loops behind the ear better, and also doesn't stick out too far.

I use the No Noise ones, problem is when I sweat they start to slide out if I stop somewhere, take them out, and put them back in. Interestingly enough I hear the Sena better with them in. I think I have the ceramic no noise.

Due to your videos, I have grown to trust your how-to and learn-by-experience information you share. I bypassed the purchase-to-research method, which can take a very long time and waste a lot of money, and went directly to my local Walmart and purchased the last pair of Surefire EarPro plugs they had. Found them in the hunting gear section. Luckily, the medium size was perfect for me. I immediately put them on in the parking lot and road my 2016 Victory Vegas vigorously and aggressively, at 45 mph, 60 mph and 75mph. The plugs felt secure throughout, while wearing a half helmet. I had the stopper plugs out and found the wind noise was predominant, but subdued some. With the stoppers in, big difference. Much quieter, yet I could hear the wind some, but more importantly, I could hear the engine with it's stock exhaust. Tried them with my full face helmet and it was quieter still. I could still hear the engine, although quieter than the half helmet. I LIKE 'EM! Thank you, TWO!

I also have very small ear holes. The Apple earbuds are like 4XL compared to my ear canals. I too have experienced the muted hearing issues after long motorcycle rides. I will try your suggestions and feel that like you I will be successful. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Great video, Bryan! As an Audiologist, I can reassure the other commentors that your information was correct, including the part about getting dizzy. The most important part is the temperature of the water. Just 10-15 degrees above or below body temp for 15-20 seconds in one ear is enough to get the room to spin. Also, really glad to see you advocating use of hearing protection. Thumbs up!

You're looking good after your medical issues at the end of the year. I don't know if you have in helmet Bluetooth for phone calls or music, but if you do, how do these work with that?

Wind damage is no joke over time. You don't have to be worried about balance in the shower. The semicircular canals (responsible for balance) are contained within the inner ear. The middle and inner ear are completely closed off by the tympanic membrane (aka eardrum), so unless you blew your eardrum you can do both simultaneously. Literally the only entrance is the Eustachian tube, which runs from middle ear to the nasopharynx and serves to relieve pressure caused when the tympanic membrane moves (which increases pressure of the middle ear). When that gets blocked by mucous drainage from an infection, smoking, or whatever pressure can't be relieved, which is why your get ear aches, vertigo, etc when sick. Wearing even normal headphones doubles ear wax production for the duration they are worn, so you definitely want to get the stuff out. It's also critical that you decontaminate your ear plugs with EVERY use if you want to minimize the wax and prevent possible infections. Rubbing alcohol quiickly applied to them and allowed to evaporate is fine. It's what we use on stage for our in-ear monitors. If you don't want to spend $15 on the thing and want to be more thorough, hydrogen peroxide will dissolve any of the wax (use a few times each ear for a couple days - it's safe), then when done, use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol (you can dilute if you are sensitive) to dry the ear out. Rubbing alcohol is the same stuff in the drops ENT docs use to quickly dry your ears out for treatment of swimmer's ear. It is a 9.5% solution, so dilute accordingly, though more concentrated % won't hurt anything if you have no open wounds. I just pour a small amount in by hand, but if you have trouble a syringe is 99 cents anywhere.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 8 лет назад
They warn against it and I can tell you from actual use, that yes it effects your balance using it for a short time.
@alexm2623
@alexm2623 8 лет назад
Use of cold/hot water could do it, as temp extremes stimulate the inner ear. Water ~100 F shouldn't. If it does and assuming you aren't diabetic or taking medications for BP and blood sugar (or any other ototoxic medications like aspirin and antibiotics), or you stood up too quickly, there could be a hole in the tympanic membrane (doubt it - you'd be in pain), or you could have Ménière's disease. Is this the only time you've had the "fullness" symptoms? Fullness and small ear canals are commonly associated with it. I'd be curious to know which of those it is.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 8 лет назад
+Alex M dude you are waaay overthinking it. If you had ever used this you would already know what it's like. Simply put squirting water against your eardrum for a minute is a little disorienting. Simple as that.
@alexm2623
@alexm2623 8 лет назад
You know us folk in the science community love to solve puzzles and figure out "why" lol. I, and most people, don't get disoriented. I use a similar thing multiple time a week loaded with isopropyl alcohol to dry my ears out from swimming. Pure curiosity.
