@Bits & more by René Rebe Great giveaway! I will not participate because I prefer someone else with more interest in the platform win the competition. Thanks for continuing to provide new content for older hardware :).

Great cpu combo. I didn’t know that ever existed.

It would be cool to get Quake running on that board!

that is an interesting suggestions ;-) at least I recently have done Rendition Vertie vQuake on a similar "class" of machine (IDT WinChip) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i1ii0ZrPg2Q.html

Interesting board. Don't think I'd ever seen one before, especially powered up.

I wonder if there were ever any native applications ever compiled for windows NT on PPC? Or even more crazy if there was one compiled on this as well as the mips and x86 ports. That would make an interesting performance comparison. Otherwise the only windows NT software that would run is whatever can work within its simplistic emulation layer. And that would probably be as bad as the 68k emulation layer in early mac ppc os.

Windows NT had an emulation layer back in the day? I was actually thinking if I should try find a WinNT PPC and try booting on this board. However, on a search it sounded like it might require flashing another firmware on the board so I postponed that for when I ever have too much time for that ;-) One thing is for sure: there where not many Windows PPC apps ever ;-) omgwtfbbq.ca/2018/07/installing-windows-nt-4-0-on-a-powerpc/ PS: ok, interesting, sounds like non-x86 NT indeed had some "SoftPC" emulation: retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/8971/did-windows-nt-4-emulate-x86-on-non-intel-platforms

Indeed! From what I remember it was only promised to work with win 16/32 applications that were supposed to be written to conform to some win32 specification that MS had at the time. And this apparently allowed the applications to run quite seamlessly as though you had an x86 PC (just a lot slower). And anything that was more obscure or needed more direct hardware access was problematic and as a result would have various degrees of usability. There were many programs which did work quite well within this framework. In fact compatibility seemed fairly good overall. But it would be the performance of a decent 386 or so on a 100mhz Mips r3k for example. Similar to how my PPC Mac 7100/66 runs 68k software at about LCiii speed or less. On the alpha port, applications that were following guidelines to the strictest degree ran significantly faster as it probably had the best emulator. This is all from my old memory though. It has been some time since I was able to play with any of the odd windows NT ports.

I think that thing would beat a similarly clocked Pentium. Especially in the floating point compartment :)

Quake 1 benchmark comparison?
@Chriva
@Chriva 4 года назад
@@rugxulo That would be awesome but someone'd need to tweak some of the code. Mr Carmack pulled a few tricks in assembler on x86. Wouldn't be fair if the same is not done on both platforms :) I believe even the old beasts has fmadd for example? Hard to convince gcc to use that one instead of some convoluted mess. I think René has a lot more knowledge in that department than me.

PReP removed from the Linux kernel in 2013, w/ commit 933ee7119fb14156f46dc8bce8218f62db13c568 - PPC_PREP is marked as BROKEN since v2.6.15. Remove all PReP specific code now. patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/231652/

back in the day that hw was top comparing to 486 and pentium60 but it cant run win95 which was main platform for games/office/tech software. pity, but in case of pentium60 you have tons of good old software but not unix soft alone

Try using NetBSD on it, I have a similar machine and it can take advantage of the NetBSD machine independent drivers. With those drivers you can use things like USB2 PCI card in it as well as one for SATA drives. The NetBSD PReP port is what you'd want to use.
@renerebe
@renerebe 4 года назад
thanks, but Linux drivers are not machine independent?

currently this board are using the kernel 2.2.12, but what is the newest possible kernel that this can run? (assuming the PReP is not broken).
