I recommend anyone doing the repairs/disassembly to get a set of Torx screwdriver sizes. My phone did not have any T5 size, but instead a couple of T3 and T4/T2? Expect a work frame of 20-30 mins for new and cautious users like me! Overall, this video help me with my 1st generation moto x, as it gave me confidence in where to avoid the wiring and screws.Aside from three micro pieces that I found inside my phone, that weren't mentioned, the video is accurate (a rubber supporter, the SD support frame, and some sort of device next to the earpiece speaker or probably a different model).

As a professional tech, you left out some very important points: -The back cover is lightly though firmly adhered to the phone. -To remove the volume buttons, there is a little metal clip that must first be removed from between them. -The earpiece speaker is adhered to the housing. Otherwise, it is obvious that, for showmanship, that Moto X had already been disassembled. There is no way the original adhesives would have given way that easily.
@tbaier101
@tbaier101 8 лет назад
Agreed on all counts. Getting the back cover off was the most difficult part of it because of this. Wish I had known it was glued. Helped to insert small wedges (I used guitar picks) to keep the back from re-clipping itself back in as you work around and then sloooowly work the battery and ribbon cables away from the blue sticky stuff on the back cover. Patience and a delicate hand are required. My earpiece speaker was also different than shown. Also, my screws were T4, not T5. All in all, great video - very helpful.

If the internal sim reader is broken then is it necessary to change the entire motherboard
@MGOFor3ver

No if you have another dead board and a good heat gun.
@jeremybarr5415
@jeremybarr5415 8 лет назад
Just a helpful hint this phone is a little bit more complicated than some others there is adhesive that helps hold the back cover to the phone so apply a little heat and take your time. Also don't try to remove the ear speaker with out slightly heating it from the front side of the phone or you run the risk of separating the speaker itself since it is glued in place. The phone in the video above looks like it is an easy job because it has been taken apart before IE the speaker circuit isn't even attached to the phone when the back cover is removed, it should be one of the flex cables that need to be unplugged before removing the main board.

Thank you for the video. It helped a lot and I was able to replace my broken screen and get it working perfectly. You must have disassembled that phone before because nothing on my phone just fell off. The screws were all on with Locktight and the battery and mother board were glued down. They came off hard. There was another gizmo on my phone you didn't have right beside the camera that had to be unplugged. Anyway, thanks again your video taught me a lot.

Just replaced my broken screen, the guide was nearly perfect and the new screen looks great. My phone had a few very minor differences/parts but that's not surprising and they were easy to work around. I wish the walk through would have mentioned that the back cover is glued on, getting that off was the hardest part. Ended up using a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive, but it was still difficult. Another issue is that my volume button isn't fitting correctly (regardless of orientation), I thought it must be the frame so I swapped them with no luck. It doesn't rock back and forth in either frame that is attached to the new glass. I Fooled with it for a while but it was getting late and I lost interest. With the phone fully assembled it's easy to tell that somethings wrong with the buttons action but it works well enough to bring up the touchscreen volume and will get me to the end of my contract. Parts came really quickly and I loved the guide. Thanks.

Since replacing the glass/lcd I have one problem. When a call is started the screen goes into sleep and I can't get it back out unless I do a hard reset. The power/reset button works properly in every other application. Any ideas? Seen this before? Didn't do this before the replacement. would love your input Fixez!

A couple of tech tips for anyone deciding to tackle this, it was my first time breaking into a phone like this. Two things that I noticed: you don't necessarily have to remove the volume/power buttons and the power/volume ribbon cable may not want to snap back in. When I couldn't get the cable to snap back in I taped it down with electrical tape to ensure a good connection and added a couple of layers so that the rear skin would sandwich it in there and keep it from moving anymore. It was an adventure to say the least.

Note, it appears that motorola has used a variety of screw sizes. The video claims T5, some comments say T3, mine has *T4* screws. I suspect that many of the folks who complain about the poor quality of their T3 drivers may have been mislead by using them in a T4 screw (the driver fixs, but loosely so it will strip either the driver or the screw head) I eventually had to drill off the head one of the screws after it was stripped; If i can't find a replacement screw, i'll just super-glue that corner of the display.
@jeffpeck7007
@jeffpeck7007 9 лет назад
Jeff Peck Also, the video doesn't show it, but you need to be agressive with a heater/hair-dryer to get the back off; must soften all that glue that holds the back to the NFC antenna (I broke my NFC trying to pry off the back, but it's not that critical; and only $15 to replace) On the other hand, you really don't need to separate the battery from the mother board; just un-clip the button-cable, lift the motherboard and battery, and place on the new screen/framework. less to un-glue, less to reconnect.

Im not to sure I there really is a way to tell before hand if thats what you mean. I ended up buying a Screw driver kit online that came with t3, t4, and a t5. My moto x 2013 had t4 screws in it. good lcuk

jeremy stauffer where did you bought your kit? Just wondering. Any good ones from Amazon you recommend? I have two moto Xs and I think I stripped some screws and the torx screwdriver on that one so I'd like get higher quality ones.
@sethgeorgson7775
@sethgeorgson7775 9 лет назад
I thought this video was nice and the replacement screen was great. Here are a few notes on my experience: Mine had T4 screws. Make sure you use the right size or they will get stripped. I tried T3 and got most out but two ended up stripped. I used a small pointy dremel bit to grind a slot into the two stripped screws to get them out with a slotted screwdriver. It took way longer than necessary, if only I had used a T4. (This has been noted by a number of others) Be really careful with that small white ribbon connector on the battery (for power and volume buttons). It came apart for me, and if you look closely at about the 10:00 mark in the video you can see it came apart even for the demonstrator. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bR2k7kEZaj4.html. If it comes apart you can pop it back together, but it's a pain. If you get the whole screen with frame assembly, check for a small piece of protective tape over the microphone hole on the inside. I got the whole thing put back together and the mic wasn't working, so I had to do it all over just for a tiny bit of tape that I missed.

My Moto X recently dropped and hit the floor on it's bottom left corner (when viewed from the front). The brightness seems to be permanently set to less than 0. I can only see through the screen in pitch black darkness, and even then, barely. Could this be an issue of a loose part? I'm thinking of opening it up to try and fix it. I appreciate any help. Regardless, great video. I'd feel confident using this as a guide after watching it and seeing you respond to comments.

A few other folks have mentioned that, while the video specifically refers to a T5 Torx screwdriver, that size is definitely too big. I ordered a new screen, and it came with a pry tool, a spludger, and a T4 Torx. I was able to get two of the eleven screws out with it, but couldn't do a thing with the T5 I bought in a kit over at Lowe's. (It wasn't expensive, though, like seven bucks, and now I have a whole bunch of precision bits!) - but no T3. So, on to Amazon. My next kit with a T3 in it should be here by the end of the week... sigh...
